Getting rid of overpowering air freshener smell

Help!

Someone stayed with us for a few months and have now gone, leaving a revolting sweet strawberry/rose artificial scent in the room. I've tried airing it, washing down (and even painting 2 walls) but it still stinks.

Any ideas of how to get rid of it? The window has been open for about a month but the smell is still there.

Do I need to bleach (I hate bleach) everything, even inside the cupboards to get rid of it?

Advice welcomed for anything (and everything) you've tried that works.

Thanks.

Bicarbonate of soda is great for removing smells - sprinkle on carpet leave for a while then hoover. You can make a little paste and gently clean any surfaces

have you looked behind/under/in furniture if there is a plug in or gel thingy?
have you washed soft furnishings?
