Have i wrecked my log burner??

Brand new. First use. Put in one of the wrapped paper log pulled things. Sat and watched it burn beautifully. And then the black tar like substance filled the glass door. Because it's for open fires not log buners. And I didn't see that until ooh, about 3 hours in. I've tried water, white spirits, ceramic hob cleaner, ethanol, maths and nothing is shifting it. I've wrecked it haven't I??

DH uses washing up liquid on our glass, has never failed. Swarfega if we were desperate, I guess.

The Absolute Best Thing to use is that Dr Power white eraser stuff and water. It's like magic.

Also a Top Tip for lighting the fire. Your kids can make you some firefighters! Squish the end of a loo roll tube closed and stuff the hollow with the fluff from your tumble drier filter. Then squish the other end closed. They work brilliantly.

I have one of those. Will try it before the washing up liquid.

washing up liquid moved nothing. white eraser stuck to it.

Did you use steel wool to scrub the glass?
Cost about £20 to replacer our glass, which is your extreme solution, although I imagine with time & more fires it will shift, too. Me & DH have each broke our glass once.

hven't tried that .bit worried about scratching the glass. will try hobrite tomorrow. if not, might try brillo pad as might need to replace it anyway.

DH cleans ours with a wet wipe. Apparently it comes off quite easy.

Tal45 · 16/03/2021 12:58

Oh just in case you didn't know, don't wipe the glass down if it's hot, it's makes it go all cracked looking. We've had to replace ours before because of it, but it was easy to do and not very expensive.

combatbarbie · 16/03/2021 13:02

We use the Ash to clean the glass but if you've already done that and it hasn't worked I'm not sure what to suggest.

And you need a thermometer in case it starts burning too hot and wrecks the flue and to start it.... You can't just chuck on some firelighters with logs on top, it needs to be built up to temperature before adding the solid fuel.

Springsoonplease · 16/03/2021 14:22

Theromstate tells you the most efficient burning rate.

Re glass. We use the pink stuff cream.if not intending to light a fire. If we are going to light a fire , due to hot fast burn . You get this by opening the vents.. this makes it burn fast and hot ans normally gets the black off. If it doesnt then use the pink stuff cream . Leave it on for ten mins and it should come off.
