Things you wash in the dishwasher

Recently I've become the proud new owner of a dishwasher.

I'm after suggestions of things you use it for - so far, I've put glass candle lanterns in (there's no wax on them), and my oven racks to rid of the loose bits before I scrub them. Anything else it's good for?

@PigletJohn

How many separate kitchen sinks do you have, then?
Exactly!
JemimaTiggywinkle · 07/01/2021 10:15

All the fiddly bits and pieces from the coffee machine occasionally.

Also remember to clean your dishwasher every now and again.. with descaling tablets and also clean around the seals and get the filter etc out for a clean.

When people put Lego in the dishwasher are you just chucking it all in or do you put it in something - like a net bag you'd use in the washing machine?

icelollycraving · 07/01/2021 11:20

God, loo brushes and crocs, that is horrific.
The only non cutlery/ china/ glass thing that goes in mine is the dispenser drawer from the washing machine and cat bowls. It also brings up the door shelves from the fridge up a treat.

Great thread! Following for ideas. Although my toilet brush is not going anywhere near the kitchen...

you can put small things in the cutlery basket, if you have one, or in a sieve or a colander. The idea is that the hot soapy water will slosh around them but not blast them out of place so they fall to the bottom. In a colander, most of the water will fall on them from above. Larger or heavier items can just go in the racks, preferably positioned so they will not fill up with water that can't drain out, or you will have to rinse them in the sink after. Some things can be impaled or hung on the wire spikes.

labels or printed decoration may wash off.

TheFairyCaravan · 07/01/2021 17:45

Why would you put the dishwasher on for 30mins to do a soft boiled egg when it takes a couple of minutes on the hob?

W5 dishwasher tablets from Lidl are the best imo. They’re as cheap as chips and get everything off.

Rainb0wDrops · 07/01/2021 17:56

Thank you @PigletJohn

That's my weekend sorted. Lego beware, it's off to the dishwasher with you!

JorisBonson · 07/01/2021 17:57

Everything I can fit in, much to the dishwasher police's DH's despair.

speakout · 07/01/2021 18:03

Stirrups, OH's dentures, car mats, plant pots.

UsernameFail · 07/01/2021 18:15

My DH once washed bricks in our dishwasher.

I am not kidding.

A few years later a engineer came round to fix a problem and commented how clean the dishwasher was; but he couldn't understand where all the sand stuck in came from

JorisBonson · 07/01/2021 18:16

Why did the bricks need a clean? 😂🤦🏻‍♀️

Halloweiner · 07/01/2021 18:25

I wash my fridge shelves in it and my sink caddy, also sink plugs

UsernameFail · 07/01/2021 18:43

@JorisBonson they had been in a fish tank and needed a clean!! 🤣🤣🤣

lemonsquashie · 07/01/2021 19:56

I remember on how clean is your house a woman put in the tube that she used for colonic irrigation.

PronkWine · 08/01/2021 20:31

Stirrups and bits (if you have horses)

ichundich · 08/01/2021 23:45

Mostly just cutlery and crockery. But I do use it for cleaning our toothbrush heads; especially the kids are terrible at washing them out properly. Crocs are better placed in the washing machine IMO; they always come out clean even on a 40 degree wash. Would love to know if you can actually clean a mooncup in the dishwasher - it clearly says 'not dishwasher-safe' in the instructions.

AnnaSW1 · 08/01/2021 23:50

An old colleague used to put her loo seat in it. She was nasty 🤢

tshirtsuntan · 09/01/2021 00:06

Washing up bowl, soap holder thingy on the shower hose, toothbrush holder, small plastic bins, oven racks, Lego. All fine. Crocs (garden use only Grin melted a bit and shrunk.

londonscalling · 12/01/2021 14:53

Pretty much everything although some things haven't worked. I was given a glass with writing on as a gift. When it came out it was a totally clear glass. I think it must have been hand painted!
