Can we talk about robot vacuums?

It arrived today and I've just let it vacuum every room. I love it! It's my second robot vacuum. The first one was a Roomba and I loved it very much but sadly it's dead... I had been without it for years and really wanted to own one again. The new one is a eufy - a lot cheaper than the old one but I am very happy with it. Having a robot vacuum is a game-changer for me! Just wanted to share my excitement, I guess!

I will hopefully soon join you in your excitement as I've ordered one! Can't remember which one though...

Labralion · 15/05/2020 21:48

The eufy was a game changer here. Behold my name! Dog sheds enough to make him a daily mane, this majorly helps!

magnaconcordia · 15/05/2020 22:05

Hello!

I was torn between Bagotte and eufy but I went for eufy in the end. I also considered 3 in 1 type but decided to stick to just vacuum.

I've just cleaned the eufy. I found it easier than my old Roomba. Roomba had more parts to go through.

Really happy!

Do you have to have a very clear house for them to work? For example we have a lounge/diner with a sofa, armchair, coffee table, dining table and six chairs - would that be too much navigating for the Hoover?

magnaconcordia · 17/05/2020 09:40

I think having a clear pathway for the hoover to go around is more important than how many items in the room. For instance, my open-plan living room has two sofas, coffee table, dining table, two benches, piano, computer desk and chair, four bookcases, side table, and TV. So much stuff! But it works fine. We don't leave too much clutter on the floor and also don't have a rug with long hair. So I guess it's pretty robot-hoover friendly nevertheless.

Mine has arrived!

I'd be excited, but had forgotten about the massive clearout we've been having (and are still having...) and the poor wee thing would have it's work cut out, so it's still in its box and hopefully, after work today, I'll get enough cleared that it can be released!

I really want to put googly eyes on it...

And I'm going to have to keep the dogs out or penned as I don't think it'll survive their, um, interest level!

magnaconcordia · 18/05/2020 09:36

Hooray, it arrived! I hope you can enjoy no-more-vacuum life soon!

We kept our massive bi-fold doors fully open yesterday as the weather was nice. It was lovely but it invited lots of dirt and mud as we went in and out through a day...

Thanks to my little eufy though, I woke up to the dirt-free floors! A little thing like this just makes me so happy!

I am very tempted to get one but haven't been sure if they are worth it. Our cordless vax blade is beyond useless so it's either replace that for another cordless or get a robot.

Do you have hard floors, carpet or a mix of both?

magnaconcordia · 18/05/2020 10:01

I would say get a robot definitely! I would rather save my time and energy for occasional mopping by letting a robot to take care of collecting dirt and dust.

We don't have carpet but have a large rug like carpet. My eufy cleans it nicely. But every robot has pros and cons so you need to research and find one that caters your needs. I hate hair on the floor/rug so I went for a specific model that had good reviews on picking hair well.

They cost a lot (for me anyway) years ago, but now so many reasonable and reliable ones are available.

LaurieFairyCake · 18/05/2020 10:03

Which one did you get?

magnaconcordia · 18/05/2020 10:07

To maximise the benefit of having a robot, you've got to arrange your house robot-friendly though. One of my friends bought it but has hardly used as her house isn't robot-friendly so she found it too much hassle every time she tried to use it.

eufy 11s max.

At first, my choices were eufy 15c max vs eufy 11s. 11s has been very successful but 15c max was newer and more powerful with 2000pa so nearly bought 15c max. Then I found 11s max and noticed the major difference between 11s max and 15c max were wifi connection and the ability to work with Alexa. Although I have Alexa, I knew I wouldn't need the function really. So in the end I went for 11s max as it's slightly cheaper and also 11s models (including 1500ps model) had better reviews on picking hair. There were some good reasons for choosing 15c max but they weren't important to me.

Aha, yes to the Roomba, saves so much time which means I can be doing other fun stuff instead of cleaning floors.

I've also got a mopping Roomba for the tiled floors once the vacuum Roomba has finished.

Perfect pair, specially if you have back problems.

Wingingitsince2018 · 18/05/2020 11:05

There's a mopping roomba?!?!

