Washing taking ages to dry outside

I am trying to dry my clothes outside as much as possible. Today was a lovely day in London so I hung it out outside. It was outside for about six hours and then I took it in when it got dark. But despite the lovely day it was still very damp. Maybe because there wasn’t much wind today. But very disappointing to have it back inside with the dehumidifier on!

@Fufumcgoo thanks for the tip, didn't realise it was better to bring it in so early, never really thought about it!

ellieboolou · 13/11/2022 20:11

My lines gone in for the winter now. Thursday I managed to fry a load of towels on the line, like you yesterday just resulted in me putting it all out then taking it all back off still very damp.

I'll use my dryer as little as possible but I have to accept my dryer is a lifesaver in our house.

SirChenjins · 13/11/2022 20:35

Ditto @ellieboolou I try not to use it too much and prefer to line dry my washing, but my tumble dryer helps so much at this time of year.

Rayn22 · 13/11/2022 21:41

Apparently if the ground is dry your washing will dry!
If the ground is wet your washing won't dry! Suppose it's obvious but I never thought about it logically before.

LoveAngelLove · 13/11/2022 21:59

Aswell as temperature I check windspeed forecast.

The 'if the ground is dry your washing will dry' is nonsense.

There was wind and the ground has been wet all day and my bedding has dried perfectly.

My paths dried beautifully today. Can't say the same about my washing. Complete waste of time hanging it out

lipstickwoman · 16/11/2022 12:18

I've dried a load of running and gym kit outside already today, whereas a load of normal clothes took 3 days indoors over the last few days.

Maybe this is the answer. Just wear gym clothes Grin

We’ve had heavy rain here (London) so no chance ! It’s cleared up now but it’s quite cold and damp outside…

I still put washing out (oop north) if the day is dry and fine. Waste of time if there is dampness in the air. And I try to bring it in before it starts to get dark as even on a fine dry day the air will become damper. I am finding that bedding and fleece throws dry pretty well and only need finishing off inside. Heavier things like towels, jeans etc need quite a stiff breeze to make much difference.

Nanalisa60 · 16/11/2022 23:35

unless it’s windy you need to get it before I gets darks as it’s get damp again. The rule of thumb is if the pavement is dry then your washing will dry. Don’t forget to double spin on the highest spin your washing machine will go that also really helps.

Nanalisa60 · 16/11/2022 23:36

The wind is you best friend in the winter for drying

LoveAngelLove · 17/11/2022 08:11

There's also an app that will work out whether to bother 'HangTheWashing?'

Can't see that one on Google play store?

SirChenjins · 18/11/2022 16:13

It’s on the App Store

messybynature · 18/11/2022 20:05

I can only get things (almost) dry this time of year when I space things out on the line and hang jeans upside down. Thinking now I might get another line like this one, so I can dry two loads at once and make the most of the fine days. I just can't use the dryer anymore now grrr

@messybynature that makes perfect sense! I've put some out this morning using your system.

LoveAngelLove · 19/11/2022 09:56

@mum2jakie

It's not on the Google play store.

BooseysMom · 19/11/2022 16:49

Today was most definitely not a good drying day. The whole load came back in as damp as it went out. No breeze. I did tell DH but he hung it all out anyway 😕

mum2jakie · 19/11/2022 18:39

Today was terrible for drying outside, I agree

soupmaker · 19/11/2022 18:44

There was light breeze here. School polos and shirts, sports wear and a towel got almost dry. 100% cotton bedding went out damp, came in damp! Sun was low by 3pm so had no chance really.

Fufumcgoo · 19/11/2022 19:00

It's mizzled here all day today 😟

mum2jakie · 20/11/2022 10:53

The sun is bright and there's a light breeze so I've tried again with another load of towels. Will see how it goes... just remembered that I forgot to do a second spin so not sure if that would make much of a difference in these conditions
