New dishwasher - can't fit wine glasses in

Nicklebox · 27/07/2021 14:33

I had to get a new dishwasher as our old one died. The new one has a tray at the top for cutlery, but even with the middle tray at the lowest setting i cannot fit the wine glasses in. I've broken one putting it on the lower shelf. How are other people dealing with this problem, are there any solutions? My wine glasses are not that tall and I can't even fit some of the pint glasses in. So disappointing.

We have one of these for the bottom basket:

WrongKindOfFace · 27/07/2021 18:48

Does the tray have parts that slide to the centre to make more room for taller items?

Blossomtoes · 27/07/2021 18:51

We can’t get champagne flutes in ours but it’s hardly the end of the world to wash them by hand.

BertieBotts · 27/07/2021 18:54

What the frig is the point of having a dishwasher if you still have to hand wash stuff? This would annoy me too.

It annoys me too. Mine's a Miele one with a cutlery tray, and even though the top rack moves down a bit, it's not enough to put wine glasses in (and I don't think they're particularly long stemmed!). I always put them in the bottom and so far haven't broken anyway, but it's not easy to balance them there or to get other stuff around it.

So no, obviously not a huge problem in the grand scheme of things, but yes, mildly annoying when there is room generally in the dishwasher but it's just shaped/planned badly for the things you want to put in it.

That wine glass holder thing looks interesting, though. Might investigate if it would fit in a Miele and how the glasses go in.

SaffyWall · 27/07/2021 19:09

We have the same problem and use these glasses for everyday and then hand wash the long-stemmed ones (which rarely make it out of the cupboard now).

Chunkymenrock · 27/07/2021 19:36

Or just buy smaller wine glasses!

The glass holder doesn't look as if my glasses would fit in it as they have short stumpy stems and a long tulip shaped bowl bit also its a bit expensive for me and i need the room at the bottom for all the pans and plates

Hand wash stemmed glasses. Using Duralex small glasses for everyday is the smart thing to do - they are also virtually indestructible.

MarianneUnfaithful · 27/07/2021 23:14

Eek! Bosch are doing away with cultlery baskets and the flippy side shelf?

That’s ridiculous! I haven’t got time to be slotting individual knives into their single grooves Shock. And how do you lean wine glasses up without the slots in the floppy bit?

Ridiculous. We all need to e mail Bosch.

I have moved into a house with some crappy dishwasher and was looking forward to replacing it with a Bosch in due course.

Not if they all have those top cutlery trays!

GiantKitten · 27/07/2021 23:29

Have a look at IKEA Svalka - the red wine glasses just fit on my (old) Bosch top shelf, leaning against the flippy side bit. Mine has the sensible cutlery basket in the bottom though, not the fiddly tray in the top.
They’re 18cm high.
(They also just fit on my cupboard shelf with the pint glasses etc, and they’re quite robust but still look elegant, I love them Smile)

GiantKitten · 27/07/2021 23:42

@HermioneGrunger

We stick our wine glasses in the bottom because we can't be bothered arsing around to fit them in on the drawer below the cutlery shelf.

The only way our dishes and glasswear come out perfect is bu using Fairy platinum, the old dishwasher loved Aldi own brand, this new one is a brand snob.

I use Fairy Platinum Plus now, the one with a red bit instead of a green bit, glasses come out like new every time. (Used to use Aldi bog standard but older glasses from that regime are cloudy.) Fairy PP full price is stupidly expensive but they’re half price at Ocado every other month - £16 for 105 iirc.

Umm...

In most dishwashers you can raise and lower the height of your top rack, like so...

We have a new Bosch. With a cutlery drawer. We just press the buttons in the side of the top tray and it drops down?

RampantIvy · 28/07/2021 07:17

You can't with ours. It was in the house when we moved in 18 years ago, and is still going strong. Maybe adjustable top racks are a more recent thing.

AntiWorkBrigade · 28/07/2021 07:51

I consider this thread a public service announcement - I will definitely be researching future dishwashers very carefully. There are already various things I need to hand wash, so I wouldn’t be happy with not being able to stick everyday wine glasses in either. I don’t want to drink out of tumblers, etc., either.

drspouse · 28/07/2021 07:55

Ours does that but it still doesn't leave enough of a gap for wine glasses.

EverythingDelegated · 28/07/2021 07:56

Take the tray out and buy a basket, our Bosch has a tray, you can either have the glass rack low to get the tall glasses in or high to fit the 12" dinner plates in but not both, its a PITA, the cutlery doesn't get as clean as in a basket either. You lose very little space on the bottom rack by adding a basket.

AuntieStella · 28/07/2021 08:02

I like a cutlery tray at the top

And I liked it very much with the Miele, because the rest of the layout meant I could fit everything in happily.

I do not like the rest of the interior if the Bosch, because there is so many more prongs and so much more plastic, limiting the way I can fit things in - unless they slope in ways that take up outrageous amounts of space. Kind of ruins the point of having an eco mode (that takes several centuries to run) if you have to use the machine more often to do a similar amount of stuff

User56439876 · 28/07/2021 21:04

I bought a load of La Rochere glasses as they are quite dishwasher friendly being chunky with not much stem for general use and only use normal wine glasses occasionally, they also don't seem to go cloudy, I also bought matching glass bowls. Delicate they are not though. My dishwasher also has a cutlery tray which I like and I have the top tray on the middle setting which seems to work, just.

TheFeistyFeminist · 29/07/2021 12:36

I got wine glasses with short stems from John Lewis, very good value and nice to use. Plus they fit in the dishwasher.

DufferMum · 29/07/2021 12:42

This is God’s way of telling you to ditch the demon drink, OP!

We have a flip down part at the back of the bottom tray that we rest wine glasses that don't fit in that holder on. I can usually manage to get my pans in the middle rack. I love the cutlery tray at the top, makes the bottom rack so much more flexible.
