small rooms

OP posts:
Geppili · 15/01/2023 01:37

Huge high freezing cold stairwell.

Geppili · 15/01/2023 01:38

And no (F)utility room/space

melcalfe · 15/01/2023 02:14

It's my dream home but seems to have a '45 min rule' - 45 mins drive from everything. 45 mins from the closest shopping centre and it bugs me I can't just go there with a baby, it's a whole mission and dreading he'll cry the whole way.
45 mins from mum groups, from where my friends live. From the beach.
It makes me stay a home a lot.

Palmface · 15/01/2023 02:19

Love my house, but live at the top of a really steep hill. Makes walking anywhere a sweaty and knee-achy affair, particularly with a buggy

Clettercletterthatsbetter · 15/01/2023 09:31

The house has been extended over time but still has the original tiny entrance hall. It’s about 1.5m square and always looks a mess with 5 people’s coats and shoes!

Clettercletterthatsbetter · 15/01/2023 09:34

But mostly I hate that it always needs money spending on it. We just get to the point of thinking we might be able to spend money on aesthetic things like decorating, and then another roof leaks or we uncover another damp problem.

I still love it though - I just wish it didn’t cost so much to maintain!

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 15/01/2023 09:35

Small living room. Only one furniture layout is possible.

No proper entrance hall which makes it hard to get out in my wheelchair (didn't need one when we first moved in) and nowhere to put shoes properly, can't even fit a hanging shoe rack in.

BelenaConhamHarter · 15/01/2023 09:40

It's listed. ENTIRELY my own fault for buying it.
Learnt the hard way.

RiceOnABike · 15/01/2023 09:54

We are semi-detached and the driveway is directly next to the side wall. Some of our neighbours with the same design of house got a slightly wider garden, wrapping around the side of the house, then a narrower driveway. They gave us the wide front garden, then put a wall sticking out to the side of the house with more driveway space behind. I'd have much preferred a slightly bigger garden with side entrance! Gives me the rage every time I go for a walk and see the other houses.

NancyJoan · 15/01/2023 09:56

No way of adding a 2nd bathroom. I just want a bath in peace!

BamBamBilla · 15/01/2023 09:59

The garden is at the front of the house so there is no privacy from the neighbours and the back yard gets no sun.

Open staircase in the living room so all the heat just goes straight up and downstairs is too cold to relax. So we've been lounging upstairs most of the winter.

Fourfurryfeet · 15/01/2023 10:17

No hall - you walk straight into the kitchen so it's always full of shoes and coats.

Kitchen is north facing so we always sit in the darkest bit of the house, while the sunny spots are deserted.

MintJulia · 15/01/2023 10:20

The fact that my nasty arse of an ex reversed into my conservatory, cracked the roof and now water comes in. The utility room is damp as a result.

I'll have the conservatory removed as soon as I've saved up some money. It's not a big thing but it wrankles. 😠

larchforest · 15/01/2023 10:36

Only two plug sockets in our bedroom, and both of them are behind where you would normally put furniture.

The thermostat is on the warmest interior wall in the entire house.

Incredibly hard lintels above the windows so it is a total nightmare trying to put curtain rails up.

The kitchen is too small for either a dishwasher or a tumble drier, let alone both.

stopringingme · 15/01/2023 10:50

The kitchen cupboards on the wall you cannot put normal sized round dinner plates in - the door does not shut, had to buy square plates.

Will be changing the whole kitchen in the next 5 years.

Downstairs toilet straight in front as you come in the front door.

I would also swap the main bathroom and the third bedroom over so there was a bathroom next to the 2nd bedroom.

More plug sockets.

Aphrathestorm · 15/01/2023 10:54

No fitted wardrobes/ only one cupboard.

No shower on/above bath.

Trees obscure the light coming in.

No utility room.

Only one loo.

stopringingme · 15/01/2023 10:54

Lurleene · 14/01/2023 23:51

No cupboard for the hoover

This is also a bugbear, utility room not big enough for it without it being in the way.

Dillydollydingdong · 15/01/2023 11:01

We have a downstairs bathroom where the loo faced the front door. We moved the position of the toilet. It's now in a very tight space so anyone too fat to fit would have to use the one upstairs.

Gwenhwyfar · 15/01/2023 11:05

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 14/01/2023 23:45

That the downstairs loo directly faces the front door. If someone’s been in there and not shut the door when they’ve come out, you walk in the house to be confronted by a toilet. Well, after the dog.

Small rooms. It’s a four bedroomed house with cottage sized rooms.

Same for me and I realised I was silly in closing the door all the time because if I live it open some of the heat from the rest of the flat will go in. I agree it's not the best view and it's also bad feng shui.

mondaytosunday · 15/01/2023 00:19

My stairs are steep and narrow (tread). Would not meet code if built today (Victorian terrace).
Ugly uPVC windows which only open top half - and I can't lock mine so there's a draft. I want to replace them with composite double glazed sash, but it will cost £15k for the 7 windows.

I fell down my stairs a few days ago. Not serious thankfully.

larchforest · 15/01/2023 11:09

I long ago came to the conclusion that the architects who design these houses with nowhere to put ironing boards or vacuum cleaners, and sockets in inconvenient locations don't actually live in normal houses like we do.

Gwenhwyfar · 15/01/2023 11:10

Babooshka1990 · 15/01/2023 00:43

No shower!

So you have that thing over the taps then? The temporary ones? Or do you wash your hair in the sink/with a jug all the time?
I don't have a bath and that's fine with me, but couldn't live without a shower.

Cuppasoupmonster · 15/01/2023 11:12

Everything.
No driveway or garage (street parking only).
Tiny back yard.
the inside is a wreck - previous owners clearly thought they would ‘have a go’ at anything that needed doing so it’s all botched and taking so much time to undo
Hallway is tiny and full of muddy shoes

squashyhat · 15/01/2023 11:15

The wooden front door swells as soon as there's a hint of damp in the air. It's so bad at the moment I have to shoulder-charge it to get in. Replacing with pvc asap.

My Dad fitted an automatic door closer!
