Why did I buy a pink velvet armchair?

Well I suppose I bought it because, before it got covered in baby milk and ground-in biscuit mush, and... well, never mind what else... Before all that happened it was truly beautiful. But now it's an eyesore. Is there any way of cleaning velvet without taking it to dry cleaners? I'm useless at this sort of thing... Thanks so much in advance!

One of those ones you hire? That's a thought... It's shocking pink velvet, and I was worried that I'd spoil the 'pile' or the colour by doing anything too drastic... I love it so much I'll be heartbroken if I spoil it!

Do you have any upholsterers near you? You could go & ask their advice. I think the steam cleaner is a good idea, but you might want to check whether it'll affect the pile. Ask at a dry-cleaners? Is the place you bought it still going? Again, you could ask them. I'm all for trying to get free advice (people can be very helpful if you ask nicely).

those are all really helpful thoughts, thank you! I'll try the detergent suds as per the link first, thanks Chipminton. I bought it from Habitat and their suggestion was that I should buy replacment covers for a few hundred quid. Erm... No thanks!

at Habitat. Not very Reduce, Reuse, Recycle is it?
If they're removable it probably would be worth taking them to the dry-cleaners TBH - be cheaper than buying new covers! But try the suds first
