Dishwasher with a cutlery drawer

sidsgranny · 20/07/2022 17:31

Our dishwasher has finally given up the ghost.

I've been looking at ones with a cutlery drawer but am concerned it might mean I can't get taller glasses etc in the top rack. Does anyone have one?

Thanks!

My Bosch has a cutlery tray. You can get taller glasses in at an angle but I also bought shorter wine glasses so they'd fit easier. It frees up space in the bottom rack too

cloudjumper · 20/07/2022 17:36

We have a cutlery tray, would never want to be without it! We have a glass rack in the bottom drawer.

NancyJoan · 20/07/2022 17:36

We have one like that in work. Our taller chunky water glasses only fit in certain places, which would really annoy me at home.

Goldpaw · 20/07/2022 17:37

Youre right, tall glasses won't fit, but the cutlery drawer is a game changer and tall glasses fit easily in the bottom rack quite successfully if you're careful what goes around them.

Yes it's a pain, and if you lower the cup rack you can't get bigger plates or pans in the bottom one. Baskets are much better and hardly take up any space.

I love my cutlery tray, but find that despite the upper rack having 3 levels I often need to choose between tall glasses or large plates.

Also, as the cutlery tray doesn't have a direct spray, items don't always wash as well if heavily soiled. As I don't pre-rinse my dishes, I tend to simply soak cutlery in a jug if not going straight in dishwasher, which works pretty well.

It all sounds a faff, but as a large family these adjustments are worthwhile to allow me to fill all of the dishwasher without a cutlery basket taking up almost a quarter of the bottom rack.

I have a Miele and I don't have any issues loading it.

Same here. I do fine the drawer though some what fiddly, each individual item goes into an individual slot, but it's a minor point. Of the two big drawers, the height of the top one is adjustable, so our tallest glasses fit fine.

Floralnomad · 20/07/2022 20:45

I have a Bosch and can fit pint glasses in the top rack with the cutlery tray , I used to have a dishwasher with a basket but much prefer the tray .

Rebelmcstreettuff · 20/07/2022 20:48

Honestly it's the best.
Realised after having one with a basket that the knives always got stuck in, lifting the basket out every bloody time!
Yes you can only put short glasses in the top rack but as other posters have said you just put these in the bottom.

greenacrylicpaint · 20/07/2022 20:49

our bosch had a cuttlery drawer.
our 'fine' tall glasses get handwashed anyway. for every day we have shorter stemmed ones.

Caterina99 · 20/07/2022 20:56

Ours is Neff and has a cutlery tray and I love it.

The middle shelf adjusts, but maybe I don’t have very tall stuff because I have no issues with getting everything in. Pint glasses fit on the top shelf and my dinner plates fit fine on the bottom.

Rowen32 · 20/07/2022 20:59

Definitely prefer the basket - easier to load and unload I think

tobee · 20/07/2022 21:00

My Siemens has a cutlery drawer. It is not possible to have tall mugs on the top level and dinner plates on the bottom rack. However, the top shelf can be adjusted, there are 3 different levels. And you can pull out any of the shelves and the cutlery drawer if you need.

I was wary about getting a cutlery drawer and kept the old dishwasher's cutlery basket in case i couldn't stand it but I've not used it yet. I do find that the cutlery drawer doesn't have a massive capacity which surprised me. And the way it's laid out there are quite large areas of each item which are covered by the plastic place ridges iyswim. But I'm getting used to it and it's fine.

We have a cutlery tray in our dishwasher and I’m not a fan. I find it annoying to have to place each piece of cutlery in the tray, I’d rather have a basket.

This
mum recently replaced hers via an insurance scheme, so only one option was offered.

we didn't realise what a pain it would be for tall glasses. Wish we'd kept the basket from the broken one. Will likely buy a basket.

woodhill · 20/07/2022 21:05

Siemens one

I like the separate cutlery tray

I tend to had wash tall glasses anyway

Caspianberg · 20/07/2022 21:06

We have Bosch with a drawer. Pint glasses easily fit on the top, but you can opt to lower it again for higher ones

would never have a basket again. Every time we stay somewhere with one things never seem to wash properly. I also love that the whole bottom is empty so can load mixing bowls and large baking dishes in alongside all plates etc as plenty of space

BeckyWithTheGoodHair010101 · 20/07/2022 21:09

Mine fit. We have a neff with a cutlery drawer. You can drop the top rack for taller items.

Enko · 20/07/2022 21:16

Got a miele comes with both a tray and a basket. I LOVE the tray and like other poster. No issue with glasses or plates.

GuyFawkesDay · 20/07/2022 21:19

Mine has tray and top basket. Tray I reserve for sharp knives and awkward/long cooking things like wooden spoons.

Glasses fit fine because I can raise/lower the top rack tier where they go. Pint glasses don't fit unless it's lower but we don't use them. Tall wine glasses, I just lower the rack.

sellthesizzle · 20/07/2022 21:23

My Miele has a tray and I love it. No issue stacking the rest of the machine.

pinkpirlie · 20/07/2022 21:45

I wanted a tray after having both trays and baskets previously as much prefer the tray.

We have no issues fitting all our necessary plates and glasses in. Perhaps we don't have tall ones? I don't drink wine and wash cocktail glasses by hand as they are delicate.

No issues with anything not cleaning properly either.

Not even a branded dishwasher, just a cheapo one via the kitchen company.

dementedpixie · 20/07/2022 21:50

I did have to watch the size of my new dinner plates so that they fitted in at the level I have the upper basket

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 20/07/2022 21:57

I have a Miele with a tray and the top stacking basket can be moved up and down to make more room to accommodate taller items. Love it.
