Things you are really pedantic about, even if a dirty beggar the rest of the time?

I am not a particularly tidy person but there are a few things that I have to do

I always iron the DC clothes even if we are just staying in all day. I am not so fussy about my own. I don't iron bed linen either.

I polish glasses and cutlery before putting them away.

My underwear is always handwashed and stored in sets in gauze drawstring bags

I clean the oven every day.

I only clean the bathroom once a week.
I wipe up any 'man dribble' and replace the towels etc but other than that it doesn't get dirty enough to warrant doing any more often.

I'm also a real slattern with laundry. We don't have a garden or tumble drier to dry things so often I can't be bothered and we end up 'saving' it and taking a load or 9 to be service washed at the weekend.

Hatrick - I iron in the morning when dd1 at preschool and dd2 asleep or if dd2 doesnt sleep in the morning she'll have a lunchtime nap and dd1 knackered after preschool so she veggies on the sofa watching a dvd and I iron, occasionally I do it at night time if DH watching shite football on TV

My house is a mess and I only seem to clean when people are coming round (apart from the loo, I do like that to be clean).

But my washing is immaculate.

I also have rules about what goes in the bin and how it goes in the bin.

Also, without fail, every Saturday, I pour a kettle full of boiling water down the drain outside that my dishwasher empties into. A plumber once told me it was the only way to avoid blocked drains under a dishwasher and I believed him.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 31/01/2008 19:18

I never iron things before I put them away. Just iron the night before or on the morning.

I got too fed up of ironing things that then never got worn, or came out of the drawer/wardrobe needing ironing again.

i think some of you need a cleaner!
my cleaner does most of the stuff, including loos, yuk.
But I am anal about anyone sitting on beds in their normal clothes

Desiderata · 31/01/2008 19:32

You should keep your own bogs clean.

SugarSkyHigh · 31/01/2008 19:33

no thanks! i'm working.

Maidamess · 31/01/2008 19:34

I am anal about my family putting their school bags/rucksacks/briefcase on the dining room table.

They might as well put their shoes on there while they are at it!

Smamfa · 31/01/2008 19:38

I now have a thing about putting my handbag on the floor in a public toilet, thanks to an article in the paper.

Not one of these things bug me. I get vaguely irritated if dh leaves used tea bags by the sink, but nothing else. and i don't think I am that much of a slattern...

StripeyMamaSpanx · 31/01/2008 19:39

I don't need a cleaner!

My house is fine. It is not ridiculously anally clean, but it doesn't smell or look dirty (well, not on initial inspection - I daren't look under the fridge) and you won't get ill from eating off our plates.

Thats all I care about really. I do things like cleaning the loo when it looks/smells like it could do with it. Clothes are washed when visibly dirty or smelly. Ironing is just not something that matters IMO - you can't tell once its been on 10 minutes anyway - though I would make an exception for work/school shirts.

As far as I'm concerned, our house is for living in, not looking at. I'd feel uncomfortable living in a house where every fingermark and speck of dust showed.

georgedontdothat · 31/01/2008 19:39

Dishcloths I use a new one everytime

Have to iron clothes

Hoover twice a day

and rinse out bathroom everyday

Thats it really

SugarSkyHigh · 31/01/2008 19:40

Smamfa - yes I agree! imagine doing that, then coming home & placing your handbag on the worktop or kitchen table!!!

and while we're on that subject, i don't like to touch taps in public bogs - i try & turn em off with my elbow

oranges · 31/01/2008 19:41

ah - agree about not putting handbag on public loo floor. I must have read the same article and now either hang the bag up or prop it under my chin.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 31/01/2008 19:41

I refuse to have (or use any soap that has been in) a soap dish.

I have no idea why.

Same goes for toilet brushes and holders.

I am working as in I AM OUT OF THE HOUSE SO CANNOT CLEAN IT FROM 7 MILES AWAY

Desiderata · 31/01/2008 19:42

Yeah, I work too, sugar. What do you think your cleaner's doing, exactly?

SugarSkyHigh · 31/01/2008 19:43

BEFORE my children were old enough for me to go back to work i was at home and DID NOT have a cleaner and YES that sort of work was harder than what i am doing now but 'i am working' means i have a career outside the home now

oranges · 31/01/2008 19:44

oh you know full well what she means - she works outside the house, so pays someone to work inside it.

StripeyMamaSpanx · 31/01/2008 19:44

Well if you want a cleaner, have one.

But really, its far easier and cheaper to just let the standards slip.

SugarSkyHigh · 31/01/2008 19:44

umm..... my cleaner is cleaning.
and i am away from the home so i cannot clean.
quite straightforward really

Bimble · 31/01/2008 19:44

Ladies I'm loving this thread. Haven't posted for a while but I feel compelled to tell you that I never considered myself a 'dirty beggar' until I read this. I hoover and wash the floors about once a week. I clean the bathroom top to bottom about once a fortnight. The kitchen is the cleanest room in my house but it's not what you'd call pristine. There are cobwebs all over the place but I have a LOT of spiders. I don't mind about the flannels being used more than once as I'm the only one with a lady garden in my house!

StripeyMamaSpanx · 31/01/2008 19:45

I suspect Desi's point is that the cleaner works cleaning other people's houses and then goes home and cleans her own.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 31/01/2008 19:45

I work too, just part time (from home mainly)

I employ a nanny so can't afford to employ a cleaner too. plus I'm not sure I would if I could.
