Well, here we are embarking upon part 6 of our epic journey of sorting out our homes.

We are a varied group of likeminded householders that are leading somewhat challenging lives; be that living with too much 'stuff' that we find difficult to deal with, houses that are falling apart (mine included), health issues within the family unit, wider family, or ourselves that makes sorting out our households challenging, to say the least. So...

Anyone and everyone is welcome to join us for support, adding their own ideas to help others out, storage ideas, even tips on actually getting those items out of the house which sounds so simple when you say it. Encouragement abounds here, and we do not criticise. EVER! We even try not to criticise ourselves as it's not helpful to anyone.
If you are feeling overwhelmed, don't know where to start, can't be bothered but really do want to be bothered...think you are lazy, just need to see it in print here...we'll help. We'll virtually fist bump your achievements - small or large, and virtually hug you when the need arises, and if you want a hug, just ask because we are here for you. Here for one another because we get it - the highs and the lows, the art of washing up is sometimes our great achievement of the day, but it's still an achievement.

Welcome to thread #6 of Hoarders Anonymous - Carrying On Sorting It Out

@CherryMargo I too had a sort out of my wrapping/packaging, but just before Christmas when I’d already wrapped all of the gifts. I sorted into Christmas and non/Christmas, and bought a plastic box that holds the long rolls of wrapping paper and ribbons and tags and whatnot. It’s all organised now. I also have a two gift bags full of gift bags, Christmas and non-Christmas. And a separate box of ‘packaging eg Jiffy bags, bubble wrap, those thick plastic bags that can be used to post packages.

It sounds insane to have so much packaging/wrapping and it probably is. But I hate waste (partly how I got to where I now am) and at least it is organised. I have enough greetings cards for the year.

I am loving how much this thread is keeping me going. Thank you!

WellTidy · 10/01/2022 12:01

I gave myself this morning to do as much as I could and then stop, so now I’ve stopped. I’ve done ok - three bags for life of clothes that my youngest won’t wear (sensory issues) to go to my SIL on Friday, three bags of old school uniform advertised on my local free Facebook page (one being collected this afternoon) and three pairs of my eldest’s old sports shoes also advertised for free on that group.

So nothing actually out of the house as yet, but more on its way out than it was first thing this morning.

I cleaned the fridge yesterday evening. Thanks for the huge to do that. Oven is also on the list but that can wait a bit longer, not that it should, but it will Smile

Miaowse · 10/01/2022 18:21

That’s fantastic progress WellTidy! When you are next changing your oven I can heartily recommend getting one with a pyrolytic setting.

So envious of your box for wrapping paraphernalia - it seems like the height of organisation.

Christmas tree is now safely packed away (not by me!). I’ve borrowed another book about minimalism/decluttering from the library.

SingToTheSky · 10/01/2022 19:22

Evening all!
I am still suffering a bit from the booster unfortunately, although the pain has mostly gone so it’s just the tachycardia and breathlessness Hmm. Am feeling a lot better mentally though so trying to capitalise on that without overdoing it. Been trying to gradually sort through boxes of random crap - I’ve come to accept that while we still have those, life will always be chaotic no matter what - because everything is a jumble. So I’m not going to try and figure out things like housework schedules and organisation tricks until I’ve got rid of much more stuff and determined at least vaguely where the remaining stuff is being kept in the house. I think, in our case and with the way life is for us, anything else is just a sticking plaster at this point.

There are a lot of categories that we don’t really have a surplus of anymore, either due to already tackling the hoard (eg books) or just not being interested in them in the first place (eg my clothes). But other categories cause the chaos. I’d say the worst is toys and games. A combination of having three kids with 2 and then 7 year gaps with lots of interests, and my own special interest of games and home ed/learning toys means we have a lot. Eg my littlest is keen on letters/numbers so of course I get excited about that and find even more related resources… the older two really benefited from hands on stuff and she looks to be the same, but things like letter magnets and beads are a messy family’s kryptonite 😳

I was sensible this Christmas though and focused on little presents that added to things she already has rather than creating yet another category. That worked really well I think. I’ve also decided a few things that she has outgrown or that are not that great.

Last night I FINALLY started painting a wooden mini chest of drawers which will be for all our pens, pencils etc. It was part of an Ikea order months and months ago 😳 going to finish it tonight when the little one is in bed, and then the older two can sort the massive pen box into category drawers tomorrow. It’ll be so nice to get that done - the box has been in taking up floor space in our room for months and we end up scrabbling around for a working biro almost daily (because if we had the big box downstairs the little one would have a field day!).

