ouch notanO

we had some of this. during the recently ended Longest Building Project in the World Ever.

the room with the orangey floor now sports a nice fitted carpet.

they were lovely wide original boards too

my stupid ex builder cocked many things up, but the floors is one thing i am really miffed about. ah well! like you say, lifes too short and all that!

NotAnOtter · 08/09/2007 21:04

triple ouch!
dp and i on very tetchy terms after 3rd solid day of stripping

anyway its done

the vile product removed - a boring but unobtrusive varnish half applied...

both rooms look better but witholding judgement till its complete

regretting having such big bedrooms....dp very stern

we got it from here

it is green so safe for kids

it does not colour floors just brings out natural loveliness slightly darkens them, it is an oil not varnish; dries overnight, 2 coats

you put it on wipe it off takes no time

when it starts wearing which floors tend to do you can just do a bit at a time ie you don't have to sand etc all over again

they use it a lot in shops apparently for just this reason

really really recommend it

no pics of floor however and camera is currently on charger sorry

UCM · 08/09/2007 21:19

How did you get the colour out in the end NAO, I am very interested.

I do hope that it's now the colour you would like.

I suspect it will last a lifetime so even a month spent stripping will reap rewards

NotAnOtter · 08/09/2007 21:20

rats rats rats!

is it good with liquid spills?

Can you rewax with an extra posh organic free range terra firma home farm cottage style range available only from online posh places?

What a nightmare for you. I thought you couldn't go wrong with stripping and waxing.
We stripped and varnished because of ease and durability, but I know I should really have waxed and I regret it, even though they look great and a massive improvement.

Remember when all the furniture is back they might look better.

Cappuccino · 08/09/2007 21:23

we have a beech shelf above the bath in the bathroom and we did it with that, it gets wet and seems to have survived

Cappuccino · 08/09/2007 21:24

I have to say to anyone thinking of waxing/ varnishing floors, oil is much much much easier and better

imho

CescaD · 08/09/2007 21:26

We've just bought a place with v. orange floorboards (they have been tangoed). I plan to do what one of the UCM suggested and paint them all white. Love white painted floor boards. Although I am possibly mad with 2 cats (one v. prone to coughing up fur balls, t'other a v. messy eater) and baby and out-doorsie husband, plus live in muddy area between a river and a duck pond. Pass the mop.

NotAnOtter · 08/09/2007 21:26

spidermama the floors have been stripped then waxed - then stripped again 6 days later and now varnished with a colourless water based boring varnish
i wont LOVE them but i cannot bear a fake mellow golden look - at least they dont alter much with this varnish even if it does not exactly -enhance - them

in my daughters room i am whitewashing the boards ...might start a thread on how to do it as cannot find out online....any tips

It's such a horrible job too isn't it?

WendyWeber · 08/09/2007 21:29

OSMO Satin Polyx Oil £60 for 2.5L

WendyWeber · 08/09/2007 21:30

Actually compared with eg carpet or laminate that is cheap as chips but £60 for 2.5L of anything sounds shocking

WendyWeber · 08/09/2007 21:31

See here for floor paint, otter.

(Is green)

WendyWeber · 08/09/2007 21:32

They do Feng Shui paint too

UCM · 08/09/2007 21:34

With the white wash I would sand and use the bits to fill the gaps, then literally use some white paint thinned out with water and wipe it on, when you get the style you want, seal it.

I kid you not, this bedroom I had was gorgeous with the white painted floorboards. They were painted though, not washed IYKWIM.

NotAnOtter · 08/09/2007 21:34

yes spidey - i got sworn at today!!!

anyway - i just informed him may try the oil in top floor bedrooms and his response was 'thats good i can sand them all twice when you decide you dont like it'

nice paints wendy and good website - bit late but.......

need white WASH though...

OP posts:
UCM · 08/09/2007 21:35

or brush it on or roller etc

It will not matter as it will be absorbed so you might need a couple of coats until you get the desired effect.
