Not sure where to put this - weighted blanket

Hekatestorch · 15/08/2021 20:09

DS is ND.

We feel a weighted blanket would be good for him to help him sleep. However, I have read you have to get ones that suit their weight.

Which is fine, but the ones the suit his weight are only small. He won't use a quilt and this, its to replace the quilt.

But I also don't want to get him one that's too heavy. He weighs about 25kg.

Am I missing something, are they not to sleep with? Or meant to go on top of a quilt?

He loves very velvety or fluffy blankets. But I can't find any that are thick enough. Instead of the weight blanket.

If anyone can help or knows about them, please can you recommend a place to get them?

Occupational therapist told me not to let my son sleep under his or stay under his for more than 20 mins at a time (he falls asleep under it then I take it away) and definitely not go over the recommended weight for his weight.

Wimowehwimowehwimowehwimoweh · 15/08/2021 20:11

I assumed they were to go on top of bedding. Just because I don’t imagine it’s the sort of thing you could stick in a washing machine every week.

Lougle · 15/08/2021 20:13

When they're small it's really important that they don't fall asleep under them.

Is this any good? 2.3kg and 91×122cm

Hekatestorch · 15/08/2021 20:14

Thank you, both, that makes total sense.

I don't know what to do. He sleeps poorly. Hates a quilt with quilt covers. Loves a fluffy soft throw, but we can't find one thick enough.

He is 10 and we we up most of last night. He finally fell asleep at 6am with a thin fluffy throw over him, but then complained all day ot was too thin.

I am exhausted and probably not thinking straight. A desperate attempt at finding a solution.

Thank you for the advice though. Glad I asked now Flowers

@lougle that one seems you can sleep under it and weighs less than the ones I looked at.

Just not sure he will like the feel of it.

We got a new bed for a the dogs, they don't like it. It has a fleece inside. He made a pillow out of it, to sleep the other night because of the feel. Please not the dogs had not been near it Grin

When you say quilt, do you mean a duvet?

I was going to suggest a high tog wool duvet over a brushed cotton sheet? Wool duvets are wondrously heavy, compared to feather or synthetic fillings. (I would be a little nervous of leaving a child under a weighted blanket.)

isthismylifenow · 15/08/2021 20:24

My dd has one, but she is a teen so much older. She sleep with it over her body and then the duvet in top. But we are in winter now, so in summer it will probably just be the weighted blanket.

I am not in the UK and havent heard the advise not to use them all night for younger children.

We have a few companies that make them to order, so yes they are weighted on 7% of body weight iirc and we can choose the fabric as well. Perhaps having one made up is an option then you could pick a fleece or softer type material.

It's not an overnight thing to assist with sleep though. It took my dd 4 or 5 nights to get used to it.

But it's had been a very good investment as my dd does sleep much better with it. She suffers with major depression and anxiety so sleeping has been quite an issue.

Dunelm do the teddy throws which feel quite thick but aren't heavy. If you wanted some weight to it, could you buy an appropriate weight blanket for him, and sew it to a fluffy throw so thah he gets the benefit of both sensations

Hi thank you for that.

I did expected it wouldn't fix it overnight.

To be fair if one if the dogs sleeps on him it helps. But now it's too warm and they don't want to. Though will go to him if he is having a nightmare.

But I can't force the spaniels to sleep on him Grin

I will look for a company that makes them to order. Thank you.

One of the dogs throws would be perfect. He loves it. But it's doggy damaged. I just can't remember where I got it.

Are they quote thick? We have Dunhelm nearby I could go there tomorrow.

He problem with duvet are that he always wakes up with the duvet bunched up in the duvet cover. And gets frustrated trying to sort it. Or is rolling round trying to get covered and falls out of bed.

Am not in the uk and were actively encouraged by professionals to get DS to sleep under it.

Also melatonin is worth a try.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 15/08/2021 20:50

Would safety pinning the duvet to the cover be an option?

Now I think about it Ive seen adverts on fb for some sort of stretchy sheet which is supposed to have the same sort of effect. Cant remember what its called though.

Madeoftea · 15/08/2021 20:50

Would a teddy duvet set work? You would get the weight from a duvet but the outside would be like a fluffy throw.

Not sure. It may do. My concern would be him messing with the safety pins. He tends to hurt himself with things like scissors etc when he gets hold of them

I will look for the stretchy sheet though. Thank you

Never heard of them before tonight Blush

But they might do. Just googled teddy and saw 'Teddy throws' and, like pp said, Dunholme have them. They might be it. I think because I didn't know theyvwere called 'Teddy' so been getting the wrong items coming up.

Thank you all so much! I have some options for him.

I will take him with me to see what he thinks. Dp is sleeping downstairs tonight so he can sleep with me. See if we can all get some proper rest.

I've got a gravity blanket branded blanket. It's warm enough that I don't need any other bedding with it and the cover it comes with is fleecy. I'm an adult so can sleep under mine though.

Davina69 · 15/08/2021 21:05

My son is a similar age and I bought his from this specialist shop on eBay.

It should be ten percent of his body weight and used over a duvet. The lady that makes them on eBay is great and she has lots of fabrics and colours. My sons is navy with white stars in fleece.

Thank you. I can contact them and ask to clarify. That's really helpful

Not sure of its stress or tiredness but I can find where it's says kids don't sleep under them. Though I suspected it from the sizes

M&S now make quilts with a permanent cover on them - you wash the whole thing. Just thinking about his problem with the duvet moving inside the cover.

My autistic 11yo has a weighted blanket. He doesn’t use it all the time but it is useful when he’s restless.

Travellingraspberry · 15/08/2021 21:18

Think someone has already mentioned them but was going to say Dunelm do Teddy fleece bottom sheets and duvet/pillows sets. Hopefully the link will work

Try looking up compression sheets to begin with - they do them on Amazon. Same sort of effect but no weight?

WetWeekends · 15/08/2021 21:23

Something like this might be worth a try. I’ve been considering one for my DC.
