Decluttering one item a day thread number 19 – running out of ideas for original titles

Another ‘one a day’ thread. We’re still here.

This is a group of mumsnetters who are slowly decluttering our spaces and organising our lives, chatting as we go.

We all want to live in a nicer, emptier, clearer more relaxing environment and this is our space to talk and moan about our husbands and children who often do not share our desire for such a peaceful, decluttered haven!

We only aim to get rid of one item a day, when we have time, although often we manage more. Newbies are always welcome to join us.

Got rid of some hangers, random storage items and reusable bags (I feel bad getting rid of them but one of them I got in 2013 so it's had a long life) and sorted out some more clothes recycling and charity shop pile.

I feel like it’s very slow going here with both of us shattered and now getting ill ( there’s Covid and something else going around DS school yeah but he has been vaccinated once at least now they’re asking his year to test daily at home ) , and DH back at work but we’re managing to get to school and work on time and deal with the dog and all this new routine for everybody so that’s something I guess. A bit of progress every day ; few more boxes unpacked ,furniture moved in it’s place , various black bags of laundry sorted and washed ,and random things put away etc. I’m exited DH finally got a pole put up in the coat cupboard last night in the hall so we can hang the coats there on hangers ! In the weekend I’ll ask him to assemble the shoe racks . Need to decide what goes in the under stairs cupboard that’s smaller than the last but we’ll have lots of storage in the garage and the attic . Then today a huge declutter ; our old house and the rest of the mortgage ! We completed on it today hurray ! I’d be more exited if I wasn’t so tired ... The estate agent called about the rental house we just moved out of and asked about viewings as I suspected since it’s getting to the 2 m before end of our tenancy period . They have someone that wants it right away so we might well save a lot of money not having to pay in full for the next 2 m if they get a new tenant in instead . Now we have to organise rest of the dump stuff to be collected and for it to be cleaned , sell our bike box and transport bikes here before we have the secure shed built in this garden which isn’t ideal . DH is closing the utilities for our own old house atm . Last night we got the tv installed in the open plan kitchen dining family room and the service was well worth the money since they took over an hour so I wouldn’t have wanted to try to do it ourselves ! It makes pottering around the kitchen nicer being able to have news on or what ever . DH night table came too and I just got a message about booking a new dining table delivery so I do hope this is in good condition unlike the last one . Would be nice to have a proper table to eat at ! Then it’s just a chest of drawers for DH , a glass doored cabinet and the missing mirror left to arrive from this company I have to call about . Now that we’ve completed I will get on with ordering a few more bits I wanted and we can start on the garage after we get the box piles out . the skip the builders let us use the other day was too small for much of our cardboard and packaging mountain ( from all the furniture deliveries mainly ) and we haven’t even unpacked all boxes yet so more recycling coming . Need to discuss the garden with the landscapers at some point and order the trees as well . I managed a bit of admin today booked kids dentist and hygienist for Oct half term when I can take them and I booked the dog in with the vet to get his kennel cough vaccine apparently that’s all he needs now since he’s doing well at 1 y old next week . He will have his booster jabs in January . Yesterday I booked DD into a pony afternoon at nearby stables ,she’s exited . The full pony week was booked up since I’d left it when I though we’re travelling but this is a nice surprise for her anyway . I think I’ll ship the kids to grandma’s for a bit ,they have two weeks off . I also managed to book a Christmas delivery slot with Ocado now that they’re releasing them . A have a laundry list of other things to book and buy and organise that are not doing with the move . And then still lots to do with the move like more address changing . Will chip at this slowly . I will try to order DD a bit more winter uniform since we only got 2 kilts and a few shirts when we had to get all the stuff for this new school , also ordering DS school pictures , Halloween stuff for kids DD might want to dress up and she doesn’t have really any costumes atm she can fit in , need to get doggy a present each from the kids for his birthday next week ,and book the water softener people in for installation in November ,the dining table delivery next week etc . DH is at least working from home tomorrow although nothing is set up so will see how he’ll manage . He’s doing the school runs . I’ve warned him I am going to rest and unpack in my own room and do admin not look after the dog for one day or be polishing the kitchen and utility and doing endless laundry like every day since we moved here . The dog would have his doggy daycare but if it’s just raining we won’t send him in . Just remembered I need to cancel it and book a weekend ocado delivery if it’s still possible . I’m feeling increasingly like I have a cold and my eyes are just closing on me like every night this week when I’ve been useless in the evenings .A plus of the day besides completing ; the rest of the blinds arrived inc my black out ones so I can hopefully have them installed tomorrow . Also from today Starbucks delivers here so that brightened my day !
More stuff that I don’t want to keep after all being uncluttered as we unpack like a sock hanger that’s scratched and we don’t use anyway , a few old scissors and so on . I want to think carefully about what we really need as we unpack and throw way more or at least have it neatly packed in the attic and not out until I decide if I need it at all.

I sold some nice baby clothes and posted them yesterday. I have taken all of the items out of a cupboard and am being ruthless. I hope this will create better storage in my utility room and I can get some worktop space back!

