Tricky housekeeping issues - mould and limescale

Mould and limescale - such a delight!

I'm living in a rental property and have been here for a couple of years. whilst I thought I knew I was doing in housekeeping front and have certainly learnt many tricks from my granny in the past, I am having a few issues. The property is Victorian and damp - to be expected!

Limescale has reared its ugly head a month ago despite me having lived here for quite a while and not having any issues before. I have tried limescale specific products but there is still a crust (which appeared overnight) deeper in the pan and in a couple of hard to reach areas that I can't remove despite soaking the bowl overnight in product. I have heard about people draining the water and using a pumice stone but this is a rental I don't want to damage the loo.

I'm also having issues with mould. Some of it is related to the property being damp - there is condensation on the inside of the windows every single day even if it's just me here. I do have the heating on twice a day. Most mould is easily removed but what to do about the washing machine seal? I would imagine bleach products would damage it!

Toilet: Harpic Power Plus Toilet Cleaner Tablets. I think they are fabulous for a 'deep clean'.

Washing Machine: Dettol Spray Cleaner Antibacterial Mould & Mildew Remover. Oncd clean, be sure to leave the door open for a day every now and again - means everything dries out and so slows down things like mould. Also, using powder (vs gel tabs) reduces mould and nacterial growth.

Toilet - agree you need the Harpic tablets. Put 2 down not one.

Damp - always leave a window open a crack. Open the bathroom window during and after showering. Don’t dry clothes indoors. Get a dehumidifier if necessary.

Black mould - the best thing I have found is whitening toilet gel

Other limescale deposits - viakal usually works a treat

With the washing machine, open the door after use & look in the rim : if there is a pool of water dry it out with a towel. Also pull the drawer out & empty out the water. I’d leave the door open whe on machine not in use

Toilet - white vinegar, the instructions I read said to get rid of as much water as possible first, which I kind of half did the first time, when it started to build up again I didn't bother and it still worked well but I'm aware for the first treatment - when the limescale was worse it might not have worked as well if I didn't get rid of half-ish of the water.

Damp - get a dehumidifier, also great for drying your clothes

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/11/2021 08:41

If you can afford one, a dehumidifier is brilliant for damp. As a pp said, also fantastic if you need to dry clothes indoors, and of course you can take it with you if and when you move.,

I also find Viakal very good for limescale around e.g. taps. Have to use it regularly, since we’re in a hard water area.
