Is anyone doing this/just started?

We just started this week and oh my goodness, our house is clean! Someone could turn up unexpectedly and I could let them in and not die of shame!

Even toddler DD came downstairs today and said 'Oh, it's clean here!' Blush Grin

@HemanOrSheRa
we fostered three puppies but were complete failures so ended up with 4 dogs! (2 already here, kept two of the pups).

This is ace. My pointy dog is a rescue who was fostered before we homed him.

HemanOrSheRa · 14/09/2021 19:36

It's definitely paid for itself. I've hired a rug doctor before. But booking it, dragging the machine out to the car and returning it is such a bloody faff. Our lounge carpet was the same, just awful Blush. It's lovely and clean now!

Never, ever foster dogs or puppies is my top tip for a clean home (or have teen boys)Grin.

SylvanasWindrunner · 14/09/2021 19:43

Yes, we are in the arse-end of nowhere so we'd need to schlepp into the city probably, wrangle it into the car, blah blah. I have a birthday coming up - maybe I'll ask for one Grin

We got vax carpet cleaner direct from vax and had free steam cleaner. I find it quite heavy but OH is happy to do the carpets at the mo as it's a novelty! We have a light carpet in dining room and used to pay £50 to get it cleaned. Vax has paid for itself and is handy for the heavy use/dirty areas without doing whole room.

Gufo · 14/09/2021 19:57

I switched bedrooms for kitchen to start the week with the big guns rather than running out of energy by Thursday. Still have a few tasks to do - work plus poorly dc means I'm distracted. Anything I can do will make it better than usual though!

Also booked a window cleaner and got the weekly shop delivered so being productive there.

Oh I love pointers Indecisivelurcher! One of my friends has 3 vizslas and volunteers for a vizsla rescue but they do foster and adopt all pointy/gundog breeds.

I certainly had no intention of having 4 dogs. The rescue that I got our second dog from asked me if I would foster 3 sibling puppies together. 'Yeah, sure', says I. Thinking we could love and squish puppies for a few weeks until they were adopted. DS fell in love with the boy dog. Three is doable. One of the girls was adopted and settled really well Smile. The second girl was adopted but didn't settle (adopters ignored everything we told them to do 🙄) so returned her. The rescue were happy to restart the adoption process but DP was adamant that if she came back to us, she stayed. Daft bugger. So there we go! 4 dogs wrecking the joint Grin.

Redcrayons · 14/09/2021 20:43

Sort of did the level 1 jobs. The laundry had to go on last night as DS discovered he had no clean trousers.

Level 2 hoovered and dusted all bedrooms and cleaned the mirrors in mine. Also did the visible skirting boards thanks to the prompts to thread.

I got stuck on ‘tidy away anything that doesn’t belong’ as I really need to boot camp it. But I did more than is did last week, so that’s progress.

Indecisivelurcher · 14/09/2021 20:53

Ah sorry, that's my bad calling him a pointy dog which is what we do at home, he's actually a lurcher! Hence my user name 😁

Ohhhhhh. Lurchers are gorgeous! All lovely legs and beautiful eyes Smile. I love seeing them run Smile. They were my Dad's favourite second to nutty Dallys! My dream dog, when I retire and can go full on mad dog lady, is a BORZOI 😍.

Anyway, are we hoovering our lamp/light shades? It's missing on the app list, I think? I'm going to add it to the room days. Ours get really dusty Confused and I usually only do it when I give a room a good going over and the fluff is an inch thick Grin.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 14/09/2021 21:31

Cats are great for wrecking the place as well. We have an older one and two kittens at the moment (as well as 17 chickens and 2 ferrets). The kittens leave a trail of destruction behind them wherever they go, including up the curtains. One of them peed in a basket of clean washing this evening Angry And DS's PE t-shirt for tomorrow was in it, so that's all been washed again already and is now back in the dryer.

DH put the first coat of sealer on the garage floor so at least that project is actually moving along. I'm looking forward to getting everything packed into it nicely, and packing the garden stuff away for the winter. Cosy times ahead Smile

Indoctro · 14/09/2021 22:25

So I have tried this but failed

So Level 1 it takes me 15 minutes to Hoover just downstairs

Level 2 bathrooms - I was 45 minutes to clean my main bathroom with a bath and shower - but I've 3 more bathrooms all with showers

So level 1 would take me 45 - 60 minutes and Level 2 at least 90 minutes

That's a lot of cleaning per day Confused

Is it really only meant for small houses with 1 bathroom and say 2/3 beds.?

Row1n · 14/09/2021 22:48

I reckon hoovering the lampshades can be done on the friday focus for that room, unless its a particularly dusty house.