We are so disorganised in so many ways 😳 sorry for the epic waffle. It is improving anyway, feeling positive and determined if somewhat embarrassed at the way our house currently is!

WellTidy · 10/01/2022 19:41

@SingToTheSky it’s taken me years to have the time and energy to be able to start organising all that we have. I have had bursts in the past but I have been unable to keep going with it, as I’ve been so pulled in other directions. Until now it has only got worse, so anything to stay neutral is a good thing.

@Miaowse the wrapping/packaging organisation is a thing of beauty! I am really chuffed with it. I had the bright idea today to keep a scissors and roll of sellotape in there too so that it really is self contained. There are two little trays on top of the part that has space for the rolls Useful Storage Box 22 Litre Clear

WellTidy · 10/01/2022 19:42

Sorry - link here

Miaowse · 10/01/2022 20:29

Ooh yes, that’s the same one I’ve been eyeing up for years.

Miaowse · 10/01/2022 22:14

On the top of my microwave (which was almost entirely clear a few weeks ago) I can see:

  • bottle of body spray (Christmas gift, but I opened it and do not like the scent so what can I do with it?)
Donate/bin/put away?
  • empty envelope from a Christmas card (kept because I want to make a note of the address on the back, i.e. deferred decision/action, I have just taken a photo and recycled the envelope which took me 20 seconds)
Recycle
  • paperback thriller (received as gift but it’s not my type of novel - I’ll probably read it then donate)
Put away/Donate
  • Box of optrex (belongs either in a cupboard or upstairs)
Put away
  • Portable speaker (no idea - need to ask husband, probably keeping)
Put away ?
  • box of LFTs (should go upstairs)
Put away
  • measuring tape (should go back in a drawer
Put away
  • plastic toy
Would like to donate, but it has to be a put away for now
  • packing slip from a Christmas present
Recycle
  • Top Trumps advert
Recycle
  • Tag from a jumper (plastic)
Bin
  • Tag x2 (paper)
Recycle
  • plastic packaging
Bin
  • 4 Christmas cards for child from classmates (tempted to keep but we’d probably never look at them again so…)
Recycle/bin
  • packet of chewing gum
Put away
  • Pen
Put away
  • Gloves
Put away
  • Box of tissues
Put in its usual home
  • novelty pen still in packet
Put away for now, but may be able to donate in future
  • gardening gloves
Put away
  • School photos
Put away
  • lipstick
Put away
  • credit card bill
Put away

I have now taken all the actions and the top of the microwave is clear again. The problem with the put away categories is that most of these don’t have a proper home so the stuff just gets shuffled around; my recently cleared desk now has a new pile of stuff. How to stop churning?

When I did this a few weeks ago there was much more random stuff like single screws, dead batteries, spare change, cutlery, bills, letters, halloween sweets etc.

What would you do with this stuff? Would more get discarded or would more get kept?

I found this quite useful - does anyone else want to have a go?

WellTidy · 10/01/2022 22:26

@Miaowse good tackling! Im sure it looks loads better, but I sympathise with the moving things around. I suppose you either need better storage or less of the things that would need to be stored. I dont have the problem of lots of itty bitty stuff on surfaces. On first sight, our house looks quite tidy. Anyone coming here would think we were fairly organised, not amazingly so, but there isn’t piles of bits or stuff anywhere.

My problems are go deeper. Everything is in bags hanging around or cupboards or behind closed doors. We simply have masses of stuff. Too many things. The cupboards are bursting. I need to go through them all and get rid of so much and organise what is left.

I’ve been putting off doing the kitchen cupboards as there is so much in them. For example we have about ten egg cups. Only DH and Dc1 like boiled eggs. And we are hardly likely to have eight visitors who will all want a boiled egg at the same time!

BlackeyedSusan · 10/01/2022 22:35

well done miaowse... loads of decisions there.

I was going to say I have done sod all...

but I spent the first two hours up as a boy was not sleeping. then an hour calming down.
boy up, gicven breakfast, clothes and chivvied to get dressed.
two taken to school
caught up on sleep. (i will be nicer because of it)
negotiated where ds will go after school. (dad's)
collected dd from her dad's and took her to volunteering. negotiated where she will have tea. contacted leader to check it is still ok to volunteer. co-ordinated collection with ex.
topped up dinner money account.

Miaowse · 10/01/2022 22:38

It’s so interesting, I love reading about other people’s things. I own (or perhaps used to own?) just one egg cup which I painted at a baby shower at a ceramics place, but it’s possible I already got rid of that. I have never used it and it’s been in a cupboard for over a decade so if I stumble across it I’m going to let it go. On the other hand, a random bit of plastic from my desk I’ll hang onto because I’m not sure what it is and it might be important/useful.