I booked a ocado for tomorrow , ordered DD more winter uniform , Halloween stuff for the kids , DS school picture and changed my credit card and bank account addresses online .The wardrobe shelves came today so the we can then organise them better ,it should make a difference they’re a bit of a mess atm . DH did the school run and is setting up to work downstairs. I’m eating late breakfast then sleeping more . We are definitely getting a bit sick I can feel it in my throat . Later I’ll try to get more admin done and some unpacking and laundry too .
Now DH just got a call that the landlord wants to have a viewing today and we haven’t yet left keys at the concierge so he has to drive back there tidy up and vacuume a bit . Then we’ll leave a set of keys at the concierge so we don’t have to do this again .In the weekend DH will go to see if he’d be able cart the stuff to dump himself and we have asked if landlord wants it cleaned now or later . Still need to sell the bike box and transport the bikes here . We’re motivated for them to get an early tenant and save thousands possibly not having to pay 2 more months rent ! I have phone calls to make but first I need to sleep I had about 4-5 h again and my eyes are just closing

Minimal decluttering here. I have been allowed to get rid of tights, and have put some books up for sale for dd1.

Fell off thread a bit.

A pasta bowl broke and I’m today chucking one of the kids “baby” plates as it’s got a huge crack in it.

Yesterday got rid of a scarf, it's lovely and warm but itchy so I rarely wear it. Need to find an out for today. There's an ornament I've been meaning to get rid of

Two bags of old clothing dropped off for school collection. They sell on by weight for charity. Annoyingly I had a few pairs of old shoes that I forgot to include.

Still no sign of my courier pick up, they failed to show for the rebooked appointment too. Will drop it off at the collection point tomorrow as I'll be nearby.

We have quite a busy weekend ahead so not sure how much will get done. Need a quick win!

Also posted a random dvd for cats to watch for my sisters 2 indoor cats, ridiculous but funny, one of my cats liked it.

Not a lot, but at least something left the house.

Unsubscribed from a lot of marketing emails. Realised some companies were emailing me every day! Overkill surely.
Also threw out a make up bag.

Sorting through the cupboards in the kids room today! Haven't been through them since we moved in 4 years ago! 😂 have both kids at home today too so should be fun! 🤦‍♀️

I handed over some books to a friend at parkrun this morning, they’ve been waiting in the hallway for about a year!

Not much else happening this weekend.

Have so far found 4 duvet cover sets that are for a double duvet that we no longer have (we now have king sized), a pair of old curtains, an inflatable swim ring, a framed poster, 5 travel mugs, a cutlery tray, a Harry Potter cushion and 2 hold-all suitcases that can all go!

Previously filled bag dropped at charity shop. New one started with a clip top storage jar we no longer need - the famiy member that used to like earl grey no longer drinks it Washing some old shower curtains located in a cupboard will add to the bag if clean enough. If not something other than socks for the rag bag Aiming to list two things on ebay tomorrow hopefully get the pre Xmas buyers.

I'm not really doing one a day, but I will celebrate what goes when it goes.

Today I got a load of Halloween stuff out the door (or nearly gone, Monday delivery).

Last weekend had a blitz on youngest teenager's clothes (outgrown).

About 2-3 weeks ago I got a small carboot full to the tip.

I've been doing a good job of getting thru lotions & potions too -- shampoos or soaps my adult daughter didn't want any more but weren't quite empty.

This thread is reminding me that daughter gave a box of stuff I forgot to look thru, but she said we could chuck. Must go find...

Miraculously the books I put up for sale have left the building thanks to facebook marketplace.

I have found another 4 books in dd1s room that she has allowed me to donate / sell on ziffit if possible. And a tiny witches outfit from many Halloweens ago. Will try to sell that.

Yesterday I put two of my summer dresses in the charity bag (I’d bought two new ones during the summer so trying to stick to one in/ one out).

I also sorted through DD’s clothes to pack away her summer dresses and tops, and put her long sleeved dresses and tops out in her wardrobe and drawers. The summer stuff is in a bag at the bottom of her wardrobe to review next spring in case any of it still fits her then. I also put three of her dresses and two tops into the outgrown clothes bag. So a combination of decluttering and general organising! This was all done in the morning while DH was with DD - she’d had dance class first thing, and had some chill-out time after that.

DH is out all day today as he’s going to see friends, which means I might not get anything done today. I can leave DD watching something or playing on the iPad, but she often comes to find out what I’m doing if she’s on her own for too long.

Ds had his birthday party yesterday. So things out:

Cups
Party bags
Paper plates
Balloons (so many balloons)
Some decorations have gone to dsis for school
Leftover party bag stuff has gone to dsis for school
My sanity.

I’m going to aim to spend today getting rid of stuff and resetting the house. A bit.

Focusing on house work today rather than decluttering as house has got a bit of a mess while I've been searching for things to go, so if I can get the house tidy would put me in a good place to start the new week off and hopefully find a few bits in the process!

Shower curtains are sparkling so are in the charity bag will wash the telescopic pole and hanging loops to join them too. Nothing listed for ebay yet but i will try and fit that in later.

Must share a great quote with you I found on a thread in chat. From a poster called FindingMeno Get rid of as much stuff as possible. Instead of asking if something brings you joy, ask if you can be arsed to keep it clean Tea nearly exited my nose i laughed so hard

Packed away all the party stuff.
Deflated all the balloons.

Sorted out two bags for charity shop full of toys. Yay.

Bag of too small uniform passed along at school today.

Today is just reclaiming the house from mess as we had a busy weekend. Need to go food shopping so could possibly take a bag to the charity shop on the way.

I'm back on track now. Had the gp yesterday and hospital today so just nervously cleaning today I think while I wait to go over

Not much achieved over the weekend. Got rid of some plastic packaging at the supermarket this morning.