I love dogs and cats, but the hair everywhere grosses me out when we go to sils house (Im rrally not fussy, hence why Im on this page Blush but the number of cups of tea Ive been served with dog hair in has really put me off - also the early morning walks and picking up pooh - I do love dogs really!) Oh and I deal with enough 'presents' [read dead/half dead critters] from my neighbours cats so I really dont want any more! I shall stick to rabbits because if you dont feed them too many dandelion leaves, their pooh is small and virtually smell free if cleaned out every day or two, and theyre bloody cute!

I only half did the bedrooms today but I did more decluttering of paperwork and general junk in the kitchen so I figured it balances out! I have also managed to start the organised christmas (hides!!) Ive booked a day out for each of the children (one believer one not) and have bought the first main present and am researching the best price for the next one. That's been spurred on really by everyone talking about huge shortages this year, especially tech gifts because apparently the micro chips are in short supply? No idea if it's true, but we always try and plan presents any time from the summer on, mainly because we used to have such a tight budget that we had to spread out the spending and make use of any special offers as they arose, and its stuck!
I have guests tomo so Im not sure how much I'll get done but I will whizz around and do as much as possible before they arrive and try not to be a hot sweaty mess when I answer the door!

How many hours do you spend cleaning now? Say, if you do it all at once? It's definitely not about Mrs Hinch levels of show home perfection. It's about a liveable level of 'good enough' and breaking that down into manageable chunks of time to fit around your life, family and the home you live in.
Popitdontstopit · 14/09/2021 22:52

45 mins to clean a bathroom? Do you keep a swimming pool in there? Grin I think your standards are a little higher than most!

Row1n · 14/09/2021 22:53

The idea is to do a little in each room, but regularly, so you dont need to hoover every day unless very hairy dogs etc. So on that rooms day, do what needs to be done, the the next week those jobs may not need to be done so you can clean the mirrors and windows instead for example. Personally I dont do the whole list every time as I dont feel we need it, and Id rather sit on my arse than do more housework even if the house would look amazing if I did do more!

Indoctro · 14/09/2021 23:10

@HemanOrSheRa if I clean house top to bottom it takes me about 5/6 hours and longer if I do inside of windows.

Yes it's takes me 45 minutes to do main bathroom, I wash shower then dry it completely, I clean toilet and sink and polish mirrors , clean the bath then hoover /wash down the floors. It honestly takes me that long but yes it is absolutely spotless after that .

Ok so TOMM is about just having a tidy kinda of house.? Ok so I do like a spotless house so maybe that's where I'm going wrong it's just not for me, I did wonder how people managed to do everything in such a short time, that explains it.

Popitdontstopit · 14/09/2021 23:13

I used to clean bathrooms for a living (in a hotel). You can clean one perfectly well in half that time. Mine isn't just "tidy" thanks very much!

Indoctro · 14/09/2021 23:21

Maybe you can but I can't, to clean it properly that's how long it takes me. Not much else I can say on that really

So to do 4 bathroom I'm over 90 minutes and definitely not 30 minutes. I couldn't even do all the showers in that time.

HemanOrSheRa · 14/09/2021 23:24

if I clean house top to bottom it takes me about 5/6 hours and longer if I do inside of windows. That's about the same amount of time, split over five days, size of home and occupants allowing, that the system allows for, I reckon.

Popitdontstopit · 14/09/2021 23:27

Yes if you've given the house/bathroom etc a really good clean, and are then spot focusing daily, you'd don't need another deep clean each week. In this system that'd be a boot camp.

Indoctro · 14/09/2021 23:36

Hmm yeah ok then you are probably right. I think I need to try again as maybe stick it out for a month and see how I get on .

I will have a look at boot camp, maybe I should do that for a week then jump into the normal routine

It just felt like I was cleaning heaps daily but at least it's not wiping out a huge part of one day like my cleaning does at the moment

Probablyinpain · 14/09/2021 23:45

Ooh can I join please. I love this method but have real issues sticking with it. Finding balance difficult at the moment so this should help. I'm going to start tomorrow but also mixing in a bit of bootcamp as I've been sorting lots round the house.

Today I've done the dreaded under stairs cupboard, sorted the toddlers clothes nice and organised into new drawers and cleared my junk draw in the kitchen. Excited to get back into it as I loved the difference it made to my house!

goes off to see if I still have the app

HemanOrSheRa · 15/09/2021 00:04

You need to give it 8 weeks Indoctro. A full cycle of the Friday Focus areas and give yourself chance to adapt bits to suit you, your home and your family. I bloody HATE cleaning. But I also like a (reasonably) clean, tidy and comfortable home. My partner and DS really don't care that much but do their fair share.

I used to have a cleaner one day a week for 3 hours but I realised that whilst everything was lovely for a day or two we were still doing stuff every day anyway. Makes much more sense to do little and often in an organised way. For us anyway Smile.
