Do they still make house coats like the ones Mrs Hall in All Creatures wears?

I had a look on Etsy and EBay but their house coats are dressing gowns…I want a house coat that’s like an all over apron iykwim. What should I be looking for?

I Googled School dinner lady uniform and that Amazon link above showed.

SirChenjins · 18/10/2022 18:17

I’ve just ordered a pink gingham one - I’ll look exactly like Mrs Knott from down the road from us in the 70s. She had a perm and a pink gingham coat and I thought she was brilliant.

More excited than I should be.

Warning warning ….I have to wear a lab type coat at work sometimes to go in certain areas, it’s made of 100% polyester and it is like wearing a plastic bag ! So try and find one with a cotton blend 💧💧💧😭

My granny's friend in the 70s was a cleaner and she had the pink gingham version along with a lilac tinted perm.

I really feel the cold so the thought of being a bit hot and sweaty in my pink gingham house coat is actually quite thrilling 😀

I used to love wearing my granny's one of those but here's had elastic cuffs. And your sleeve didn't get wet.

sunshinesupermum · 18/10/2022 19:24

It's an overall! Doesn't look warm at all.

It’s the polyester that makes it warm - if I wear it over my two jumpers and thermal vest I’ll roast perfectly in my own juices and turn the same shade of pink as my house coat

Slightly off topic but I am eyeing up the beautiful fair isle type jumpers Helen wears - however they all seem to be about £80 to buy! Any good value ones anyone can recommend? Also struggling to find them on eBay..

TwoMonthsOff · 18/10/2022 19:43

@SirChenjins
fair enough ! 😭😭😭

YY to this! I’ve got a bit of a fair isle obsession going on at the moment - I found a gorgeous wool one in TK Maxx recently for £35 and DH bought me a gorgeous Eribe one for Christmas which I keep for good. I’ve also got a couple of others which are nice but make me look a bit like I’m heading out on the fishing boat to catch the cod - the yarn is a bit too chunky. I knitted myself a fair isle hat in alpaca wool last year which I’m pretty chuffed with but the jumper was way beyond me. If you find any good value ones please let me know 😊

I honestly can't believe it-I too have tried to find Mrs Hall's apron/housecoat.
Have been on etsy and random googling....

How brilliant to see this post and great minds....

GuyFawkesDay · 18/10/2022 20:10

Fair Aisle cardihere is nice and not mega expensive either.

A local gift shop near me sells the expensive ones and I love them but I shrink really wool every time!

SirChenjins · 18/10/2022 20:12

Welcome welcome!

I’d love to find one in a 1940s floral pattern like Mrs Hall wears but a 1970s style in pink gingham like Mrs Knott wore will do perfectly 😊

Whole shop dedicated to house coats in Stamford Hill, London (orthodox Jewish women wear them)

Elderflower2016 · 18/10/2022 20:37

Ooh yes guy Fawkes that is nice. I’ve concluded the wool needs to be thin ish to prevent the Michelin man effect…

GlomOfNit · 02/11/2022 10:42

OP, do a search on ebay 'vintage pinny', and fill your boots. Grin I love these - I got one from a junk shop once in beautiful 50s cotton fabric and wore it as a cooking apron until it tore to buggery. (Old fabric rots)

On ebay they also have 'noisy' nylon housecoats which I don't think Mrs Hall would have worn (nylon?) in very funky 70's prints. Those are the ones with sleeves.

here's another one

and a 'noisy nylon' one!

SirChenjins · 02/11/2022 13:09

The first two are lovely! The 3rd one is certainly...noisy!

I have now worn my polyester pink gingham 1970's school dinner lady house coat on several occasions to do the housework and I can report that it is fabulous! It's definitely not the Mrs Hall vibe I was looking for, but I love it - although my family hate it with a passion. I think my winter project will be making a Mrs H style one for when I want to jump eras and become a little less flammable.

It's called a tabard - we have a shop near here that sells loads of them! Your best bet would be to have a look at your local market. Not a farmer's market, a proper old-fashioned market!

MrsCarson · 06/11/2022 18:35

M&S have fair isle jumpers this year. Nice and soft too. Blue one is my favourite

stacyvaron · 07/11/2022 00:20

Didnt everyone's granny wear one? Perhaps I'm just old. I just adore them!!! They're so practical. I can see granny using hers as a basket to collect beans from the garden, wipe a face or two, etc. Beautiful memories there.
