I don't want to have to use bug spray but I need them to be gone by Wednesday afternoon. Help!

You can buy and electric fly killer from homebase/B&Q I think. We bought one and it worked really well. But if you don't get to the actual cause of the fly infestation, they will keep coming back

Get a jar and half fill it with white vinegar a little bit of syrup or honey and a little bit of washing up liquid. They love it. Also remove fruit.

Thank you! Can't get to shops for electric thingy but will get one next time. In the meantime, I'll try revgreen's trap

similar to rev greens idea, fill a jar with grape juice or other sweet smelling juice, tiny bit of washing up liquid, its like a fly morgue in hours

lucyellensmum · 02/01/2008 21:54

revgreen, do you, or have you, by any chance, worked with flies?

WideWebWitch · 02/01/2008 21:54

Yes we used red wine. And put all fruit in the fridge for a while. Worked for us.

You do need to locate where they are coming from - a plant pot, or compost caddy for example

I spent a whole day swatting them in the kitchen before working out DH hadn't emptied the compost caddy for a long time.

Jennster · 02/01/2008 21:56

You've still got them at this time of year? We use one of those umbrella type cake net thingies to cover our fruit.

revgreen · 02/01/2008 22:28

lucyellensmum - I haven't worked in an actual fly morgue but I do have a lot of rotting fruit due to sluttish housekeeping.

TheStepfordChav · 02/01/2008 22:33

You must find the source, mine turned out to come from a 'blown' jar of jam at the back of the cupboard. It was infested with them - disgusting. Got rid of it & they haven't returned.

OverRated · 03/01/2008 00:43

Thanks all - I have a jam jar set up and am waiting...

How can they seem to come from no-where? I have cleaned the house from top to bottom, all open food is in the fridge/ tupperware and they are not in the plants. I am at a loss.

lol @ lapin's DS's hidden banana. I did check DS's toy box

We found our came from a dead mouse that had stepped on the light fitting wires in the ceiling, (frazzle/ burn) and it was crawling with flies. Eeewww!
