I am thinking of getting rid of my tv. I never watch it anymore and anything I want to watch is on catch up on my laptop. I have not even switched on my television for three years but have kept it because I feel it is the normal thing to have a tv.

Does anyone else only watch things online? I only watch a couple of regular programmes anyway and I get them from the itv catch up.. I get new from the BBC news website and watch ilms on amazon prime

I was going to say that I do have a TV now, but I did have a couple of years when I was young when I didn't have one - mind, that was in the days before laptops / internet / streaming services home computers, so, by 'not having a TV' I couldn't watch anything.

Personally I wouldn't want to be without a TV, as, when I'm watching TV, I'll have my laptop open and be MNing, or searching Rightmove, or on FB, or checking my e-mails etc. I don't like watching things on my laptop as I thn can't do anything else at the same time.

However - you've literally said you have not even switched your TV on for three years, so I can't see ANY reason why you would keep one, if you never watch it.

LonstantonSpiceMuseum · 08/05/2021 23:38

I've not had one for a decade! Same as you,I do most things on my laptop or phone.
It's inconvenient, but I think it's a good thing else I could be Infront of it all day.
Only thing I miss is being able to another to infringe of a movie, the sneak lake screen just doesn't quite cut it but it's not that bad to Frank with.
I say go for it!

I haven’t had a TV for years, just use my phone/laptop.

Flute56 · 08/05/2021 23:48

I tend to watch a lot of things on youtube. I also have itv hub and bbc i player if I want to wat anything that is currently on television. All the channels on tv can be found online. I also live in a flat with a very close opposite neigbour an my neighbour goes to bed very early and I dont so she would be able to hear my television so when I watch things on my laptop I wear headphones I am a big Coronation Street fan and that is always put on the itv hub and I watch it on that rather than the tv. The other advantage is that it is not always convenient to watch things as they are broadcast so I will watch on the cath up hub at a later time or day and that suits me and my lifestyle better. Many years ago beore the days of the catch up hubs et you would have to record the shows from the tv through a video recorder but now with modern technology you dont hae to. Who even reords stuff anyway even on a dvd recorder? It is so old fashioned and I do not know anyone who still has a dvd player anyway attached to their tv. Netflix and Amazon Prime have overtaen and you dont even need to go out and buy a dvd anymore

We don't - we just use BBC iplayer etc so wouldn't use a TV if we had one.

RoseMartha · 09/05/2021 00:15

I could probably manage without one. When dc have left home. Using the tablet instead .

The teens hog the tv and I usually delete most stuff I have recorded for myself because I dont get time to watch it. Sometimes watch tv if I am home alone doing ironing.

Then watch something in the evenings in bed on the tablet occasionally.

MarthaHanson · 09/05/2021 00:29

I haven’t had one for over a decade. DH and I use our laptops for Netflix/prime/iplayer and when we watch a film/an episode of something as a family we project it.

Flute56 · 09/05/2021 00:34

shops like Currys are still selling tvs even 40 inch screens so there must be a demand for them for some people

I havent had a tv for about 3 years , like PP I use my laptop if I want to watch something in particular but even then I dont use it much for that .
I tend to find one series that I like and watch then watch it from start to end over a month or so ( watching Arrow on prime atm)

Hawkins001 · 09/05/2021 00:49

Mine is through ps4 with YouTube, not watched actual tv in ages, only if it's on at friends ect.

Flute56 · 09/05/2021 00:51

I watch Corronation Street on my laptop on the itv hub

Never had one.
TVs are fugly and would wreck the esthetic of my living room. I'll desist until they make one in driftwood and hand-blown glass...
We keep one laptop on the living room coffee table and it is used for iPlayer or Netflix if someone wants to watch something. If we all want to watch something together (family of 4), we literally pile in on top of each other on the sofa and watch Grin Occasionally I get the projector out, if the DC have friends over for a movie, and just screen on the wall.
Ours is a small semi, but people have still asked me where our "TV room" is when visiting.

Skinnytailedsquirrel · 09/05/2021 00:54

I dinnae hae a TV

MyDcAreMarvel · 09/05/2021 00:58

I would hate watching things on a laptop as a regular thing. Far too small a screen especially for films. If I was a student in uni accommodation it would be ok. Also your head would be at an uncomfortable angle.

H2OConnoisseur · 09/05/2021 01:00

The only reason I still have a tv is so I can watch Netflix on a massive screen while snuggled up on the sofa.

The small screen has never bothered me. As for being in an uncomfortable angle. I usually watch my laptop in bed with it on my lap. Easy Peasy

I use mine to stream yoga classes, and that’s about it. I can’t see what they’re doing on my laptop!

Gwenhwyfar · 09/05/2021 01:30

I haven't had one for many years. I use my laptop.

Gwenhwyfar · 09/05/2021 01:31

"Also your head would be at an uncomfortable angle."

Not really.
The screen is not too small either. It is a bit if I have visitors, but I usually watch alone.

Flute56 · 09/05/2021 04:32

i am convinced now. I did not realise many other people did not like an actual tv either.

I haven't had a TV for more than 20 years, OP. When we go on holiday I sometimes turn it on out of curiousity, but it hasn't ever proved interesting enough to go and get one.

MinesAPintOfTea · 09/05/2021 10:59

When our tv broke 5 years ago we put a projector screen up and bought a basic projector. Cinema-style watching when I want to stream something. Just a shelf on the wall above the sofa when we’re not, so the lounge isn’t focused for screen time

wanderedlonelyasacloud · 09/05/2021 11:04

We have a smart tv but we dont have an aerial, we just stream netflix/amazon prime/itv catch up etc on it.

I personally wouldnt get rid of the actual tv as we like having a large screen to stream on, but we only have one (which is in the living room) and that's it, no tv in the bedroom or kitchen etc.
