Not sure where to put this - weighted blanket

Hekatestorch · 15/08/2021 20:09

DS is ND.

We feel a weighted blanket would be good for him to help him sleep. However, I have read you have to get ones that suit their weight.

Which is fine, but the ones the suit his weight are only small. He won't use a quilt and this, its to replace the quilt.

But I also don't want to get him one that's too heavy. He weighs about 25kg.

Am I missing something, are they not to sleep with? Or meant to go on top of a quilt?

He loves very velvety or fluffy blankets. But I can't find any that are thick enough. Instead of the weight blanket.

If anyone can help or knows about them, please can you recommend a place to get them?

DD has one and it's made a big difference to helping her fall asleep.
No more than 10% of their bodyweight.
She has a sheet under it and it comes with a cover which can be removed and washed. Cover has ties in the corners to keep it in place.
I think I bought it from Etsy.

sohypnotic · 15/08/2021 21:28

I recently purchased one of these for my DD(4), they are not heavy, but as it's a complete tube sheet is replicates the cuddle/pressure like feel you get with a weighted blanket. She can get in and out, and roll around to her hearts desire without ever losing all her covers. She usually uses a duvet on-top, unless it's very hot. I think it has improved her sleep, and she likes it.

My DDs love their Teddy fleece bedding and sheets in winter, but I see it's the duvet thats the issue. This one looks thicker than normal

I had an African blanket that I got in Kenya which was cosy and warm, was gutted when it got lost in a move!

I sleep with a teddy fleece duvet under a weighted blanket. I have a very heavy weighted blanket; if I sleep under that alone it cuts off my blood supply and makes my legs ache. The duvet spreads the weight more evenly and makes it lovely to sleep under.

My 11yo DS sleeps under a gravity blanket that is 10% of his body weight. It has really improved his sleep.

If you went for a light (2kg?) weighted blanket over a teddy fleece duvet- that might be the combination you are looking for.

Alternatively, you could try a weighted teddy. There is a whale that is big and a couple of kg I think.

weighted whale

Indecisivelurcher · 15/08/2021 22:01

This might not be heavy or big enough but this is the one my Dd age 6 has. Its fleece on one side, shiney on the other, she flips it depending on the weather. She is using it instead of a duvet at the mo, she has a sheet to pull over the top if she wants. In the winter she has a duvet to pull up over the top if she wants. She does sleep better for having it, definitely.

Teddy duvet sets are your best option. Depending on how often you change them , you could put the duvet or another blanket in and lightly sow the corners so they don't bunch up.

Another alternative would be , if you have any foreign (asian, turkish, EE etc) homeware shops nearby they normally have massive plush blankets that tend to be quite heavy. No idea if it's because of the material,or sheer size of them. They're also quite velvety/ soft toy feel. DS could probably have a feel for them in the shop. The designs might be a bit .... overwhelming though. Grin

@autumnboys

M&S now make quilts with a permanent cover on them - you wash the whole thing. Just thinking about his problem with the duvet moving inside the cover.

My autistic 11yo has a weighted blanket. He doesn’t use it all the time but it is useful when he’s restless.

Ah thats similar to what we have had when we have been I the US and he did sleep well then. Definitely worth a try!

Why not just have a duvet without a cover? Or get him a duvet for a bigger bed - if he’s in a single, get a double duvet. The weight of it over the sides of the bed will hold it in place better.

Would a fleece thermal throw be of use? It is designed for.camping. I have one, it is very cosy and warm.

Link is long. If it doesn't work, it's a Milestone Thermal Fleece.
www.amazon.co.uk/Milestone-Camping-Outdoor-available-Charcoal/dp/B012TKIZV4/ref=asc_df_B012TKIZV4/?hvlocphy=9046243&linkCode=df0&hvptwo&psc=1&hvnetw=g&hvadid=205188093108&hvpone&hvlocint&hvpos&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl&hvqmt&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&hvtargid=pla-389516159467&hvrand=601702065937107354

You can also get fleece sleeping bag liners, which is like an envelope of fleece soft goodness. Look for Milestone Fleece Sleeping Bag Liner

Oh wow. I didn't see all the responses. You are all so kind taking time to answer. Thank you for all your suggestions. He is currently asleep under my double duvet, that I folded so it's doubled up. But then he has to have a fan blowing on his face, because he is warm.

I will unfold it shortly. When I get in bed with him. Hopefully he stays asleep. He is exhausted, so fingers crossed.

But you have all been so kind. Me, dp and ds will go through all the suggestions in morning.

Again he doesn't like the feel. It's so frustrating. He is so much better, when he sleeps. But he is so particular

@ParityJ that one might be a winner. It looks thick and fairly weighty without being a weighted blanket.

If you can do a straight seam on a sewing machine (or a friend can) then I suggest a dunelm teddy blanket. Buy a double or king, fold in half and sew the three open edges open and then along the fold to make a smaller one? Then you have a slightly weightier item without the danger of a weighted blanket. The teddy blankets are super fluffy and wash and dry quickly.

50ShadesOfCatholic · 15/08/2021 22:58

My son was 50kg when I got him a 7kg blanket so according to the thread, the blanket was too heavy. However it worked like a charm. He slept very poorly until the magic blanket arrived to transform our lives. He stopped using it after 3 years and still sleeps soundly.

morepatiencerequired · 15/08/2021 22:58

Our weighted blanket has a cover which is velvety on one side and tied into the cover in a load of places so it doesn't bunch up. My son particularly likes soft and fluffy things. It's an arse to wash the cover tho as there are so many ties! If you have no luck, PM me and I'll find where I bought it (online purchase as I'm in an ill equipped country for these types of things, but was probably from the uk)

Super fluffy sound great.

Thank you. I have an appointment with his OT and his physio in the next few weeks. Probably worth mentioning to them see what they say.

Sleep won't solve all his issues, but he is so much better when he doesn't sleep. I am dreading school returning, he is awful to get there if he hasn't slept.

I have this fleece weighted blanket. As you can see they come in different weights.
I love mine! Also very inexpensive Smile

nonotmenotI · 16/08/2021 00:13

He would be fine to sleep under it due to his age. At 25kg, I would say a 3-4kg weighted blanket would work for him. Sometimes you can get them in home bargains but you might be better looking for one made so it can get re weighted as he gets older.

My son has one he's slept under for the last 2 years - it's 4kgs and is fleece on one side and design of his choice on the other. He sleeps with duvet and this.

Jessicabrassica · 16/08/2021 00:27

The issue with spending all night under them is that you get used to the pressure and when that level of proprioceptive input feels normal, you need a heavier one. There have been, historically, small children with blankets so heavy they couldn't get out from underneath them and they suffocated.

There is lots of anecdotal evidence which suggests that some people find weighted blankets helpful for sleep/ regulation.
With ds I have stretched a fleece blanket tightly across his bed and tucked it under the mattress. Some nights it has helped. Other nights it hasn't!

Smurf123 · 16/08/2021 00:47

Check out fidgetbum it might help it's like a stretchy sheet you put under the mattress and then it zips up over the top of duvet/ blanket (or child can just sleep under it on its own) but it might work for your ds on top of a fluffy fleecy blanket as it would then give the compression tight squeeze feeling too?
You can get it on Amazon I think or we have a store here (NI) called learning space that I've seen them in I think they deliver uk wide, they have a website if you google it.

minipie · 16/08/2021 01:07

this on amazon?

It may fall off in the night but if he’s say 6 plus in age he could put it back on himself to get back to sleep.
