Net Curtains - Please tell me they're not old fashioned!

Morning ladies!

We have recently moved into a house (well, July actually) and they have left behind their vertical blinds, which we have been using until we decorate room by room. However I do feel that they dont offer much privacy when open and would really like to stick some nets up - nothing with big flowers on or anything, but more of a modern subtle thing.

Are nets still ok to have or are they only for people over 60?

TIA!

manchita - I'm a slattern

perhaps I should slink off from this Good housekeeping topic

manchita · 01/11/2007 12:11

Is a slattern a type of blind? I thought you said you had nets

If you must buy net curtains, you also have to buy a nylon nightie and an electric blanket

iota · 01/11/2007 12:16

Lazarou - no need when you have a warm cat on the bed to keep you snug

Have just read the OP.

Vertical blinds or nets? What a choice!

Do I want my house to look like an insurance office, or George and Mildred's house?

RGPargy · 01/11/2007 19:44

PMSL Grumpy!!!!

I didn't realise my post would be the start of such a debate!!

I dont like the idea of the kids that play on the green out the front of my house being able to see me sitting on the sofa picking my nose (if i were to be so inclined) and we have very big windows too.

Think i will deffo go for the subtle modern "voile" look on the front room windows and bedroom windows, just for a bit of privacy.

Old fashioned? Rather be old fashioned than have people looking in the windows of my ground floor flat. I've never got over the time when some grubby little oik banged on my window and waved whilst I was bfing DS2 It took ages before I felt comfortable again, so I have extra thick (plain) nets.

RGPargy · 01/11/2007 19:56

Oh yes, Serenity. I'm going to deffo need nets in the front room in the next couple of weeks when my LO arrives!

and how awful that that happened to you!

I just replaced voiles with wooden venetians. Look lovely.

NineUnlikelyTales · 01/11/2007 22:00

Fiery they do look nice but you now have two options:

a) Dust constantly or
b) Look at a thick layer of dust on each and every slat

I have just removed every wooden venetian in our house. I found they cut out too much light and were a pain to keep clean.

RGPargy · 01/11/2007 23:29

I want wooden venetians in the kitchen and hallway. I think it would look lovely.

Dusting is easy. Close slats > dust. Open and close the other way > dust.

laura032004 · 02/11/2007 08:12

I should get some nets really - I keep scaring the old bloke opposite when he's doing his garden

We have a horizontal metal blind in our kitchen (never used it - permanently up). How do they score in the grand scheme of blinds?

warthog · 02/11/2007 08:18

vertical blinds are so disgusting. unfortunately i said as much to a friend who just installed them, having got them mixed up with venetian. embarrassed silence when i went to her house...

definitely go for venetian. net curtains are yuck.

yogimum · 02/11/2007 08:30

I am having shutters made for downstairs. Wish they would hurry up, ordered them in September.

NineUnlikelyTales · 02/11/2007 08:32

Oh frig Fiery, why didn't I work that out for myself?

lust4life · 02/11/2007 11:17

venetians are extremely dangerous and should be removed immediately

OrmIrian · 02/11/2007 11:20

Don't know if they are old-fashioned but I'd chew my own arm off before I put any up.... One of my pet hates.

Sorry.

ImBarryScott · 02/11/2007 11:30

Hurrah! I'm glad there's finally some wrath being dished out for those awful vertical office blind. Every house in the street opposite us is kitted out with these, and I thought I was alone in thinking they are grotesque.

I rather like the old French solution of not bothering to cover one's windows at all.

Caroline1852 · 02/11/2007 12:22

What about some etched glass? We have etched glass in our loo and it looks great. Or if you don't want the expense of changing the glass - what about etched glass film - look here www.brume.co.uk

NineUnlikelyTales · 02/11/2007 13:40

Caroline I did think of Brume but the cost was enormous (for us at the moment anyway). I did like the idea a lot though.

bluefox · 02/11/2007 13:51

Anyone on here got "up" blinds? (like rollers but pull up from the sills). I really fancy some but not 100% sure.
