HELP! I think I have wrecked my wood kitchen counter and need advice

I have been really unwell and in bed the last week and I had dishes in the kitchen I was leaving until I got better, but turns out I had put a cauliflower on the counter instead of the bin and it has gone putrid and partly turned to liquid (gross I know but I didn’t realise!) and now it is on a section of my worktop. I have wiped it all but it has gone into the wood and it is very discoloured. I planned on letting it dry and trying to sand it out, but I am worried because it is not just a food stain but a rotten food stain and I know nothing about wood. Any advice much appreciated!

DH burned ours with battery acid, it sanded out!

Sand it out then re-oil it.

Oxalic acid is the stuff used by boaters to restore water stained wood. It might do the trick.

You can sand it and bleach it if the stain doesn’t come out. Once it’s sanded just re-oil ( a million times!)

We've just finishing oiling our new floor and surface, and we called Wood Finishes Direct several times, who gave us very helpful advice. Not just on products, but how best to apply them, which sandpaper to use, etc. We also used Osmo oil, which we're really pleased with.

Hope you're feeling better now too. Flowers

It happens all the time in my house. Sand it and re-oil it and it will be like new.

Thanks everyone, feeling relieved!
