just that...if it was frozen maybe six months ago, should i throw it out?

Twiglett · 28/01/2008 17:12

I'd cook it and eat it

pankhurst · 28/01/2008 18:09

you would?

It DOES seem wrong to throw it...especially after the work MrsMiaou was doing with her budget...

Maybe cook one and see?

i would eat it

have defrosted and eaten fish that has been frozen a year before

it looked fine, smelt fine, tasted fine and i was fine!

I can't believe people still don't know I am the lady of all knowledge related to freezing foods.

What fish is it?

scatterbrain · 28/01/2008 20:39

I've got dd's deceased goldfish in my freezer ! We were waiting for it to stop raining before we buried it !!! Must have been there about 3 months - should I bury it now ?

nannyL · 28/01/2008 20:40

OMG scatterbrain

could u not just throw it in bin and forget about it

whomovedmychocolate · 28/01/2008 20:40

How long can fish stay in a freezer?

Depends on their visa and tenancy agreements with the landlord

Scatterbrain - you need breadcrumbs

scatterbrain · 28/01/2008 20:42

Oooh no - she has written a eulogy AND a poem !!

It's OK - it's in a bag !

nannyL · 28/01/2008 20:42

maybe you should get burying ASAP

pankhurst · 28/01/2008 20:43

errrm, white fish...

herring, mackerels?

things high in OILS that i thought i would buy when i was in one of those moods.

needless to say, i didn;t get as far as actually cooking them...

scatterbrain · 28/01/2008 20:44

Yes you're right - maybe this weekend ! I forgot this weekend and we had a lovely day yesterday - would have been a nice day for a fish funeral !!! LOL !!

pankhurst · 28/01/2008 20:45

am i under a thread hijack here.????

this is quite worrying,...

if anyone knows a pet cemetary, our cat didn't make it through the weekend either and we can;t bury it in the garden?

OP posts:
scatterbrain · 28/01/2008 20:46

Why can't you bury it in the garden - we would ! After a spell in the freezer clearly ! Come to think of it I might bury my blooming cats anyway - they are being a pain !

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 28/01/2008 20:46

Herring and mackerel aren't white fish.

I need to know the exact fish to tell you how long it is freezable for.

So sorry to hear you lost your cat.

scatterbrain · 28/01/2008 20:47

Oh and sorry for your loss !!!

whomovedmychocolate · 28/01/2008 20:48

Blimey, there are a lot of cats dying on MN at the moment Sorry for your loss pankhurst!

But in answer to your question, you can take them to the vet for cremation, or you could always plant him/her in a pot with a nice azalea on top.

nannyL · 28/01/2008 20:50

dont do what i did as a child

bury dead gold fish IN a jam jar full of water...

only to dig up jam jar full of mouldy dead fish water (that had been forgotten about) years later.

i really WAS gross

(at the time (i was about 8) i thought the water would help preserve the fish)

whomovedmychocolate · 28/01/2008 20:53

If you want to bury a fish btw, the easiest way is to get a biodegradable bag (many supermarkets sell them or go to the co-op and get a carrier bag), put lots of salt in it, then put the fish in.

The salt deters cats etc (as does the bag) and the fish dessicates so that in six weeks or so when the bag dissolves, the salt leaches away into the soil and there is nothing left but dust.

Doesn't work with humans though

scatterbrain · 28/01/2008 20:55

Hmmmm - interesting ! How long do you think he will take in a special coffin made from a Jo malone box, encrusted with sequins and stickers ?

whomovedmychocolate · 28/01/2008 20:57

Oh god, don't do it for goodness sake. In five years your kids will have forgotten and they will dig it up think it's treasure and ick!!!!!

Decamp the fish first, let them bury the box by all means but I do remember very clearly digging up the biscuit tin with the mummified cat in when I was fifteen [boak]. Wasn't even my cat!

scatterbrain · 28/01/2008 20:58

Oh God - really ??

Right will buy biodegradable coffin bag tomorrow !! Perhaps coffin could become jewellery box ?

whomovedmychocolate · 28/01/2008 21:01

Newspaper works just as well though - so long as you only use a few sheets. Don't buy something you are going to bury.

I'm chortling at the thought of your kids referring to the earrings in the 'dead fish box' though.

pankhurst · 28/01/2008 21:02

don't worry about the cat xxx scatterbrain - and thank you for condolences all.

(we were very sad, but he had a good innings and we are thinking buddhistically about it - he may reincarnate?

will look up to see if VET does it - that would be good idea. will not do the jar thing - that is a truly gross thought!)

HOWEVER, AHEM!

It's MACKEREL.

I've checked. It's MACKEREL.

(preps herself to run towards bin if news is bad on fish front)

scatterbrain · 28/01/2008 21:03

Excellent - newspaper it is then !!

pankhurst · 28/01/2008 21:04

LOL (amid my grief...) at jewelry box, though
