How do you wash the cloth you clean the loo with?

I clean the seat and rim with a cloth. But then what do you do with that? It feels wrong to chuck it in with tea towels but then washing it on its own also feels wasteful. I don’t really want to use disposables as I’m trying to cut down on single use items. What’s the answer?

@AliMonkey

I can see the toilet roll would work with seat and rim but don’t you also do below the water line and it won’t work there? I’m afraid it’s the one thing I use disposable j cloths for unless I’m about to put on a suitable wash as otherwise I don’t want the cloth hanging around dirty but is too wet anyway to put into basket with other dirty washing.
Why are you cleaning it below the waterline, that’s unnecessary surely? Are you scrubbing the u bend with a j cloth, I’m confused
DustyMaiden · 29/08/2021 23:51

I remove the seat put it in the bath and spray it with bathroom cleaner. Rinse with hot water.
Clean the toilet with paper.
I use one of the duck things but only put a pad of toilet tissue in it, don’t buy refills.

@Hercisback

People put their hand in the bowl?

I just use the brush and some bleach.

Every day is an education on MN.

Isn't it just. Loo brush and cleaning stuff inside the toilet. Cloth on the seat and lid. Which is then washed (not separately).

At school we swabbed lots of items and then used a petri dish to see what grew. We expected the loo swabs to grow all kinds of stuff. How wrong were we? Virtually nothing on the loo petri dishes; the swabs from coins however..

Cynderella · 29/08/2021 23:53

You're going to wash it in water hotter than your hands can stand. You'll use a detergent. We worry too much.

You actually unscrew the toilet seat and put it in the bath? No, surely not Grin
ididitsocanyou · 29/08/2021 23:57

Toilet cloths are red in my house. I then save them up in a carrier bag until I have five or so and then wash them in machine at 90. I know it seems excessive, but don’t know what rise to do.

KurtWilde · 30/08/2021 00:02

@legalseagull

Only on MN do people actually worry about this. I've read about people not washing their knickers with tea towels lest bum germs get on their spoons
Bum germs 🤣🤣

@ThatSunnyCorner
It has a quick release button just pops on and off.

Thewiseoneincognito · 30/08/2021 00:09

Clean it!?

Erm. By throwing it in the bin immediately after use?

Do you do the same with your knickers? They’re as close to your bum as the toilet is Confused

I think we've been encouraged to become squeamish to profit big business. No need to bin nappies, cloths etc - not judging people who use disposable cloths and nappies. Modern detergents, washing machines and hot water are more than enough if you want to avoid disposables.
Boatonthehorizon · 30/08/2021 00:24

For the loo I use disposable wipes or loo roll and bleach spray.
I clean the rest of the bathroom with a (not used for washing up but bought as a washing up) sponge. Sponge gets bleached and rinsed and put back on top shelf next to bleach. Replaced quite regularly.

PickAChew · 30/08/2021 00:25

The toilet (and anything shit encrusted) is the one thing I use disposable cloths on, routinely.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 30/08/2021 00:26

Yes I put my hand in the toilet - with rubber gloves on. I clean the toilet with a cloth, above and below the water line, shock horror, and then put it in the washing machine, which gets everything clean. I don't have a toilet brush as I can't put that in my washing machine. Only on MN do people fret about stuff like this. No one has been ill or died in this house after 25 years of cleaning toilets this way.

BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 30/08/2021 00:27

Why wouldn't you wash it with tea towels? Or bath towels? The while point of washing it is to clean it - it all comes out clean regardless of what you wash it with.

100% agree. Using disposables to clean toilets is ridiculous and unnecessary. Humans consuming excessive resources in this way is part of the reason the planet is fucked.

Once you’ve scrubbed the shitter and put the cloth in the washing machine, where do the rubber gloves go?
AlwaysLatte · 30/08/2021 02:33

I don't, I use kitchen roll or toilet paper, for the reason that I wouldn't want to reuse it.

User56439876 · 30/08/2021 05:46

I use a Dettol wipe and throw it in the bin mainly or an old much used cloth and throw away occasionally

User56439876 · 30/08/2021 05:52

People have been using them to clean their shopping and Amazon deliveries and wipe all round the house, the wipes were all sold out last year as so many were using them while people are doing this and they are being sold I will use them to clean my toilet.

WeAreTheHeroes · 30/08/2021 06:04

Only on MN do people 1. not use a toilet brush; 2. throw the cloth they cleaned the toilet with away; 3. think the cloth used to clean the toilet can't be washed with other things; 4. remove the toilet seat and put it in the bath. This wins the MN weirdness award. Surely you need to burn the bath afterwards?

HollyGrail · 30/08/2021 06:04

I presume everyone scrubs hands and nails with disinfectant and air dries them every time they wipe their bum. Air drying the scrubber in an area not accessed by other people.

Rubyflint · 30/08/2021 06:52

Cloths in bleach or disinfectant after use. Line dry or store behind the loo until next time. Replace when required.

LaBellina · 30/08/2021 06:58

I just use toilet paper and a spray bottle with toilet cleaning detergent to clean the loo.
I use a disposable floor wipe to clean the floor.

Greencharge · 30/08/2021 07:00
