Do you have fairy lights in your children's bedrooms?

I love fairy lights but am never sure when to use them. The children are in their rooms for about ten minutes before they go to bed so it hardly seems worth it to turn them on then - and they look pretty rubbish if they're off all the time.
I don't really want to leave them on whilst they go to sleep because
a) they don't have night lights
and
b) possible fire hazard
and
c) unnecessary waste of power - unless I suppose you use a timer switch?

Have they a point at all?

they do look pretty when you see them on tv etc

but they also pose a potential strangulation hazard also

Mine have fairy lights - well, football lights in ds's case. I turn them on just before they go their rooms to start getting ready for bed,a nd off again when I go to bed.

We have fairylights (dragonflies) in their bedroom. They mostly come in to their own right in the winter time though. At the moment when their friends come over in the evening they sit in the top bunkbed with the lights off and the fairylights on.

We sometimes put them on when they are going to bed at night, mostly on special occassions (when I remember).

The switch is in adult height and they can't reach them as they are hanging from the ceiling (even when they stand on a chair).

we have a rope light on the ceiling in dd2+3 room. i switch them on in the evening as they are off to bed, as well as their ghost night light thingy, and switch both off once they are asleep. dd1 has hanging LED stars in her room, i do the same thing there as well.

I think they're v pretty but I am a fire hazard fanatic. They are not the kind of thing I would leave on all night - same as I wouldn't leave fairy lights on all night on a Christmas tree. I also wouldn't leave them on near bedding or curtains.

DD has some lovely lights - literally mauve fairies with white lights inside and also a butterfly visual effect thingy which she puts on when she goes to bed. I guess it could be a fire hazard but from the waste of power POV, I go upstairs about 30 mins later when she is asleep and switch them off.

DD has fairy lights around her bedroom window. They go on in an evening if she is playing up there, and ajust before bedtime.

I turn them off and unplug them when DH and I go up to bed.

DDs both have fairy lights in their rooms. Plastic hearts with pink and purple fluffy bits around the,. They have shelving units in their rooms and it's draped over the top of that.

If I had fairy lights or any kind of rope lights in the Dses bedroom then DS2 would use them as a rope swing like they do on Pirates of the Carribean and swing from his bed to his brothers.

or he'd strangle himself

Fimbo · 20/09/2007 13:16

DD has Groovy Chick ones that hang across the top of her curtains. She only usually puts them on when her friends are round and they are playing in her room.

I hadn't even considered strangulation!

I don't think I'll bother getting any just yet - it sounds like just another thing to add to the list of things I have to remember every night.

DD1 has a fairly night net that's battery operated - got that through Avon some time ago - and hangs on the ceiling with her overhead light in the middle.

It looks wicked cool.
