Does everyone have summer and winter duvets?

I’ll preface this with - I don’t.

I have one duvet and I don’t know what tog it is. I’m in my 40s and I’ve only just heard of togs and the idea of having more than one duvet per bed, we had one each when I was a child and that was it. When I moved into my own place I got given one from a family member. Used that for a very long time, got a new one at some point and threw out the old one but I have no idea where we got it, what it is made from or what tog it is. Does anyone know how I can find out? I’ve spent large portions of my life with no heating in the house and have often struggled to be warm enough at night especially as a child.

The DCs got a cot duvet then just standard single duvets, one each. Now with all the talk of energy saving I’m seeing lots of chat about winter duvets, oodies, electric blankets and hot water bottles in place of heating. And I’m feeling very guilty that I’ve been freezing my DCs for years as I’ve never provided any of that even when we have had no heating at all. I have horrible memories of struggling to sleep as a kid due to being freezing, I used to get awful coughs every winter. They don’t seem to suffer with that but I’m still wondering if I missed a big and important life lesson about duvets and togs somewhere.

can someone give me the idiots guide? Do you have summer and winter duvets? Even if your house has heating? How does it all work?

Yes, and I've just swapped them today! Hoping it's not too early for it, we have a 9 tog so imagine we'll be toasty

bobblysock · 20/09/2022 21:46

We just have one but it's a wool duvet which is supposed to be temperature regulating. Heating is off at night but we put a quilt on top during winter.

Snozzlemaid · 20/09/2022 21:47

We all only have one here and no idea about the tog.
No idea where I would store all those extra duvets.

OldWivesTale · 20/09/2022 21:48

Yes, we have a 2 together for the summer and a 4.5 for winter - but that's because I'm menopausal and always boiling. If you're waking up cold at night, OP, then you need a warmer duvet. I'm gobsmacked that this didn't occur to you before now 😁

Most people have a 10 or 12 or even 15 tog for the winter and a 4.5 for summer. If your house is very cold then get a warm duvet. They were on offer in sainsburys this week. Not sure if they still are...

OldWivesTale · 20/09/2022 21:48

Sorry that should say 2 tog for summer

Germolenequeen · 20/09/2022 21:49

Yes

Thearex · 20/09/2022 21:49

We use an all-season duvet too.

Thin summer 4.5 tog, which press studs to the 9 tog spring/autumn thicker duvet. We had it from Marks and Spencer. It is machine washable and is like sleeping under a cloud.

We don't have the heating on at night in the winter.

We use a mattress topper too, which is insulating.

Cleothecat75 · 20/09/2022 21:53

We all have two duvets. Summer and winter. We are currently on the awkward in between point where we are cold with the summer one, but i know we will be too hot with the winter one. I’m wearing my dressing gown to bed and have instructed the dc to do similar if they are cold. I think of it in stages, pjs/summer duvet, adding dressing gown and blanket, then move to winter duvet and loose the dressing gown and blanket, then as it gets really cold in December/January add the dressing gown and then blanket again. Then do it all in reverse as we get to spring. I do get cold at night so have put a lot of thought in to this over the years!

GuyFawkesDay · 20/09/2022 21:57

4.5 tog in summer and 10.5 tog in winter. At the "cold in the 4.5 tog" stage for me so I am getting out warmer PJs and socks for bed tonight and then we will wash and swap them soon. Though the kids seem happy enough in 4.5 tog most of the year!

We vac pac them into the loft out of season.

gretr · 20/09/2022 21:57

We don’t use the duvet in the summer, just a sheet and a throw if it’s cooler. Wool duvet for the winter.

Yarnosaur · 20/09/2022 21:57

Mid-weight wool duvet year round, and add blankets when it's colder.

ladygindiva · 20/09/2022 22:03

No, I have a thin duvet all year round as it's a warm house. Odd cold nights we have a large furry throw on top, but that's rare.

Idontdoyoga · 20/09/2022 22:09

Feather & down all seasons here.

4.5 tog for summer
10.5 tog for Autumn
Clip together for 15 tog if hard winter.
I get them laundered annually.
(Think sweat, dribble, wind, body fluids , yuk)
I air them on my washing line before use or before packing away.
I store them in breathable bags in my lovely dry airy loft when not in use.
I buy Fogarty, M&S or IKEA. I dispose of & buy new every 3 of 5 years. They’re not expensive in terms of use and quality.
I also wear bed sox as necessary. Cold feet can subliminally wake you up!

