Major 10 day clutter before moving house.

Hello! I am moving house in 20 days and have decided to completely declutter in the coming 2 weeks.I wonder if anyone else is doing something similar and would like to share notes as they go.
I thought I would start with the Kondo idea of tackling all the clothes in the house. So that is the plan this morning. Then I think it is books, miscellaneous and then sentimental!! Not sure if those categories will be enough. However off I go. Do join in and share your experiences!

I'm moving house in four weeks and will join you. I have a bit of an issue with clothes hoarding for when I've lost weight and my partner and I share the affliction of holding onto things we might need just in case.

petal2019 · 03/11/2021 08:55

Hi! Oo I know I am a terrible hoarder ... of all sorts of stuff. Well I am just going to prevaricate a tiny bit with a coffee this morning and then I shall tackle clothes. Are you on to it today too? look forward to hearing how it is going.

Good idea! We’re moving at the end of the month.

Fallagain · 03/11/2021 11:26

Good luck. I’m going to read on your progress because I need some inspiration.

The best thing I find is to look at everything and ask what do you want to keep. Ask yourself if your house burnt down would you busy it again.

petal2019 · 03/11/2021 12:06

Hi again! Ok... so Im going to tackle clothes in my room first. summer and winter. want and donate.

OP posts:
petal2019 · 03/11/2021 22:29

Well, I hope you are all making progress. I wanted to report back that I had managed to get all our clothes sorted and packed into bin bags. Summer, winter, donate and some still out for the remaining 20 days. Ive also managed to bag up all the remaining bedding so we only have what we are using out.
But the house looks like a bomb has hit it! tomorrow I am doing item 2 of Marie condo... paper... sorting all the paperwork I can find and binning as much as possible.. going to take photos.
it is a major job but I think it is perhaps the most daunting.
Friday will be books
Saturday move on to miscellaneous!! Whatever that means in M Kondos book... I think probably I will have to start doing it room by room then. Anyway bed now and sleeeeep. good night. love to hear how your getting on too!

OP posts:
petal2019 · 03/11/2021 22:29

oh dear.... I forgot ... before do paper I think I will have to do shoes!!

OP posts:
petal2019 · 04/11/2021 04:04

Hi Fallagain,
Yes I know. I keep wondering if I would miss any of the stuff in the attic.
Ive literally not used if for a year!

OP posts:
petal2019 · 04/11/2021 04:15

Right so onward and upward... I think now I am going to tackle the sitting room for an hour which is piled with boxes, mainly empty and generally very disorganised. I need to buy labels for all the plastic sacks of clothes and bedding. Its hard to know how to organise all the stuff. I think a pile for each room in the new house.... kitchen, sitting room, bedroom 1, 2 and 3. Storage in house. Storage in friends garage (while I think about them/sell them). Ebay/gumtree pile. Stuff to go now to charity shop. ok. How are you all doing with yours?

OP posts:
DifficultBloodyWoman · 04/11/2021 04:49

I just wanted to post to give you some encouragement as I am staring at a big pile of papers that need to be sorted out.

petal2019 · 04/11/2021 23:57

Hi @DifficultBloodyWoman, that is very kind. Poor you.... hmm well how are you going to go about dealing with the big pile of papers?
I never did get on to the paperwork, which was the plan today. Instead I simply tidied and sorted all the stuff in the sitting room.... and packed all the extra stuff too.
Im quite pleased... I have a pile for the attic, the front and back bedrooms, the kitchen, the sitting room and the charity shop and my friends garage!
So tomorrow Im going to go through the whole house and find and sort papers!! I think ir will HAVE to be a lay them all on the bed and the floor in piles job.
Ive also been experimenting with photographing papers then chucking them out but I think that this is a bit slow!!
anyway... thanks for reading/ listening..

I must say the more I tidy and chuck out.. the more I feel I dont want the stuff anyway... its getting easier to chuck! x

Hi! I wonder how everyone is getting one with their decluttering. I am getting stuck in again. Ive got a bit waylaid by life.... however I am determined today to get the kitchen and living room back to square one. Ideally I would also like to get my little ones room completely packed up and all the toys put away in boxes; the kitchen crockery packed into boxes and ideally also the bookshelves in the hall packed into boxes. Then I think the next step is to tackle all the papers in my rooms; which I am prevaricating about. SO everything the wrong way round and not at all Marie ko!! But there you go! I think the biggest problem is getting down to it. I wonder if anyone else is having this problem. And once I have done all those boxes I think I am going to have to have another look through and perhaps really just take the best of each. I would SO like to move to my new house and only have minimum amounts of stuff.

