Decluttering one item a day thread number 19 – running out of ideas for original titles

stealthninjamum · 21/09/2021 13:36

Another ‘one a day’ thread. We’re still here.

This is a group of mumsnetters who are slowly decluttering our spaces and organising our lives, chatting as we go.

We all want to live in a nicer, emptier, clearer more relaxing environment and this is our space to talk and moan about our husbands and children who often do not share our desire for such a peaceful, decluttered haven!

We only aim to get rid of one item a day, when we have time, although often we manage more. Newbies are always welcome to join us.

Previous thread here.

We received our order of 3 items of furniture yesterday one a mirror was missing so chased that they’re finding out for me . Also turned out the two counter stools counted as two orders . The company did later yesterday get back to me about the table and say they’re getting the delivery comp that’s harder book with to collect it and will send a replacement but I understood that to be in early oct so we’ll have to manage until then .

Thanks! I went a bit overboard with balloon….

Nordicmom · 24/09/2021 08:58

Happy birthday to your 4 y old Ememem 🥳 ! Those days seem so long ago , mine being 9 and 16 already … I do have a puppy’s 1st soon though and actually have got him balloons with paw prints on them and a dog friendly cake kit 😁

Nordicmom · 24/09/2021 09:00

Rushing around here to finish a carload before DH sets off for the new house and then straight to the funeral . He’s brought down the bathroom contents from two bathrooms so I’ll deal with those and the clean laundry mountain . Then we have the shoe racks left downstairs and bits and pieces

IncessantNameChanger · 24/09/2021 10:41

Happy birthday little Ememem! My ds would wet himself if he had that balloon!

Kids are off to disability playgroup tomorrow so I need to sort out the clothes to donate to them today.

I'm going in!..... time a rope to my waist 🤣... I might need pulling back out from the wardrobe

stealthninjamum · 24/09/2021 12:57

incessant I hope you’re ok Flowers your last post sounded more positive. Being thirty minutes away from being visitor ready would be a fantastic achievement.

We’ve all been poorly with colds but fortunately negative lft tests. Poor dd2 feels like a leper at school but she’s really snotty.

So today I made a start on actually getting stuff out. I have thrown away a lot of my old toys and a broken cup. I have also put stuff in the Pile OF Crap in three bags to go to the charity shop. I’m about to put the bags into the car but as the petrol stations around here are running out of petrol I’m not going to get rid of them yet.

Happy birthday to mini ememem. That is an epic balloon!

Good luck in the wardrobe Incessant!

Still nothing leaving my house. Am packaging up the maternity clothes this weekend though as have had them on Vinted three weeks with no interest.

Mommabear20 · 24/09/2021 14:43

Have just watched a video on YouTube by Emily Norris (favourite YouTuber ever!!), it's quite an old video, but she challenged herself to get rid of 100 items from her house, so I'm going to try and do that myself! Have got to the point now where nothing jumps out at me to declutter, but I'm 100% sure there's stuff that could go if I'm being ruthless!

IncessantNameChanger · 24/09/2021 15:11

166 out from around 3 hours sifting two kids wardrobes. I'm very happy!

I really need to join you all, my house is a building site (hence the name) and has been for a few years now.

I long for minimalist and tidy but the DC have other ideas!

Nothing has specifically left the house today but it was rubbish day and lots of Dd’s precious artwork may have been recycled….

I have piles of Playmobil to sell, DD wants to have a ‘yard sale’ for loads of things she’s decided to get rid of (she is the only one of the DC I’ve succeeded with in getting them to part with crap). But does mean we have piles of stuff in the spare room waiting for a community sale day.

The builders will soon break through from the rear extension into the back of the living room and kitchen. I need to clear as much as poss out before then!

Pineappleapple · 24/09/2021 22:16

Some more baby clothes in the charity shop bag. Mainly non sentimental things - boring baby vests and a few bits lol never wore

ememem84 · 25/09/2021 07:50

Managed to get rid of all the packaging from ds’ presents yesterday so that’s a win. I almost kept the gift bags from Amazon but had a word with myself.

Same again next week when he has his party with his pre school friends.

Dsis was here yesterday and said she has a huge laundry bag full of jumpers etc that I might like. We are having lunch at doarents tomorrow so she’s going to take it to their house and I’m going to have a rummage.

I did bring in 4 skirts I found in charity shop on Thursday but only 2 fit properly so the other two will be re-donated.

