Washing school blazer

AppleCrumbleCake · 19/09/2020 14:44

My DC has just started secondary school and is wearing a blazer for the first time.

How often do you wash your child's blazer?

I just worry if i wash it too often it will lose its shape!

Thanks 🙂

My DD has been at secondary school for 3 years. I've washed her blazer twice.. possibly 3 times. Luckily it's the same fabric as trousers and skirts. Another school near us has tweed blazers, I imagine they are an absolute pain to wash.

Makinglists · 19/09/2020 14:48

About every half term. Though if something spilt on it the following weekend. Ours are black so don't show grime

redgin · 19/09/2020 14:48

I used to freshen it up every half term or so.

I found they lost shape anyway due to the heavy bags on their shoulder, or being stuffed in said bag 🙄

Stinkyguineapig · 19/09/2020 14:48

I'm worried I am going to get flamed for my laundry slackness now by MNers who wash their blazers daily!Blush

TheBitterBoy · 19/09/2020 14:49

Every half term. I find the shoulder area particularly takes a day or so to dry fully, so I like to do it in the holidays.

OhSweetNuthin · 19/09/2020 14:49

I was washing them once a month, now I've bought clothes steamer and I steam them once a day to kill off germs and will still wash once a month.

allinadaystwerk · 19/09/2020 14:50

My ds gets his blazer dirty often. I wipe it down every week with a damp sponge and wash it on delicate every other month. It still looks fine.

gubbbbbddaaaa · 19/09/2020 15:02

If it's polyester it's fine to bung in the wash , it won't lose its shape and just needs hanging up..I washed my daughters every week ( teens are sweaty).. if it's private school it will no doubt be wool and will need dry cleaning

Flaunch · 19/09/2020 15:07

I wash dds every couple of weeks and she’s been wearing it 4 years and it still looks alright.

They’re designed to be washed. Would you wear something all day every day and only wash it once every term? 🤢

notso · 19/09/2020 15:16

I used to wash DS's daily, unless it was really hot weather and he'd been able to take it off. It was always a bit armpitty by the end of the day.
I just did a 15 min wash with some Dettol stuff then a longer wash at the weekend. It dried over night in the airing cupboard.

Grandcandy · 19/09/2020 15:25

My DD started secondary school 3 weeks ago. I washed her blazer for the first time yesterday but it didnt really need to be washed, ie wasnt stained or dirty. It was more for a freshen up.
I think I'm going to give it a wash once every 4 weeks from here on out.

Cuddling57 · 19/09/2020 16:00

@OhSweetNuthin I was just about to suggest using a clothes steamer. Which one do you have? I'm looking at the moment.

Chocolate4me · 19/09/2020 16:14

My son gets sweaty and then doesn't want to take it off so I wash it every 2nd day and it washes and drys really well, but I'm always doing a coloured wash every 2nd day anyway

OhSweetNuthin · 19/09/2020 16:42

@Cuddling57 I got it off Amazon, here's the link.

Our are done every second week. More frequently if the get something on them. Eldest DS has his moments of pong, so impromptu washing of his had been known. Envy not envy

Orchidflower1 · 19/09/2020 17:11

I’m doing it daily atm. I wouldn’t wear something to work two days running given current situation. Def going to invest in a clothes steamer though. Thanks pp.

Chewbecca · 19/09/2020 17:12

When I get a waft of BO when I pass it on the stairs is sadly my trigger.

It’s polyester so washes and dries easily and quickly.

dingledongle · 19/09/2020 17:13

Every half-term, unless really dirty, on a gentle wash 😊

FloweringFlowers · 19/09/2020 17:18

Washed dd’s this weekend, so every other week. She plays sports after school every day and it just gets rolled up in bag with smelly football boots etc...

GuyFawkesDay · 19/09/2020 17:24

They need washing.

Trust me, as a teacher, quite a lot of kids who smell have unwashed blazers. And when they're wearing them and the blazer materialgets warm, the smells gets worse.....

Please think of the teacher and TAs noses and wash them!

Wash it on 40, then just put it on a decent wide shouldered hanger to dry.

theconstantinoplegardener · 19/09/2020 17:25

My DD's blazer is polyester and it washes and dries very easily. I wash it on a gentle/synthetic cycle once a week, because at her school they have to wear their blazers at all times. It still looks fine so far.

FelicityFisher · 19/09/2020 17:28

I wash my year 9 boys blazer every Friday. Just pop it in on 40 degrees and it comes out perfectly and fries within a couple of hours

I'm not a washing obsessive particularly but I do like him to be fresh and clean and when it's so easy to freshen up, why not

FelicityFisher · 19/09/2020 17:28

^dries not fries!