Off to Google!

MrsFezziwig · 18/05/2020 11:10

Can the Eufy negotiate the difference in height between hard floors and a rug? I’m currently all hard floors but want to get some rugs.

magnaconcordia · 18/05/2020 11:38

winging, there are mopping and vacuuming combined robots too so you have a choice to go for getting two robots or just one robot for two jobs.

MrsFezziwog, yes they can, both manually and automatically. My eufy go round independently and freely on my hard floors with rugs.

Wingingitsince2018 Most definitely and it's fabulous. The models have changed a couple of times in recent years but I chose the smaller of the mopping robots (Braava Jet) because it only needs to clean the actual tiles...and not the rugs. It's also the perfect size for bathrooms as it can get it close around the base of toilets etc. Another reason for choosing this model is that the Braava 380T uses the ceiling to bounce the signal from and nobody, including iRobot themselves, could tell me how it would navigate using the cathedral, timber ceilings in this house. It's a larger unit as well, but the Jet is perfect.

I use generic mopping pads (wet/damp/dry) and wash them ready for next mopping session. The Jet only uses less than a teaspoon of cleaning agent and I use a nice floral perfumed one....anymore than a teaspoon leaves streaks on the tiles.

Hope this helps?

WindyRose · 18/05/2020 12:13

MrsFezziwig Roomba doesn't hesitate going onto a medium pile rug but as soon as it gets onto the shag pile rug it panics and evacuates!! So funny to watch!! I only have one shag pile so it's not a huge problem to clean it with the Dyson handheld.

magnaconcordia · 18/05/2020 13:42

Just to satisfy my curiosity, do those who own a robot vacuum/mop also have a cleaner? Or used to have one but stopped because robots have removed enough housekeeping chores so you can handle the rest without a cleaner?

OP posts:
WindyRose · 19/05/2020 10:31

Don't know about other posters, but I have 'never' had a cleaner. I first got a robot due to a back problem, that was making regular vacuuming and mopping extremely painful, so the robot is a godsend.

;-)

Wingingitsince2018 · 19/05/2020 11:29

Thanks @windyrose I will have a look at the model you suggested. With a toddler in and out the garden all day it feels like I am constantly cleaning the floor. Much worse since lockdown started as we are all home all day but I was really struggling to keep on top of it when we were both working.

WindyRose · 19/05/2020 12:43

Wingingitsince2018 Check Gumtree as you might find one listed there. Before the Braava Jet there was the Scooba but it's a much larger unit and therefore can't physically get into smaller spaces, although I guess it would do as good a job in open areas.

However both of these models are discontinued but quite often people only use them once or twice and them put them in a cupboard. From there you move into the more recent models which as expected are more expensive....just depends on your budget and what suits you.

Good luck ;-)

QuarantineDream · 12/06/2020 20:00

I'm finally ready to get one and struggling to work out which one would suit me best - how did you narrow it down? I saw the Roborock is highly recommended in my local mums group.

WindyRose · 13/06/2020 08:33

First off I bought an el cheapo brand (sorry, can't remember name) which was a total disaster as the original one lasted 1.5 hrs and it's replacement lasted 30 minutes, so I requested a refund and saved $$ for a bit longer to buy a genuine iRobot.

Also I didn't 'need' the programmable model (higher cost) as I am able to press the 'start' button and it returns to the charging station once cleaning is finished anyway.

So really it comes down to your budget, I bought my first iRobot from the USA (with 240v conversion) because at the time they were much cheaper there even taking postage costs into consideration. Unfortunately that seller is no longer active on eBay, I just checked for you.

Then my second one was on Gumtree as someone bought it and their cat was freaked out, however I had the benefit of having owned the brand new unit for approx a year so knew what to expect, but with my original experience with the generic unit, I wouldn't buy one that didn't have a good returns policy. Ymmv though??

Good luck and hope you find a suitable model. ;-)

magnaconcordia · 15/06/2020 10:38

I might agree with WindyRose on cheapo brand vs iRobot. I first got iRobot and now eufy. I'm happy with eufy but my old iRobot may have performed better. I found eufy is easier for maintenance though.
