Scaffolding quote for my house decoration work £5k??? Surely not that much?

And that's not including VAT.
This is the quote i've been given for some scaffolding to go up so the decorators can paint the windows and do some other minorish work. They can't use ladders for the 2nd floor as it is too high up and breaks regulations. Fair enough.

But although I do live in a tallish 3 storey 5bed Victorian house, it isn't a stately home and this seems like so much!

I was expecting maybe £700 or so not £5,000.

Is this the going rate??!

Get a few quotes

£700 sounds about right

boo64 · 03/10/2007 11:19

£700 was a complete guess really. £5k just sounds utterly ridiculous doesn't it. Maybe the guy who came to do the quote thought I was really gullible.

Can't they use one of those platforms that are on lockable wheels and can be moved along? I think £5k is taking the mickey! They prob. saw your nice house and tripled the price.

mishymoo · 03/10/2007 11:25

Are they using platinum posts or something? I guess it depends where you live but I would have thought £700 was reasonable!

We paid 2 grand for our house a few years' ago which I thought was extortionate. That's four and a half storeys, huge Edwardian villa in Central London with steps down one side so different levels of scaffolding required. So 5k seems outrageous

ps I only occupy one floor - not living in a stately home either

for £5k you could buy a scaffolding tower. Or two.

My very boring op has turned quite entertaining - yep I reckon the posts are diamond encrusted too as well as platinum!

They couldn't use a platform/ wheeled trolley thing as thinking about it there are a couple of flat roofed one storey bits on the ground floor that stick out and make things a bit more complicated (but it can't be 5k worth of complicated)

Mrs Merton = I definitely think builders etc have a tendency to add a 'posh house premium' and it is very annoying!

The price for the scaffolding hire + redecorating windows and the bits under the roof and replacing literally a few roof tiles comes to 10k! I bet you can buy a small dwelling in some places for that. Ridiculous.