Craftybodger · 20/09/2022 22:11

We have a 2 parter, 1 part is 4.5 tog and for warm nights, the other 9 tog for spring and autumn. They clip together to make a 13.5 duvet which we use in the winter.

Couldn’t live with just one weight, even with 3 I still need to adjust the weights with blankets too!

Crocky · 20/09/2022 22:13

One duvet 4.5 tog. No heating at night and windows always open.

Fairislefandango · 20/09/2022 22:17

Yes a winter and a summer one for us. Can't remember what tog they are. We've just switched to the winter one yesterda, having been a bit chilly at night, but found it a bit too warm! We never have the heating on at night and always have the bedroom window a bit open.

Cynderella · 20/09/2022 22:17

Dannexe · 20/09/2022 21:30

I have an all seasons one which is two duvets with press studs to connect them together. In the summer we use the thin one. In winter we use both. I actually have them in separate duvet covers so that I can throw the top part off if I’m hot (I’m menopausal).

Same - although we have them in one cover when together.

We replaced our duvet a few years ago and got the pair. Before that we only ever had one.

Ladyofthepeonies · 20/09/2022 22:19

we have 15 tog for winter, but always sleep
with heating off and window open. 4.5 tog in the summer with a sheet (monster protection) to use if it’s too warm. I also have a weighted blanket that I use when I need to and a cooling blanket for other nights. I feel I have a library of bedding, but after struggling with insomnia I will try anything to ensure a good night sleep. They are all vac packed and stored in the big drawers under the bed.

OhIKnow · 20/09/2022 22:22

Ours is 13 tog super king size although the bed is just king size. Makes a big difference to warmth having a duvet that's big and overhangs the sides... no draughts! Use this all year and just kicked it off in heatwave (although it still has to cover my ears and feet because of monsters 😅)

The kids have a 10 tog each. I would add blankets in very cold weather. Nightwear changes from nighties or just underwear in high summer to long sleeve long leg Pj's in winter with bed socks. Sometimes a hot water bottle. Although teen DS never cold and wears boxers for bed all year round. Never had the heating on overnight. I remember as a child sometimes wearing a dressing gown in bed too if it was very cold.

oviraptor21 · 20/09/2022 22:24

10.5 tog all year round (why are the togs never round numbers?!).
Just stick a leg or two out in the summer and put on warmer nightwear in winter.
No heating overnight.

eurochick · 20/09/2022 22:24

We have an all season clip together type like others have mentioned.

bridgetjonesmassivepants · 20/09/2022 22:25

No heating on at night so two 10 or 15 tog duvets on each bed. Also cozee home fleecy sheets and duvet covers. Beds also have a bedspread or fleecy blanket each. No need for an electric blanket due to the fleecy sheets but kids get a hot water bottle in the Winter. Also have sherpa undersheets to use if necessary.

Fleecy pyjamas/onesie too.

If you have been cold in bed didn't you just add another duvet or blanket??!

bluesky45 · 20/09/2022 22:26

We have 1. Not sure on the tog but maybe 13 rings a bell? We use a quilt/bedspread on top when it's very cold and just use the quilt when it's very hot. DC only have one too. They have blankets to go on top when it's very cold and just use blankets if it's hot.

FountainAbbie · 20/09/2022 22:27

Don't have two here. Just the one, I think it's probably a 13.5 tog. If it's hot DH and I just use a duvet cover each instead. If it's too cold we put a blanket on top and maybe wear more clothes. I may buy a new one for this winter and get one of those clip together jobs. But generally I find if I'm cold at night I feel warmer if I put more layers on me rather than a thicker layer on the bed.

The kids just have one too but neither of them are duvet fans. One sleeps in a sleeping bag (cotton covered one, not the shiny synthetic material). One just has blankets but will add a duvet if it's very cold.

Bestcatmum · 20/09/2022 22:28

No. I have a coverless duvet and add blankets if it gets very cold. I find multiple layers much more comfortable. Coverless duvets are a wonderful invention.
