How do you wash the cloth you clean the loo with?

I clean the seat and rim with a cloth. But then what do you do with that? It feels wrong to chuck it in with tea towels but then washing it on its own also feels wasteful. I don’t really want to use disposables as I’m trying to cut down on single use items. What’s the answer?

@MilkywayMonarch22

The toilet is the only place is use antibacterial wipes in the house (Dettol style ones) so I can throw em after
Same
EmbarrassingMama · 30/08/2021 22:22

The bum germ police are out in force. The thought of reusable nappies must freak some people out no end*

*but don’t panic, I wash mine at 90 then throw out the machine.

Fruityb · 30/08/2021 22:42

That is brilliantly funny!! Throw out the machine 🤣

Honestly - mine is clean and has a freshener in it all the time. But at no point do I stick my hand in it or even panic about what the cloth touches afterward. I don’t wash the dishes with it - it just gets chucked in the machine ready for when I put a wash on. I always have tea towels and cloths sat in there ready.

stayathomer · 31/08/2021 00:57

Only on MN do people 1. not use a toilet brush; 2. throw the cloth they cleaned the toilet with away; 3. think the cloth used to clean the toilet can't be washed with other things; 4. remove the toilet seat and put it in the bath. This wins the MN weirdness award. Surely you need to burn the bath afterwards?
I hate the term 'only on MN'- nobody has the tight to sneer at other people's habits. The op asked a simple question and nearly half of the people on this thread are making incredulous, snarky comments. Most people who use toilet brushes put them back in the holder with pieces of shit and loo roll on them. That's why people don't keep them in their bathroom and instead use something old that can be sanitized and or binned afterwards. Great for all of you who have worked out a way to keep the brushes clean, but someday you'll have a visitor who has an interesting poo and uses the brush and then puts it back.

Anti bac wipes always (they're ")flushable"....and anti bac spray. Bleach and toilet duck stuff daily

Amberheartkitty · 31/08/2021 01:49

Use toilet roll and antibacterial spray for seat and rim. Bleach mostly, limescale remover when needed for bowl. I use laundry disinfectant to get things clean and sanitised.

I used to use cloths blue for loo, pink for sink. I washed all cleaning cloths separate to clothes, not because of germs I just didn’t want leftover bleach on them to fade my clothes. I have tons of cloths and use them like paper towels.

Clearly I'm not on board with this at all. I use a tea towel for this purpose. Please don't expel me from Mumsnet.

Some MNERS would boak if they had to work in healthcare settings. we put the soiled items (poo and urine into red bags and wash them in the washing machine). We also wash normal clothes in the same washing machine, if it's a hot setting it doesn't matter as all the bacteria dies anyway.

Ticklemycarpets · 31/08/2021 02:23

I use ripped up old cloth for the loo and throw it after.
When a sheet or tshirt gets too old, I just cut it up to be loo cleaning cloths.
Gives it a last bit of use before going in the bin.

I was thinking similar - I hope none of you, or someone you care for suffers incontinence. And I bet many have pets with their bare bumholes all round the house!

hocusspocuss · 31/08/2021 13:19

I cannot recommend the whooshy powder stuff enough. Foamy cleanness.

icelollycraving · 31/08/2021 15:09

Oooh! What whooshy powder stuff? I love a new cleaning product!

Pinkbrush · 31/08/2021 15:49

I hope all of you saying you wash it with other stuff are joking Shock this is why i never use tea towels/hand towels at other people’s homes!

I spray with disinfectant then wipe with toilet roll/toilet tissue (then flush it) or kitchen roll/wipes and bin them.

WeAreTheHeroes · 31/08/2021 16:25

Why would I be joking? All towels and cloths are washed at 60 degrees. What exactly do you think you'll catch from them after that? I find it revolting that so many people don't have separate hand and tea towels in the kitchen and just use one towel for everything or when people share bath towels.

What are you babbling on about woman. There is a cycle for these things. Starts out clean. Use it to dry the dishes. Use it to wipe down kitchen surfaces. Wipe up any spills off the floor. Wipe down the toilet. Put it in the wash. Repeat.

Our household seems to have avoided bubonic plague so far.

rosesarered321 · 31/08/2021 16:50

I do all cleaning clothes, floor mop heads, dish cloths and tea towels at 60 on a long wash once a week.

SirVixofVixHall · 31/08/2021 16:51

@Augusta1

I use spray and toilet paper for the seat, under the seat and rim, then use the toilet brush to give everything else a good scrub.
Same. But cloths used for dirty jobs generally go in a hot wash with some eco bleach powder.
Fruityb · 31/08/2021 19:22

God I wash anything with anything

user1487194234 · 31/08/2021 20:31

Really don't understand why the cloths can't go into the washing machine on a hot wash

I have a toilet brush like the one pictured here, they're not hard to clean? Are you telling me that if someone came and left an 'interesting poo' in the toilet that you'd clean it off with your hands? Even with gloves that's disgusting
How do you wash the cloth you clean the loo with?
Lillypup · 31/08/2021 21:01

@legalseagull

Only on MN do people actually worry about this. I've read about people not washing their knickers with tea towels lest bum germs get on their spoons
Whaaattt😱

😂😂😂😂

WhyOhWhyOhWhyyyy · 31/08/2021 21:02

When I find myself reading threads like this I realise I have had enough mumsnet for the day

BeckyWithTheGoodHair5629456 · 31/08/2021 21:05

@MountainAshley

Hang it out on the line because the sun will bleach it enough, then pop it back in the drawer with the other dishcloths.
Hopefully you wash them in the machine before you hang them on the line.... the sun won't bleach toilet germs off a dirty cloth. Yuk.

I just throw dirty cleaning cloths in the washing machine with everything else. This has never occurred to me. Hmm

BeckyWithTheGoodHair5629456 · 31/08/2021 21:10

I'm horrified at all the posters throwing away the cloth after they've used it. Not even going there with the environmental aspect, aside from that, what a fucking waste of money! Must have more money than sense.

Chocolatebuttercream · 31/08/2021 21:11

I now don't use any disposable wipes- so no baby wipes or cleaning wipes or kitchen roll (we do still use loo roll on adult bums which i realise is hypocritical but I haven't got my head round family cloth yet). We use cloth nappies too so anything used for cleaning dirty places goes on fpr a long hot wash 60 along with the cloth nappies, cloth baby wipes, and tea towels, towels etc. I don't have separate cloths for bathroom and kitchen- they all go back in the drawer because I'm confident they are clean having been washed at 60. We also use the baby wipes on bums, hands and faces, and no one has got sick. There is really no need at all for disposal wipes or for binning perfectly good cloths after contact with the loo.
