Does everyone have summer and winter duvets?

I’ll preface this with - I don’t.

I have one duvet and I don’t know what tog it is. I’m in my 40s and I’ve only just heard of togs and the idea of having more than one duvet per bed, we had one each when I was a child and that was it. When I moved into my own place I got given one from a family member. Used that for a very long time, got a new one at some point and threw out the old one but I have no idea where we got it, what it is made from or what tog it is. Does anyone know how I can find out? I’ve spent large portions of my life with no heating in the house and have often struggled to be warm enough at night especially as a child.

The DCs got a cot duvet then just standard single duvets, one each. Now with all the talk of energy saving I’m seeing lots of chat about winter duvets, oodies, electric blankets and hot water bottles in place of heating. And I’m feeling very guilty that I’ve been freezing my DCs for years as I’ve never provided any of that even when we have had no heating at all. I have horrible memories of struggling to sleep as a kid due to being freezing, I used to get awful coughs every winter. They don’t seem to suffer with that but I’m still wondering if I missed a big and important life lesson about duvets and togs somewhere.

can someone give me the idiots guide? Do you have summer and winter duvets? Even if your house has heating? How does it all work?

I really suffer from the cold and live in cold house. I prefer wool ( natural fibre no clumping) have all seasons duvet - equivalent of 13.5 tog in winter with at least 1 merino wool blanket, autumn and spring use the 9tig equivalent ( that went on at the weekend) and in summer use the 4.5tog.
I have previously used acrylic blankets, but realised merino wool is much warmer for them too.
Plus I have an electric blanket to take the chill of the bed in the winter.
No heating on from 10.30pm to 5.30am, though in truth the wood burner trips off the thermostat about 8pm so upstairs is cool in the winter.

We also don't have the heating on at night. I can't bear sleeping with the heating on all night, I wake up feeling all thick headed.

spiderlight · 20/09/2022 22:29

We have three 😳 Summer, winter, and spring/autumn. I am very particular about sleeping temperatures!

ODFOx · 20/09/2022 22:31

No heating at night and we sleep with the window open all year round. DH is a human radiator so we have a thin 4 tog wool duvet in winter and just the cover in winter.
I do wear socks in the winter though as m feet get cold.

BlindGirlMcSqueaky · 20/09/2022 22:33

I don't have two duvets. I have one thin one that's silk with duck down. I add blankets/electric blankets/hot water bottles/silk sleeping bag as required.

Silk sleeping bag I use year round. It's perfect for sleeping in the heat and it keeps me warm in the winter.

Electric blanket is a throw I can take anywhere in the house. I sit under it and watch TV.

I am not intending on having the heating on much this winter, but my house is insulated up the wazoo.

Yeahrepublic · 20/09/2022 22:34

We have winter, summer and then just duvet cover when it's really warm.
We put the summer one back on a couple of weeks ago.

I reckon the winter won't be used until late October.

No heating on at night either but the house is fairly warm and we like a cool bed.

ODFOx · 20/09/2022 22:34

Correction: Just the cover in summer.

SquigglePigs · 20/09/2022 22:35

We have a 4.5 and a 10 or there abouts. Generally just sleep with a sheet in the summer though. Light duvet went on a week or so back. Will switch to the warmer one when it gets colder. DD just has one but again just slept with a sheet in summer and then there're extra blankets for winter if she needs them.

lannistunut · 20/09/2022 22:36

I'm feeling upset at the people sleeping under just sheets Shock

stayathomer · 20/09/2022 22:38

Got two summer ones for the first time ever this year because two of the kids were waking up in a pool of sweat but couldn’t get to sleep when they tried sheets/blankets or nothing. Got them 4.5tog duvets and they were perfect!!

gogohmm · 20/09/2022 22:39

I used to at my old house, and they fixed together to make a very thick duvet in midwinter but now we just have a lighter duvet all year as the house is far warmer

neverwakeasleepingbaby · 20/09/2022 22:41

We have three - a thin one for summer, 7.5 tog for autumn and 13 tog for winter when the heating isn't on at night and it's cold. I love feather duvets. It's their heaviness and how they smell. I know some people might not have the spare cash, but I do prioritise having nice bedding since you spend about half your life in bed and it can really make the difference between a good and bad nights sleep!

Crocky · 20/09/2022 22:13

One duvet 4.5 tog. No heating at night and windows always open.

Snap!

scrufffy · 20/09/2022 22:43

I have a 13.5 down and feather duvet all year. And blankets in the winter

DP has a 4 tog on his side. All year. 😂😂😂

soundsystem · 20/09/2022 22:44

BlueBlueCowWondering · 20/09/2022 21:31

We have 'all-seasons'. Basically a thin and a medium that can snap together to make a winter weight

We've never snapped them together! Autumn/ spring weight is plenty- we live in the south in a well insulated house.

Yep we have one of these too!

Although for most of the summer when it was roasting we just had a sheet. Just this weekend put the heavier of the two on, and then when it gets properly cold in winter will double them up (we live in an old draughty house!)

Kids just have the same one all year round though, as they're young and more at risk of overheating... they just layer up with fleecy PJs. I'm not sure at what age they get a separate winter duvet!

PurplePositivity · 20/09/2022 22:44

We have summer and winter duvets, when not in use they live under the bed. The summer one is obviously less bulky and so creates the perfect space to hide Christmas presents Wink

We usually change over end of October and the winter one is like being in a marshmallow!

Hugasauras · 20/09/2022 22:45

I use 4.5 all year round. I don't like heavy duvets, they make me feel trapped! Our house is a warm one anyway, our bedroom is never below 17.5 usually so it's fine.

bravelittletiger · 20/09/2022 22:45

No

Always4Brenner · 20/09/2022 22:46

Just brought 16 tog and loving it if get too warm it gets thrown off then put back when needed.

MenopauseSucks · 20/09/2022 22:47

I have a summer 4.5 tog duvet & an autumn/spring 10.5 tog duvet.
You can them together to make a 15 tog duvet but I've never needed a duvet that heavy as I live in the South East so not exactly known for bitter winters (famous last words...).

Oh but it's lovely sleeping under a cotton sheet in hot weather. So cool and feels great on skin. I absolutely can't sleep with nothing over me but a nice cotton sheet is perfect.

PeloFondo · 20/09/2022 22:50

No just one - it's a wool one and I couldn't afford 2!
In summer I have just the empty duvet cover, spring/autumn the duvet and in winter I just add blankets which are usually folded at the bottom of the bed so I can grab them. Have a patchwork one and a wool one

mrsfollowill · 20/09/2022 22:50

No heating at night - unless it drops below 10C indoors (which it has never done in at least 10 years) Hate it - makes me have nightmares! We have a 7.5 feather duvet on year-round- I'm menopausal and DH is a furnace anyway- if either of us feels chilly we snuggle up a bit but it's rare!
During the heatwave this summer we 'peaked' at 41C here - I am so happy with the cooler weather and not having to sleep in a wet t shirt with fans blasting away all night and tossing and turning all night. We just laid on top of the bed for months with no covers- have a few throws and blankets lying around and will chuck one on if needed.

junipermerry · 20/09/2022 22:52

Wow, so many togs people! High summer, just a sheet. Then a 1 tog (a marvellous thing) and a wool 3 tog for winter. Anything more and I boil! No heating on at night, window open. We were given a very expensive 13 tog feather duvet as a wedding present - I have no idea how people do not cook under them.

stayathomer · 20/09/2022 22:54

junipermerry We got one for a wedding present too- cooked under it, dh adored it, I hated it- the smell every morning!!!
