Does anyone else use clothes horses?

I'm trying to catch up with laundry & ratherm than use the tumble dryer all the time, I'm using clothes horses.

Just out of curiosity, who else still uses them, and, do you mind your living room/kitchen or where ever you put them smelling and looking like a chinese laundry.

DD2 (5) is sat in front of the washer waiting for the next load to finish so she can put some more on

i do.....

but willl go back to tumble drier when it is deivered

PirateoftheScarybeing · 26/10/2007 10:27

i use one in my bedroom, the central heating boiler and tank are in a cupborad inthere so they dry v quick.

GarrottedbyElasticband · 26/10/2007 10:27

oh yes, wouldnt be without mine, don't really use tumble drier, and anyway lots of stuff is tumble driable!

i generlaly take it in off the line and at this time of year is not totally dry, so on the clothes horse it goes.

i was without recently and at a total loss.

tis in the bathroom, and small one in the downstairs loo where it is really warm

mishymoo · 26/10/2007 10:27

I use my clothes horse more than my tumble drier! I hang clothes in spare room out of the way but that still looks like a chinese laundry.

wotsits · 26/10/2007 10:28

I do, cos I don't have a tumbledrier, and don't want one. I put mine up in the top-floor bathroom by the window, and the whole floor smells lovely.

harleyweendemon · 26/10/2007 10:29

i use one for the stuff that cant be tumbled

Plinkyplonk · 26/10/2007 10:29

Mines in front of the living room window, talk about airing your 'dirty' laundry in public :d

I've got 4 and put them wherever there's a space

Judy1234 · 26/10/2007 10:42

We have two and they are in the utiliy room where the drier and washer are and lots of things go on them including clothes my daughters won't allow near the tumble drier and things we don't dry in there.

FranSanDisco · 26/10/2007 10:43

Yes I have one in the Utility Room. Prior to having a UR it was in the living room which was a depressing sight. I also use a tumble drier. I think we have too many clothes or wash them too often as I have washing week not day

We use one in the airing cupboard (where the hot water tank is) to dry things that can't be tumble dried.

MrsBadger · 26/10/2007 11:00

oh yes
atm I have one in the dining room for things that can't go in the dryer, but in the summer I have two out in the garden for socks etc that are a pain to peg.

my laundry doesn't smell though

pud1 · 26/10/2007 11:37

i have one in the spare bedroom and i like it when it full of clean washing and it makes the room smell of fabric conditioner.

NomDeBroomstick · 26/10/2007 11:39

Yes, I have 2 big ones. Mine live in the spare room (utility is big but they would get in the way of the spare fridge/freezer and the hoovers etc.

nutcracker · 26/10/2007 11:40

Me, brought one a few months ago and use it loads. Only use the dryer now for bed linen.

nutcracker · 26/10/2007 11:40

Oh mine is in my room, bit of an eye sore, but no where else for it really.

nailpolish · 26/10/2007 11:41

my laundry smells lovely - why would you not want to smell freshly laundered clothes??

we have clothes horses because tumble dryers are terrible for the environment plus they cost a f*cking fortune to run and im not prepared to pay £££ just to have my clothes dried slightly earlier

just stick it in the bathroom

ideally i would like a pulley - i ahd one in my old flat and i loved it

where can you buy pulleys these days?

nailpolish · 26/10/2007 11:42

ndp you have more than one fridge, freezer and hoover?!

NomDeBroomstick · 26/10/2007 11:44

Ebay has them, naily. I bought one but my utility ceiling is too flimsy to hold it up (there are no crossbeams to hold the weight). Mine is a 7ft one, it will be going into the new utility when the extension is built (I will be making a point of putting a proper beam in the ceiling to support it).

I hate tumble driers too.

nailpolish · 26/10/2007 11:45

ooooooooh thanks ndp i will have a look. every home should have them as standard IMO!

NomDeBroomstick · 26/10/2007 11:46

Yes

We have a big built in fridge/freezer in the kitchen and an under counter fridge and freezer (1 of each), from our old house. We use the little freezer like most people use their chest freezers and the little fridge is a drinks fridge.

We have a Henry hoover and a Dyson upright. The Henry is brilliant for the hard floors and stairs but crap on carpets and the Dyson is the opposite.

Mine lives in the utility room. If weather permits, I bung it out the back door - can easily lift it back in if it starts to rain. (its not huge).

I am tending to partially dry things on this and finish off with a tumble so they are a bit softer.

I hang stuff in the airing cupboard too.

FranSanDisco has a point about the amount of washing we do nowadays. My DH looked bemusedly at the stack of school blouses I was ironing (one per day), remembering that when he was at school he had 2 bri-nylon shirts. Ew.

nailpolish · 26/10/2007 11:48

ooh get you ndp!
dh wants a chest freezer but i have visions of him buy a whole cow so i said no just now
