Does anyone else use clothes horses?

Plinkyplonk · 26/10/2007 10:24

I'm trying to catch up with laundry & ratherm than use the tumble dryer all the time, I'm using clothes horses.

Just out of curiosity, who else still uses them, and, do you mind your living room/kitchen or where ever you put them smelling and looking like a chinese laundry.

DD2 (5) is sat in front of the washer waiting for the next load to finish so she can put some more on

I have two and I also put them outside when the weather permits. V useful.

Madwelshwoman · 26/10/2007 14:39

Got mine in my airing cupboard to cut down on tumble dryer usage. fab it is clothes dry overnight. Hated it before when it had to sit in lounge or bedroom

JackieNoHeadJustABloodyStump · 26/10/2007 14:39

We have one that lives in our en suite, and I just ordered another one yesterday from John Lewis, as I'm struggling to keep up with the drying on the one. The second one will go in the spare room. No tumble dryer. Don't really want to get one, hence purchase of second clothes horse.

I have one in the airing cupboard and the clothes dry over night, and another in my en suite which I hate but I need the extra drying space and there is nowhere else to put it.

In our old one-bedroom flat, we used to have a pulley airer over our bed.

The baby used to prefer lying under the clothes than lying under his play arc. His favourite sport was watching me pull it up and down - 'bout the only workout I got.

Now we live in a house and we have an airer against our bedroom wall. We're about to have our loft done and have a debate about whether to put up the pulley in the new study ( you need to put it on a joist) What do we think about pulleys in studies?

spookybatoscar · 26/10/2007 14:54

I use one. I try and let the clothes dry as much as possible in our 3 floored mid victorian unheated terrace then I finish it with 10 mins in the tumble dryer

lucyellensmum · 26/10/2007 14:56

my tumble dryer is broken, so yes, i do - i did use it all the time actually but DP gets antsy about clothes everywhere, dont say i blame him really. In fact, im just about to have the back off the tumble dryer to see if its the belt thats gone.

Pinkchampagne · 26/10/2007 15:00

I do, although I am using my tumble dryer quite a bit now instead.

LazyLinePUMPKINJane · 26/10/2007 15:00

I use one in the winter as we do not have a drier. It is in the utility in the only place that there is for it but it drives me mad as EVERY SINGLE TIME I walk past it, I catch myself on it

NAB3 · 26/10/2007 15:05

Move it, go on now, you will be glad you did. Even if it is only an inch.

lomondgore · 26/10/2007 15:07

I have two which I keep in my bedroom. They are constantly full and I hate having to look at them but I don't have room for a tumble dryer.

Love the smell of clean laundry

Notquitegrownup · 26/10/2007 15:13

Yep, I have one, and a wooden pulley in our tiny utility room (you can get them from Argos too NP, but they are in the kitchen section.)

Don't have an ideal place for the horse, so it moves around, according to where we are least likely to fall over it!

Wouldn't use a tumble drier for environmental reasons.

kittykoo · 26/10/2007 15:16

got one in the guest room but i'm a b*gger for leaving the clothes on it for days, or just transferring the clothes to the bed where they remain for even longer...

nailpolish · 26/10/2007 15:17

lol thankyou NQ

NotMellow · 26/10/2007 15:22

I think I will get one of those wooden ceiling thingys, I keep breaking our normal standing one. I have too much washing/laundry so I tend to overload it. I have been through 2 in the past 6 months.

nailpolish · 26/10/2007 15:24

some gadgets for you ladies who are short on space;

one

two

three

i cant find the pulleys in argos

LazyLinePUMPKINJane · 26/10/2007 15:30

You are right NAB of course.

We do also have a peggy hangy thingy that hangs above the water heater that is wonderful. I put all small things on it and they dry so quickly.

NotMellow · 26/10/2007 15:34

How much do these ones usually cost, the ceiling ones?

and

Are they easy to fit [dh useless at DIY anything]

CatIsSpooky · 26/10/2007 15:45

I do- tumble-drier uses too much electricity

there's virtually always washing cluttering up our living-room
I don't really care though!

jackielantern · 26/10/2007 15:50

Yes - if I tumble try for about 30 mins (still damp but hot) and then put straight over the clothes horse I don't need to iron anything!

spookthief · 26/10/2007 19:38

Mine was £40 I think. It should be easy to fit as there are only two screws, but you need to find a sodding ceiling joist. So far we have 6 holes in the ceiling..... The pulley remains on the floor.

MrsBadger · 26/10/2007 19:45

good variety of pulleys

NotMellow · 30/10/2007 08:27

thanks very much screwthief & mrsbadger

very helpful

piggyp · 03/11/2007 11:17

I always use a clothes horse - never tumble dry. I put it in the kitchen and as long as the room is nice and airy the clothes dry beautifully - much kinder for your woollen things! We also have an old fashioned pulley system rail thing in the utility room which is fantastic! I can't understand why they went out of fashion, no idea where you get them though! I agree with nail polish regarding tumble driers - I never use it!

Yeni · 19/11/2007 10:40

I use one in my drying room which has the boiler in it. I call it a drying room but it is just a huge airing cupboard with a window that is a completely wasted space otherwise. I find that things dry overnight but I hate the fact that everything needs ironing.
