Does everyone have summer and winter duvets?

I’ll preface this with - I don’t.

I have one duvet and I don’t know what tog it is. I’m in my 40s and I’ve only just heard of togs and the idea of having more than one duvet per bed, we had one each when I was a child and that was it. When I moved into my own place I got given one from a family member. Used that for a very long time, got a new one at some point and threw out the old one but I have no idea where we got it, what it is made from or what tog it is. Does anyone know how I can find out? I’ve spent large portions of my life with no heating in the house and have often struggled to be warm enough at night especially as a child.

The DCs got a cot duvet then just standard single duvets, one each. Now with all the talk of energy saving I’m seeing lots of chat about winter duvets, oodies, electric blankets and hot water bottles in place of heating. And I’m feeling very guilty that I’ve been freezing my DCs for years as I’ve never provided any of that even when we have had no heating at all. I have horrible memories of struggling to sleep as a kid due to being freezing, I used to get awful coughs every winter. They don’t seem to suffer with that but I’m still wondering if I missed a big and important life lesson about duvets and togs somewhere.

can someone give me the idiots guide? Do you have summer and winter duvets? Even if your house has heating? How does it all work?

We have a very lightweight summer one and a standard winter one. The winter one lets us turn the heating down a bit at night.

DreamingofItaly2023 · 20/09/2022 21:29

We just have the one and are never cold at night and only get too hot at night during heat waves.

Amarette · 20/09/2022 21:29

I do. I have 10.5 tog for winter and 4 tog for summer. But I'm actually still cold with 10.5 tog so am buying a bedspread to go over the top as well.

You can also get sets where you have two duvets with different tog ratings and you can clip them together to make them extra warm, or use just the higher tog one or the lower tog one.

DreamingofItaly2023 · 20/09/2022 21:29

And we don’t have heating on overnight.

Amarette · 20/09/2022 21:29

I don't have any heating on at night.

tsatr · 20/09/2022 21:30

No, we have one and throw blankets over the top if it’s really cold. No space to store a spare anyway!

Dannexe · 20/09/2022 21:30

I have an all seasons one which is two duvets with press studs to connect them together. In the summer we use the thin one. In winter we use both. I actually have them in separate duvet covers so that I can throw the top part off if I’m hot (I’m menopausal).

BlueBlueCowWondering · 20/09/2022 21:31

We have 'all-seasons'. Basically a thin and a medium that can snap together to make a winter weight

We've never snapped them together! Autumn/ spring weight is plenty- we live in the south in a well insulated house.

SBAM · 20/09/2022 21:31

There will probably be a label on the duvet that will say the tog. 4 is summer, 7 or 7.5 is medium, 12-13.5 is winter weight.
We always had 13.5 all year round when I lived with my parents, and they still do. As an adult I have a 4 tog one because my house tends to be quite warm and my husband hates being too hot (we have a winter one and it’s not left the cupboard in about 3 years). In the winter I have a fleece blanket and wear socks if I’m chilly.
My kids have 4tog ones as that’s the recommendation for small children, but they have blankets and wear socks to bed if it gets really cold.

ChilliBandit · 20/09/2022 21:31

I have just one duvet, a 13tog feather duvet. We only had one growing up as did DH who I’ve just asked. I use it all year round except during heatwaves when I have nothing or just a sheet (to ward off the monsters obviously!). During winter I have a heated blanket and a hot water bottle that I use to heat the bed, then I remove the blanket when I get in. Bed stays warm with my body heat. I wouldn’t have space to store seasonal duvets.

dementedpixie · 20/09/2022 21:34

4.5tog for summer and 10.5tog for winter
My teens tend to stick with the lower tog year round though even though we're in Scotland

Heating off overnight

greenacrylicpaint · 20/09/2022 21:34

we don't.
I have a 12 tog duvet that I use all year round. in winter I add a warm through (& hot water bottle) and in summer I sometimes sleep on the duvet instead of under it when it's too hot.
thermostat is on 15 degrees at night.

Ditto.

And my children have only one duvet each (both pretty old from mine and DH’s first houses, so back in the mists of time, no idea what tog).

Who wants an extra set of duvets hanging around?

BurscoughBooths · 20/09/2022 21:35

We only have one. If I get too hot, I just stick arms & legs out to cool down.
If it’s really hot, we just have an empty duvet cover, but that’s just a few nights a year.
We have no room to store spare duvets, and it’s not something I’d want to spend money on either.

Abraxan · 20/09/2022 21:36

We have a light one on our bed normally. On one of the spare beds we have a thicker one the right size. If it gets cold we switch them over so we can stay warmer. The spare bed has various blankets for the odd times we have guests.

HorribleHerstory · 20/09/2022 21:38

Thank you

i tried to read up on it but every place I read was giving suggestions for togs in a room that is 18-21 degrees overnight! I live in one of the coldest places in the UK and the lowest I’ve seen on my indoor thermostat was 3 degrees (albeit that was years ago when we DC1 was a baby and we didn’t have heating at home)

I never sleep without the duvet even on the 40 degree day this summer so I’m thinking it’s not a thick one.

One duvet here!

How cold it is depends close I sleep to DH that night Grin

DC only have one duvet too, but will wear different styles of PJs in summer/winter. No-ones ever complained of being cold or I'd have sorted it out.

Same, and no heating at night.

Once you’re under a duvet with a blanket it’s easy to get warm, and I’d rather not have to store a whole separate duvet, the extra layer of a blanket is plenty.

lannistunut · 20/09/2022 21:38

We never have heating on overnight.

In our house each of us has a thick and thin duvet set. We can use thick, thin or both together if really cold. We store the unused one in a cushion cover and just use it as a cushion.

These are the clip together ones from M&S: www.marksandspencer.com/supremely-washable-all-season-13-5-tog-duvet/p/hbp60113589

countingdowntoholiday · 20/09/2022 21:38

*depends how close

UserError012345 · 20/09/2022 21:40

I don't

trevthecat · 20/09/2022 21:40

Our winter one went on tonight! I couldn't resist any longer! We have a light 4tog for summer and then a thick high tog for winter. Don't have heating on at night here

StrikeandRobin · 20/09/2022 21:41

what tog it is. Does anyone know how I can find out?

Its on the label, check it when you next change the cover. We do have a winter & summer ones but, since moving to this house, ave kept the summer one on and just added a throw in winter. I think we will be digging the winter ones out this year!

Rocketpants50 · 20/09/2022 21:41

I do, though in reality this year we seem to have gone from sheet to winter duvet. We don't have heating on and do have windows open though, only get shut when really cold so really need our winter duvet its is so thick and warm. Children just have one duvet but we put extra blankets and sleeping bags on their beds when cold.

tigger1001 · 20/09/2022 21:42

We use a lightweight quilt in the summer and a duvet in the winter. I feel the heat easily so overheat in the summer and the duvet is just too warm.

We tend to have the window open most of the year as we hate a warm bedroom but like a cozy duvet in the winter