OP posts:
petal2019 · 09/11/2021 12:13

So I have 5 hours...
1.Get the kitchen tidy.
12.13

OP posts:
petal2019 · 09/11/2021 13:49

Its now taken 1.5 hrs to get the kitchen straighter.... just taking short pause
Will finish sorting out the rubbish in the kitchen and wash the floor, sort out all the washing
clear the decks
clear the fridge
Didnt think the kitchen would dominate so much today

Oh boy, we’re going to be moving probably early next year and DH filled the attic with his crap 23 years ago and hasn’t touched it since. He’s the world’s biggest procrastinator- any suggestions for getting him to do it other than a pitchfork?
I must tackle my wardrobe, probably 50% should go...... plus 300 books?
Heaven help us!

petal2019 · 09/11/2021 14:16

14.16 ...2 hrs in kitchen tidyish... still have to do the floor..am cream crackered!

OP posts:
petal2019 · 09/11/2021 14:35

ok onward and upward

OP posts:
petal2019 · 09/11/2021 14:42

@YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp
Hello! nice to see your message! I completely relate to the attic full of stuff scenario... I filled ours 1 year ago and CANT bear to think about it!!
I have already packed all my books into boxes and in hindsight I was thinking why am I bothering they are all available in a library. I am trying a new tack... Im thinking of imagining the half empty shelves and going through my daughters boxes again and really just planning to pack the beautiful /important things for her... all the teddies and things can go in boxes in my friends garage for a short time and the things she misses she can fetch out before we bin/sell the rest. I think then I can maybe do the same with mine.
Ive completely thrown out my wardrobe.... almost nothing left.... its quite refreshing... I realised I had SO much stuff I didnt really like. How about you? I definitely think I am going to revise all the stuff I have packed and just choose the very best of each. Really 1st world problems... at least we can maybe pass some of it all on.

OP posts:
petal2019 · 09/11/2021 14:43

and onward again!!

OP posts:
MonkeyPuddle · 09/11/2021 18:13

We start tonight. We move on the 27th. Me, DP, two kids.

I went through the kids clothes today and took everything that doesn’t fit or they don’t wear down to the charity bins. Huge bag for life.

Tonight the plan is to go through and pack up the shit cupboard in the kitchen, the pans we don’t use often and some books.

I’ve ordered some of this big huge laundry bags from Amazon and will pack all the clothes, towels, duvets etc in those.

petal2019 · 12/11/2021 12:16

Just realised the title says major 10 day Clutter rather than De-clutter. I hope that is not what I am doing!
SO, I feel I am making some progresss. Ive just copied you @MonkeyPuddle buying some huge Amazon bags. I think that will be very helpful at the other end when storing it all too... storing the good stuff like duvets etc.
So my aim today is to finish all the rooms in this house. So that is the little sitting room
kitchen
hallway
landing
small bedroom
my bedroom

Then the next thing is the attic which is chock with stuff.
Then the yard ... so onwards.

OP posts:
petal2019 · 12/11/2021 12:17

Then I am going to revise all the things I have packed and just take one of each thing and bin/ temporarily store the other stuff in my friends garage until we see if we miss it.

OP posts:
petal2019 · 12/11/2021 12:18

SO... small sitting room

stil to do:
clean the rug
dust/clean window

Now.... 12.18.

OP posts:
petal2019 · 12/11/2021 14:04

Ok: all done in the little sitting room. Now on to packing up the kitchen.
Try and weed out all the barely used things there amongst the crockery.

We're planning on moving next year and I've been inspired by this thread to start the decluttering now.

This past week, 4 bin bag of old clothes have been dropped off at the charity shop.

Tomorrow I'm tackling the book cases and selecting books for the car boot sale.

On Sunday I'm tackling the paperwork as we have a paper recycling collection next wk.

I'm attempting to do a bit each weekend until we move to make packing easier. Financially it doesn't make sense to take the junk with you as it will cost you money.
