Mopping floors - least hassle

Jackieweaverishere · 20/03/2022 21:02

What is the easiest, hassle free way to mop the floors, I've got laminate and tiles. At the moment I've got an old fashioned bucket and mop but I find it a faff filling it up, then I just seem to be swishing dirty water around. Can anyone recommend a good mop or a really easy way of cleaning floors?

This thread is a little old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for mop recommendations, we’ve recently updated our best floor mops page with lots of great options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users. We hope you find it useful. Flowers

Shark steam mop! Easy as anything, and so clean, I love mine

Gazelda · 20/03/2022 21:12

Steam mop. Or a robot mop, although I've never tried one.

PrincessSpanky · 20/03/2022 21:13

Def a steam mop.

Etinoxaurus · 20/03/2022 21:15

How dirty are your floors?
I spot clean dropped stuff, have mats in all doorways and old fashioned mop once a week, either with a bucket or sink of detergent as it’s easy to soak mop head tend squeeze it out in the middle but. I use hot water and a generous splash of detergent, sometimes a squeeze of bleach.
I did use a steam mop when there were toddlers crawling around this way is quick

The Powerglide cordless mop - I've been amazed how easy this is to use; battery powered, rotating pads on the bottom, all kinds of floors. You squirt water or floor cleaner with one button and then glide the machine over it. Slightly smaller one called Powerglide City. Pads are washable, and also replaceable when needed.

Not sure you’re meant to steam-mop laminate

I have one of those Vileda ones with the spray built in. Easy and cheap

Watching with interest ;)

2 separate methods, both using a microfiber cloth and a long-handled scrubbing brush.
Tile gets washed and scrubbed where necessary with soapy detergent, going forwards wet cloth and backwards drier cloth. Then hot water and ammonia (well wrung out) for a shine.
Laminate or parquet gets vacuumed or swept (no shoes in the house) but only occasionally washed with almost neat wax detergent. Nuncas is a good brand. Your cloth needs to be very well wrung out because water can warp or damage the flooring.
Stardrops is fine for spot cleaning, either spray or on a cloth. It’s petrol based.

Flash speed mop. I just bought the box of wipes as had a swiffer already. I just vac first, then mop. Easy peasy and smell fresh too.

ParadiseLaundry · 21/03/2022 15:53

A spray mop. I haven't used my steam mop since I got one, it just seems like too much hassle now!

BasiliskStare · 21/03/2022 16:07

@ParadiseLaundry what is the spray mop - can you link to one - is that the same as the vileda one @NightmareSlashDelightful or indeed others

I had a steam mop and it just spread dirty hot water about the place & then floored need to be dry mopped afterwards ) Not all steam mops may be the same ) - binned it.

I use an Aircraft Powerglide, brilliant, so quick and easy, put water and Zoflora in the water tank and off you go, spray as needed.

A spray mop and a good scrub with microfibre cloths when it looks like it is needed (basically when somebody announces they are coming around Grin)

With a dog and a 13 month old, our house isn't the cleanest. We just say it looks 'lived in' Wink

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 21/03/2022 16:11

I use an E mop

ParadiseLaundry · 21/03/2022 17:16

This is the one. Addis should pay me commission for how many people I've recommended this to Grin it's perfect for laminate flooring with a mild detergent or the Method polish.

MrsMiddleMother · 26/03/2022 11:29

I use a spray mop mostly then every couple weeks give it a good clean with a traditional mop and bucket

Rowgtfc72 · 26/03/2022 16:25

Dh has just laid new tiles in the kitchen,, porcelain, but very rough. They're killing my conventional mophead. Can't imagine they'd be any kinder to sponge either.
Any ideas?

BigSkies22 · 27/03/2022 18:19

I just use Method floor cleaner and a couple of damp cloths. Spray, wipe, done. Yes, you are on your knees/crouched in a squat and moving backwards, but I can do the hall (which is over three levels), the breakfast room and kitchen floors in 15 minutes, and I can deal with the skirting boards while I'm down there if the mood takes me. I tried different mops and buckets, but found grubby residues were left around the sides, plus cleaning and storing the wretched things was a PITA.

Rowgtfc72 · 27/03/2022 18:35

Do you know what, I always used to do my floor on my hands and knees and do my kick boards at the same time. Will see if this floor wants to shred microfibre cloths.

Kenwouldmixitup · 27/03/2022 18:41

Me too -microfibre cloth except I glide it along under my foot. I’m not pushing dirty water strong, the cloth gets a dip in clean water each time and thoroughly wrung out so no puddles. Also skirting boards get a wipe down and doors. So low tech and no mop heads hanging around cluttering the place up and environmentally sensitive.

Fairislefandango · 27/03/2022 19:17

I use Method squirty floor cleaner (gorgeous almondy smell) and a flat-headed mop with microfibre pads. The mop comes with a very good tall bucket with a bit you push the mop head through to get rid of excess water, but increasingly I'm not bothering with the bucket, I just wet the pad under the tap a bit when it gets too dry.

clarrylove · 27/03/2022 19:22

You shouldn't mop laminate. It will cause water damage.

Buzzer3555 · 27/03/2022 19:32

Flash speedmop.

Harpydragon · 27/03/2022 20:41

Method floor cleaner and a flat mop here. Smells gorgeous and is quick and easy. The flat mop pad Goes in the wash
