Decluttering one item a day thread number 19 – running out of ideas for original titles

Another ‘one a day’ thread. We’re still here.

This is a group of mumsnetters who are slowly decluttering our spaces and organising our lives, chatting as we go.

We all want to live in a nicer, emptier, clearer more relaxing environment and this is our space to talk and moan about our husbands and children who often do not share our desire for such a peaceful, decluttered haven!

We only aim to get rid of one item a day, when we have time, although often we manage more. Newbies are always welcome to join us.

Previous thread here.

Hello Smile I'm hoping to keep up with this thread. I've done a massive shredding and destroying session with paperwork and admin from about 10 years ago to present 🤦🏻‍♀️ I feel treat after it even if it was just stuffed in carrier bag in my wardrobe and isn't visible that I've spent hours doing it 😬

londonmummy1966 · 30/12/2021 17:21

Hello @WrappedInRed - paperwork is such a nightmare so well done on sorting that out!

I put together another bag of stuff and took it to the charity shop - it is getting harder to find stuff to go in there though. I'm going to have to start on the more difficult clothes and books. The good thing is that I have found a charity clothes bin in TKMaxx so more options for dropping off in the evenings etc when the charity shops are shut...

I've also gone through all the baskets on the remaining shelf in my laundry room and chucked out lots of dried up glue, empty battery packets and DH has sorted through the various chargers - those for garden equipment are going in the shed and those that are for long departed items have gone in the bag of electrical disposals. As they were all in matching baskets you don't really notice the difference but at least I know! The other task in the laundry room is the gloryhole under the stairs where we keep the hoover/ironing board and DH's stash of tools and DIY bits. I think I might delegate that section to him....

I've also sold one of the DC's old books on ebay so I'm going to organise for the postman to collect that tomorrow.

In work for 6, out by 20 past. Unexpected day off so will see what I can sort while decluttering the fridge😁

MrsTidyHouse · 31/12/2021 09:00

Residual bin out today, so binned ancient manky pillow and replaced it with one from the overbuying stash in my giant cupboard from when I wasn't thinking clearly and didn't know what I had or where I'd put things.

Picked up a large upturned box lid piled high with paper, electronics, extension cords and similar. Put it on my bed and the whole lot slid onto the laminate floor and across the room. Found two radios in the mess and their mains cables. Enjoyed tuning them in last night and they will come in handy around the house.

Today I will look at the papers that fell, and at the very least put them where they belong.

Heading out with THREE Vinted sales. One of which was my big ticket item, £85 for a pair of Docs. Really glad as those three items have delcluttered half a drawer of space.

Going to drop off two items (fan and a diffuser) at the electrical bank, plus a bottle of glass. Plus two bags of clothing bank items.

Last night I took down Christmas decs. Haven’t decluttered any but did change how I packed them which resulted in getting rid of almost a whole blue bag of recycling and freed up two plastic boxes! Wild!

Decluttered one serving dish and two mugs from kitchen.

Today I will list a few more Vinted bits and continue ‘upstairs decluttering’. Having a mental think about whats going to the tip next week too. So far I have:
A duvet
Bath panel
Rug x 2
Old shelf

CatrinVennastin · 31/12/2021 11:38

@Bigoldhag I am a Vinted convert too! Sold two coats and a bag on there before xmas and the cash covered getting DH a really good quality lambswool jumper for xmas so total win win.

CatrinVennastin · 31/12/2021 11:46

Just catching up with the thread today. Happy New Year to you all.

Absolutely no decluttering has been done here since the end of November as Nov/Dec is the busiest time of year for my business so I have been flat out. Then both DD2 and DH tested positive for covid on 21st Dec so we've been in isolation since then.

It meant having to cancel our family xmas which DH's brother got the absolute hump about. (He works in the Middle East and wanted to bring his new GF over to meet all of us). They could have still come and met the rest of the family but he decided to be a twat about it.

Anyway... onwards and upwards into 2022. My first task is to redecorate DD1's room as two of the walls are water damaged after our chimney collapse/roof leak back in November.

seperatedmum · 31/12/2021 11:47

stealthninjamum this was and is my stumbling block for decluttering and cleaning- getting stuff out and making it worse 😕 it makes me not even start sometimes, I used to say to STBXH that's just there for now... I don't know whether this is good or bad lol 😝 bad probably 🤣

Bigoldhag · 31/12/2021 13:24

@CatrinVennastin its great! Makes selling the smaller items worth while unlike ebay!

londonmummy1966 · 31/12/2021 13:41

Glad people are making progress. I'm not doing anything today as I need to make myself look OK for an evening out and that takes serious amounts of work these days.

However, I just wanted to thank everyone on the thread for their support and wish you all a happy new year. I've also been back over my posts since I joined 2 months ago feeling overwhelmed. I thought it might help others to see what a little bit each day (and that is all it has been) adds up to. SO here are my outs (excluding the black bin bags of rubbish)...

To charity (in full or part)
1 bag to Thrift+
1 bag to isecondthat
12 bags of books
clarinet and viola
35 bags to the charity shop
1 bin bag of soft toys
30 mini knitted hats for the innocent smoothie/age concern campaign

To neighbours
Kenwood chef, apron, children's baking stuff and over 100 pastry cutters
5 bags of craft stuff
Bag of old lunch boxes and flasks
metal detector
2 hobby horses
chemistry set
music stand
ukulele
cello stand
bin bag of ring binders
crate of lego
over the door shelf unit

Plus 13 items sold via ebay (including a cello to a mum on another thread!!)

And I repurposed a torn silk scarf when I got the sleeves of my coat relined!!

Writing it down like that makes me realise that I have done a lot and that a little a day really works, so thank you for this thread giving me the boot up the arse I needed and for all your support.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 31/12/2021 15:51

everyone is making such progress, well done!

A very slow day today for me, only pottering about.
Happy New Year everyone, see you on the other side!

I'm sorry everyone, I'm an annoying Resolutioner who is late to the party and jumping on the band wagon because there's a New Year in sight. One of my 2022 Resolutions is to Have Less Stuff.

In the spirit of "little and often" I'd like to do one thing per day. Today I did the top of my bedside table and the first drawer. Most of this consisted of moving things elsewhere, so will have to be dealt with later down the line, but for now the top is empty and the drawer only has the stuff that should be there.

Looked in to the bottom drawer but the lovely pyjamas that are two sizes too small that I can't bring myself to throw away were a bridge too far today.

HellonHeels · 31/12/2021 22:11

HNY everyone! I'm an untidy aspiring minimalist. Christmas clutter is making it worse.

However a good recycling centre run today, large bag of textiles, lots of cardboard boxes and two old and horrible venetian blinds.

Then a declutter of some of the overabundant nettles and brambles from the garden. Feels good!

Decluttering club thread 20(22)! Is the new thread for 2022! Tried tagging everyone then it posted without them! 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️