BlackeyedSusan · 10/01/2022 22:50

put ds's washing away
sympathised over cancelled football
checked charge on phone and topped up.
topping up power bank charge.

Miaowse · 10/01/2022 22:54

Well done on all that emotional work you’ve been doing with the children Susan. It’s quite exhausting trying to keep everyone’s needs met.

Solo did you enjoy your lovely clean bathroom sink today?

I tried a new recipe this evening to use up leftovers and it was both really easy and really delicious so I will definitely make it again.

BlackeyedSusan · 10/01/2022 23:07

it's odd what we hang onto and what we throw out.

yay to the recipe. I am haivng a open fridge and eat what needs using up day. as it is just me it does not need to make a proper meal as loing as I have had a bit of everything needed.

I am back to pre Christmas weight even though I am still eating up left overs and treats. trying to cut back on the carbns but today was not a good day for that. tiredness requires caffeine and sugar.

;when I have a day where I feel I have done nothing, I need to thiink about the stuff I have done.

DownUdderer · 11/01/2022 05:38

I washed some towels yesterday, they'd been in a plastic bag after we'd been to the beach and they'd been overlooked. They'd been overlooked for a week or so. Anyway they're clean now. I also washed a small load of bits, some swimsuits etc.

I'm not on top of things this week. I find it much more difficult to get on top of things while my kids are on their summer holidays.

CherryMargo · 11/01/2022 18:29

@WellTidy thanks a lot for the link! 🙏 I need to get something like this once I use up more items from my packaging/wrapping stash.

“My problems go deeper. Everything is in bags hanging around or cupboards or behind closed doors. We simply have masses of stuff. Too many things. The cupboards are bursting. I need to go through them all and get rid of so much and organise what is left”.

Here it used to be exactly the same. Most of my hoard used to hide inside my wardrobe, my cupboards, under the bed, under the stairs and in the loft. For years it was tucked away so well that it was actually counterproductive – not having my hoard stare at me 24/7 made it feel like I didn’t have a problem. The first lockdown and the ‘ban’ on having visitors was the time when I finally decided to reveal my deep buried secret… only to my immediate family, but I must say it was still quite an experience.

As a result, I divided my flat into sections, and assigned particular categories of items to each one. For example, one pile of boxes would be full of books and magazines, another one would have all of my films and music CDs, and they would sit in my living room. Similarly, all of my makeup and skincare backups would be stored in the boxes under the stairs where it is cold, dark and dry, and so on.

Nowadays if I come across something that is in the wrong pile/box, I try to put it immediately where it belongs. It doesn’t reduce the size of the hoard but at least helps me navigate through my flat, and find things relatively quickly.

Then, when I have time and energy, I tackle stash by stash (not room by room), and my approach is as follows:

  • at first, I declutter or use up/wear out (I usually end up using up/wearing out as most of my stuff is unsuitable for donation/sale, and I really struggle to just bin my items);
  • then I organise/tidy up the rest of the stash;
  • then I introduce routines to keep it tidy/organised.

As for the actual rooms, so far, I’ve only deep cleaned my kitchen. It contained several stashes (food and drink stash, kitchenware stash, detergent stash, etc.) which I had either used up or organised prior to that. My kitchen cleaning routine has since been established, and it helps me maintain the achieved progress.

I also got my beauty and clothes stashes fully organised and under control but the zones where I store them are still work in progress. Other stashes and zones are patiently waiting for their turn. I am also on a replacement-only no-buy at the moment trying to use up and wear out as many of my items as possible before bringing something new in.

@Miaowse I loved your ‘decision-action’ exercise, and will do the same with my desk on Sunday!

@SingToTheSky get well soon! Flowers

Miaowse · 12/01/2022 00:04

I suppose you either need better storage or less of the things that would need to be stored

It is most definitely the latter for me WellTidy

There are a very small number of categories where having better storage would really help me. Overall, dramatically reducing holdings would make a huge difference. That adage “you can’t organise clutter” is apposite in my case though I haven’t yet absorbed that lesson…

WellTidy · 12/01/2022 10:01

Less of absolutely everything has to be my starting point too. For example I have in my list ‘clean handbags’ - they’re leather and are looking really shabby. I bought a leather cleaner about three years ago that I didn’t even open. But rather than clean, say, the 10+ bags that I have, it would be better if I donated six of them and cleaned the 4+ remaining and then actually used them. And found homes for just four as I don’t really have the space to organise storing ten handbags in.