Need to sort recycling today and get up in the loft to see if I have any more baby sleep bags for colleagues baby.

Mommabear20 · 25/09/2021 08:25

DM is coming this morning to watch DC so it's into the shed for me and sort through the Christmas decorations and hopefully sell some we don't use in the run up to Christmas! 🤞🤞 if I do it properly I think I can half what we have!

ememem84 · 25/09/2021 08:37

Wow mommabear good luck! I have gotten into the habit of buying new decorations each year.

Probably shouldn’t….

Mommabear20 · 25/09/2021 08:49

@ememem84 same!! We've always got boxes of things we don't use so it's time for it to go!

Mommabear20 · 25/09/2021 11:57

Well not quite half but got rid of 6 out of 13 boxes of Christmas stuff! 😂

Pineappleapple · 25/09/2021 14:06

Momma bear wow!! Well done!

Mommabear20 · 25/09/2021 14:27

Just posted 15 items on gumtree! 🤞 they go quickly!

stealthninjamum · 25/09/2021 15:28

ememem I love the balloon. Belated happy birthday to your ds!

mommabear awesome effort. I decluttered my Xmas decorations a couple of years ago apart from a box of pink decorations that I never use but I can’t part with. I have themed trees each year - red and gold, silver / white or sometimes I’d do pink but I haven’t done pink for ages so I should probably get rid of all of them. What makes it hard is it’s not like I can get rid of a couple, I’d literally have to get rid of all of them. Maybe I can do it?

Welcome livingonabuildingsite. I too have piles of crap waiting to go but this is the week I will do it!

I have put two books in a charity shop bag and emailed dd1s school to find out how I can donate stuff to their second hand shop.

Frantic packing here it seems just to be never ending 🤬. DD went to school open day with her school friends mom and then to theirs for a playdate thankfully . DS has been helping . We had a grocery delivery to the new house and the tv mount came finally so DH went there with another load then got more boxes in the way back . DH has now gone to pick up DD . I’m finally having a shower and then a coffee ,I feel very tired . DH still has virtually all the furniture to take apart . I got DS to bring me rest of the bathrooms Contents from topfloor , rest of his wardrobe contents mainly school clothes , all the shoes from the racks down stairs , packed the dog food cupboard, packed the stuff from pantry I’d left . He’ll also walk the dog again etc . I’ve dealt with the enormous laundry mountain last night and send the clean folded stuff off in baskets straight to the new drawers and wardrobes today, sorted out DS school clothes , I am nearly finished with dd DS and dh toiletries getting rid of old and unwanted some going to foodbank some to bin , then I’ll have to go through shoes and try to get rid of some of them . Then packing more sheets and towels , my own and dogs toiletries etc . The truck is coming at 9 am and MIL going straight to new house . I don’t know how I’ll sleep on a mattress on the floor I’ll have trouble getting up I’m sure but we’ll have to take apart all furniture tonight since movers coming so early and it’s a big poster bed so might take a while

stealthninjamum · 25/09/2021 17:47

I hadn’t intended to go shopping by car until this petrol madness is over but dd2 remembered she needed some accessories for some school charity day. So I filled the car with three very big charity shop bags and a big bag of bottles.

I was upset in the charity shop as the volunteers were moaning about people donating stuff with comments like ‘you think people have had 18 months to clear out their house it would stop but they’re deluging us with their rubbish.’ It really upset me as I always give really good quality stuff and make an effort to make sure all toy sets are complete etc. Today I was giving away a couple of unopened, unwanted presents. It’s a local cause rather than big national charity so it make me feel like tipping it all in landfill - obviously I won’t.

Awesome job!!

I could probably do with getting rid of things. But at the same time I love most of the things we have. I love choosing who will go on the tree.

DollyPartBaked · 25/09/2021 19:37

Hello I need to join this thread as I definitely think little and often (I.e. daily!) is the way to go with two small children. I am also guilty of piling stuff to go / stuff to sort and then it being weeks and weeks till it actually leaves my house.

Day 1: I took a formula bottle machine which we never ended using to a woman's aid charity - it left the house! This came from the loft so not that satisfying. I also threw out a pair of DC's broken sunglasses. Starting small here!

I have also sorted a bag for fabric recycling which hasn't left so I won't count it.

IncessantNameChanger · 25/09/2021 19:42

Stealth that is shitty of the volunteers. We make money out of nearly everything at the shop I volunteer for. Only a tiny fraction goes in the bin. Why do they volunteer if they dont like it?
