I am thinking of getting rid of my tv. I never watch it anymore and anything I want to watch is on catch up on my laptop. I have not even switched on my television for three years but have kept it because I feel it is the normal thing to have a tv.

Does anyone else only watch things online? I only watch a couple of regular programmes anyway and I get them from the itv catch up.. I get new from the BBC news website and watch ilms on amazon prime

@Flute56

shops like Currys are still selling tvs even 40 inch screens so there must be a demand for them for some people
I love my big tv. Everything online is on my tv.

I'd hate to sit and watch a laptop.

lazylinguist · 09/05/2021 11:21

We still have a biggish tv. We virtually never watch scheduled tv, but very often watch all 4 of us together, which wouldn't work so well crowded around a laptop. I don't fancy a projector and can't think of a good place to project onto anyway.

Lonelycrab · 09/05/2021 11:31

I have a 48” tv but it’s not connected/tuned in to receive tv. My computer (a Mac) is what I use for everything. I don’t watch any catch up tv, mainly YouTube and music videos, gaming etc and also DVDs. Stopped paying my license a year or so back as I mainly watched the bbc for news- now they’re as bad as the Daily Mail and I get my news online from a range of sources.

BusterGonad · 09/05/2021 11:39

I wouldn't be without my TV, it's a, social thing, I really enjoy sitting watching TV (Netflix) in the evening with my husband, it would be a bit crap if it was a laptop. There's no comfort in huddling around a laptop.

teenagetantrums · 09/05/2021 11:48

I love my TV now. My and DP can watch films together on big screen . When grown kids are here we. Can all watch together.
However when l was living alone l just watched on laptop. No need for a TV for one person. Get rid of yours if you don't want it.

Aiguablava · 09/05/2021 11:58

I haven't had a TV since I left my parents house when I was 18. I never got one because I could never afford one but now I don't even want one. I'm used to not having one. People are surprised when I say I don't have a TV but no one has ever reacted negatively to it.

Mrbob · 09/05/2021 12:00

Me. Haven’t had one for about 6-7 years. I don’t have any subscriptions either so just free online streaming (bbc equivalent mainly) and not heaps of that. I hate commercial TV and I want no encouragement to waste my life in front of more programs

flashylamp · 09/05/2021 12:03

It would bother me watching anything on a laptop sized screen but if you are happy then yeah, no TV needed

LST · 09/05/2021 12:08

See we have a massive telly (65 inches) so going from that to a laptop sized screen would be a bit of a change. But we don't watch much live telly. We just stream.

Crimeismymiddlename · 09/05/2021 12:11

I didn’t have one for years. Got one, a very tiny camper van one that fits in one of the little slots in my living room unit. I don’t watch it a lot-maybe one evening a week if that or if I am into a show like line of duty and would not miss it if it went. It was a godsend when all I had to look forward to was married at first sight Australia though. You can definitely get rid and not notice.

bumblingbovine49 · 09/05/2021 12:14

I use my TV as a second screen for work so it is incredibly useful for that . Also we often watch a series as a family and the laptop is no good for that so no I would never get rid of my TV

MinesAPintOfTea · 09/05/2021 12:16

We didn’t “have anywhere to project onto” so put a pull down screen on the ceiling. Mantelpiece, paintings etc are there 95% of the time, then when we are watching something, screen is pulled down and we have an 80 inch “screen”

Mama1980 · 09/05/2021 12:22

We don't have one. Don't miss it

SelkieWings · 09/05/2021 12:36

I have a TV but it's not tuned in, it's hooked up to a gaming PC so used as a computer monitor.

Don't watch any TV at all, so only used to stream japanese cartoons, play PC switch/wii games and u tube occasionally. Been like this since we moved to this house so for 8+ years now.

Jocasta2018 · 09/05/2021 14:00

I watch a lot of Amazon Prime & Netflix on my laptop but I do have a 10-yr old tv with Freeview on it, connected to my DVD player & PS4.
I'm finding I don't want to watch stuff on my laptop anymore.
I've really enjoyed re-watching my DVD box sets on the tv during lockdown so I'm about to get a smart tv so I can get all the good stuff on a big screen.

(Not only do I have one tv but I'm about to get another!)

Ilovelove · 09/05/2021 16:40

I don’t have a tv and watch everything I want on a laptop.

It means we have true quiet in the house.

Watch what we want to see not what’s just on.

I really think it’s calmer in houses that don’t have televisions.

I do have a £60 projector to watch films and that’s really cool.

RampantIvy · 09/05/2021 19:25

I can’t think of anything more joyless than the two of us hunched over a small laptop screen with poor sound quality to watch Line of Duty instead of watching it spread out on the sofa to enjoy watching it on a widescreen TV that is connected to good quality speakers.

I like to watch TV when ironing and sometimes when in the kitchen. TBH A laptop with its small screen and poor sound quality just doesn’t cut it for me. But I am older and don’t have great eyesight or hearing (thank you measles).

Also, when DD is home we might all watch a film or a TV series together, and it is much better on a TV IMO.

We still record programmes as I find having to sit through adverts on catch up extremely irritating.

shops like Currys are still selling TVs even 40 inch screens so there must be a demand for them for some people

I think you are being naïve. DD is a student in a large house share. They watch a lot of stuff on Netflix and amazon Prime. It simply isn’t practical to have 8 people hunched round a laptop screen. Don’t you ever watch the same programme with someone else?

Flute56 · 10/05/2021 13:29

I have now arranged for my tv to be taken away. It will go to a charity shop and someone who really wants it and cannot afford a new one will buy it.

We have a tv. Also considering removing it. It’s never been connected to live tv ( none in English here), but is connected to Netflix/ amazon/ news app.

It’s never used. The only time dh or I watch anything is the news at breakfast sometimes, if I watch a film in the bath, or in bed if one of us is ill. All watched via IPad.

We have a 1 year old, so maybe he will start watching it at some point.

ohsuzannah · 19/05/2021 15:56

I haven't had a tv for the last three years! It's so relaxing without, I listen to classic fm, read, cook, or do gardening. I have Amazon prime and Netflix if I want to watch something on my laptop or iPad. I'm very happy without a tv, In fact, it gets on my nerves if I go to someone's house and they have it on all the time!

Flute56 · 21/05/2021 00:51

i got rid of my television 5 days ago and I dont miss it. I told someone I had got rid of it and the response was, how can you watch everything on your laptop because the screen is small and it would be better watching stuff on a bigger screen

I've moved to a new home recently and during house search through Rightmove/zoopla and house visits, I've noticed a lot of homes not having tv's. I have one TV and tbh, I rarely use it as I watch everything on the iPad. Only my toddler watches nursery rhymes on the TV. Do you now have more space since you've removed the TV op?

KaleSlayer · 21/05/2021 01:07

i got rid of my television 5 days ago and I dont miss it.

Why would you miss it? You said in your OP that you hadn’t even switched it on for 3years. Did you expect to miss it? Confused
