Do you have good crockery and everyday crockery?

AddingMustard · 29/01/2022 14:24

Or just crockery?
We use a mix of different eras of plain ikea plates every day, differing shapes and colours. Also kids crockery which is patterned albeit very faded now. DH thinks we should chuck the lot and use our good, wedding crockery as everyday. We rarely have guests, so it hardly ever gets used, maybe 6 times a year.

I was brought up with a set of posh crockery that only came out on special occasions so the idea seems slightly heretical to me. It would free up a cupboard though. Is good crockery a thing of the past?

The only thing I tend to go cheap on bizarrely (and keep the best not even for best!) is "champagne" glasses (read Prosecco / cremant!) as I tend to break them too often (when a bit too under the influence...)

so they have ended up (by smashing default) as IKEA or John Lewis essentials champagne flutes - and the expensive ones don't get used just looked at!

if I was doing a polite and posh celebration I'd use them, but not for generic fizz drinking!

Chickydoo · 29/01/2022 16:06

Everyday we use Emma Bridgewater Black Toast.
Special occasions we have a beautiful Wedgwood service, although hardly ever use it.
We got rid of all the old plates bowls & mugs & I stock of EB in the sales

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 29/01/2022 16:17

No. I don't believe in keeping things 'for best'. Every day should be as 'best' as possible, IMHO Grin

We have Christmas Plates! Including snowman and tree shaped serving platters

We also have Halloween shaped ones

We also have hosting plates and serving trays

We then have a niceish set we use most of the time

We then have the shitty eat in front of the tv with the kids set that’s used a couple of times a week.

It’s stupid but it makes me smile when we bring out the different sets.

You must have lots of cupboards!
applesandpears33 · 29/01/2022 16:26

We have two different sets - a set of Portmeirion Seasons stoneware for every day use. I've bought quite a lot of that from ebay. The set we keep for special use is a Spode gold rimmed set we were given as a wedding present. It wasn't my choice as it can't go in the dishwasher but a relative wanted to give it to us. We use it a little more now the kids are older, but never more than half a dozen times a year.

QuizzicalEyebrows · 29/01/2022 16:33

I've used my decent white Royal Doulton crockery everyday for over 20 years and silver plated cutlery that I inherited that's in a wooden box along with all the other random cutlery items I have.

We tend to only use the silver plated for guests or when everything else might be in the dish washer so not daily and I do hand wash the cutlery. But anyone can help themselves at any time to use them if they want they're not kept away for special occasions only.

QuizzicalEyebrows · 29/01/2022 16:37

Ps random cutlery is not kept in the lined wooden box

TeaAndStrumpets · 29/01/2022 16:47

I am not bothered about dinner plates, but I love nice teacups. I have two sets of Villeroy and Boch in constant use, they are very pretty and go in the dishwasher. I like a proper teapot and have a couple of plain Wedgwood ones which also get put in the dishwasher.

We do have a lot of posh china, silver, cutlery etc inherited from MIL, mostly unused. Sadly it languishes in storage....one day we will go through it, but it's so hard to get rid of someone's pride and joy.

SilverontheTree · 29/01/2022 16:47

Royal Doulton white China for best, Denby Linen seconds for everyday.
My mum has 3 dinner services! No idea who gets the best best😂

HeidiHaus · 29/01/2022 16:50

Nope. Just made sure the dinner set that went on our wedding list was 'good' but easily replaceable plain crockery! We don't have a set for special occasions.

woodhill · 29/01/2022 16:51

So cross, ds has broken one of my Cath Kidston tea plates, had for at least 10 years' but never the rubbish cheap Homebase white ones

LemonMuffins · 29/01/2022 16:54

We just have shit crockery Grin

If I had decent stuff I'd use it though. I don't understand the notion of saving for best. Eat like The Quern every day.

Ha! MIL left labels on her crystal trifle dishes, saying which granddaughter got which one!
RockinHorseShit · 29/01/2022 16:57

Yes & a 3rd set tooBlush

We use the plain white ones for everyday use, a now vintage habitat deep green earthenware basic-ish dinner set & an early 1960s very vintage mint green full dinner & tea set with serving bowls etc for parties & dinner parties, depending on what we'd serve not that any of it gets used anymore-

MintyIguana · 29/01/2022 16:58

We have Denny plain stuff that we use for every occasion. Don't see the point of separate sets. And if it breaks (had 1 pasta bowl break in about 15 years) it's easy to replace.

Vicliz24 · 29/01/2022 17:10

Absolutely none of mine matches at all . I have random selections from every era of my life and I love them all . I do have my nanas special cake plates though and treasure those.

Ozanj · 29/01/2022 17:13

We used to this for glassware until we just decided to bin the shitty stuff. Logic was we bought the good stuff and so should get to use it more often than once in a blue moon

mawbroon · 29/01/2022 17:19

We have Denby that gets used for everything. Some of it is 20+ years old. I chose Imperial Blue because I reckoned it would be available for a long time. I even got some replacement bits with my Tesco points recently!

I don't have any bone china, but I would certainly use it for every day if it was dishwasher proof. Bone China is really hard wearing, despite appearances!

LesLavandes · 29/01/2022 17:19

Yep. I got full Wedgwood dinner service, tea service, coffee service as wedding presents. Also a tonne of posh glass.
I am now divorced and it all sits in cupboards while I use the cheap things from Habitat. 😊

EmmaGrundyForPM · 29/01/2022 17:24

No, we've never had two sets. We just have basic white crockery, so if anything breaks we can easily replace. When we have friends over to dinner, we make the table look really nice but stick to the same crockery.

We do have a posh set of cutlery for "best" but that's easier as it fits under a canteen which then slides under the kitchen sofa.

Sagaris · 29/01/2022 17:32

Portmeirion everything here, and a lot of it - I started collecting it once I escaped from ex h, who wouldn't let me buy it. It's used every day, and has been for 20 years, and I use my nice cutlery too. I get a lot of pleasure from it, it's so pretty!

applesandpears33 · 29/01/2022 17:52

I do like nice glassware too. We have a selection of lovely Edinburgh crystal glasses and I have bought most of them from e bay. Unlike the good china they are used often.

RoseMartha · 29/01/2022 18:13

Used to now I use both because I decided that otherwise the nice stuff wld never get used. The everyday stuff is not complete anymore either eg we have 3 bowls left out of six and 4 plates left etc,

caringcarer · 29/01/2022 18:36

I have everyday white crockery. I have a white dinner and tea service with platinum bands around (can't put in microwave). Then I have several Royal Albert dinner and tea services, Old Country Roses, Lavendar Rose, Memory Lane and V'al For. I use a teapot, little milk jug, and tea cup in bone china everyday on a little bone China tray. Can't use dishwasher with it though. On special occasions I rotate the bone china sets. I know it is old fashioned but I love having a cream tea with cake stand and little silver cake forks. I do it at least once a week.