I cleaned the oven yesterday. I bought one of the packs in Lakeland that you can do the shelves and oven which made it easier.

Been to the supermarket today, and now taking the soft plastics and textiles recycling to the drop off points. And going to the shop to get what I forgot to buy despite having a list in my hand.

That’s it then on the house front for today. I don’t want to lose momentum but I’m also conscious that I’m patting myself on the back a bit too much which in the past has meant that I then stop doing anything more.

SingToTheSky · 12/01/2022 10:55

Yep definitely less stuff needed here too. Arguably there are a few categories that I can’t really reduce much further but overall yes.

DownUdderer · 13/01/2022 03:46

I've put a load of laundry on today. I'm really not on top of anything just at the moment. I'm relieved to just manage a little bit of laundry.

My husband forget to take the bin out this week. So we've booked a council clean-up for the 26th. We can put out bulky items and the council take them away. But it's pretty good, they will take quite a bit. So we'll be glad of it. It's good we were forced into thinking of a solution to a full bin. We'd been procrastinating about booking our clean-up. We'll get rid of lots of card boxes and an old washing line. Our garage is like a disaster zone, so anything going out of the garage is good.

WellTidy · 13/01/2022 10:32

There are always productive and non-productive days and weeks. We all go through this, I am fortunately in a productive phase right now but it genuinely has taken years to get to this point and I’m just hoping it lasts a while longer. Please be kind to yourself Down.

I’ve dropped another bag of old school uniform off at the textiles recycling point (things that nobody wanted on the local free Facebook group). I’ve also bought a suitable bin for my soft plastics recycling, to put next to the kitchen him. I’m hoping that this means everyone will remember to recycle their soft plastics rather than put them in the default kitchen bin. One of my new year plans was to really get on top of the recycling and put less in landfill and I’m doing ok so far.

Also remembered to put all of the paper and cardboard out for kerbside collection this morning. I normally forget some boxes or whatever, but it’s all gone out so that makes the recycling look much tidier.

Some admin to do this afternoon to get things off my to do list.

I’m putting off tackling the attic. It’s a massive and messy job and I’m wondering whether to get a small skip for a week. We moved into this house 11 years ago and some things have been there untouched since then. It’s not one for today. Maybe next week. Maybe.

Miaowse · 15/01/2022 14:55

I need to take inspiration from WellTidy and sort out my ever growing recycling mountains.

I really like your approach of gathering together like with like over time, Cherry. Maybe the cardboard box mountain in my kitchen could be used to corral categories of things ahead of pruning the numbers.

This week has been pretty unproductive from a house-sorting perspective, but I’ve made quite a lot of headway on my huge to do list in my day job. I did also find time to make a big pot of pasta sauce for the freezer so my future self will be very happy about that.

The laundry has really built up again but I will clear the bulk of it over the weekend. I plan to deal with another cluttered surface in the kitchen and will probably create a post for that as it really helped me for the microwave because it meant I properly considered every item.

Keep on keeping on. I’m trying my best to remember that everything - no matter how small - makes a difference, even if it’s just throwing out one thing or putting one thing back where it belongs. I stumbled on an old picture and my spare bedroom is much much less cluttered than it was a few years ago so that was quite a boost.

Miaowse · 15/01/2022 15:40

Since my last post I’ve gathered dirty laundry and put on a wash, folded some dry laundry, put a few things back in cupboards to clear space on the worktop, decanted two carrier bags of recycling into the outside bin, moved the recycling that was on the floor into one of the now-empty carrier bags, threw away a coat hanger that’s been on the kitchen floor for weeks, put all the dirty crockery in the dishwasher (why do we put this in the sink or the work surfaces rather than straight in the dishwasher??), made lunch.

Next: make coffee, eat lunch, put away some folded dry laundry, and read more of my latest decluttering book (The Holistic Guide to Decluttering). I don’t think it is aimed at people with a lot of clutter, but there have been some useful ideas/quotes.

DownUdderer · 17/01/2022 09:13

I washed a large duvet today, I hope it dries. It was a hot day today (in Australia) but I didn't wash it until the afternoon because I procrastinated. Anyway fingers crossed it dries!

I scrubbed out the bathtub. I scrubbed the shower. I cleaned the bathroom sink.

I did some laundry.

Small steps. I agree that anything that gets done, is good, it can be cumulative.

I also returned some shoes via the post office.

SingToTheSky · 17/01/2022 11:30

Definitely small steps here too. I managed to make some decent progress yesterday just very slowly going through some boxes. Lots of little bits and pieces in the bin/recycling and found a few bits to sell too.
