yes contact them - I said umpteen posts back

they may offer you something - I complained about the service I got from my pension call centre and got £20 for an apology!

worth a try ......

ledodgy · 03/09/2007 12:22

OOh Nadine are you a serial complainer? My mum was. She once even complained when she bought a tube of Signal toothpaste that had no red stripe through it and I got sent loads of free toothpaste , stickers and disclosing tablets.

oh dear, i do truly hate these terrible stains and varnish colours.

nao don't go darker, those colours are just as fake and nasty. the only ones which ever look nice are the sort of chestnutty ones but that might be a bit much for floor. it should mellow and you could try a coat of clear over the top.

def ring ronseal, yellow is not natural wood colour and they might have a fab product.

NadineBaggott · 03/09/2007 13:14

me?

complain?

all the time

NotAnOtter · 03/09/2007 17:26

How yellow is it?

Mumpbump · 03/09/2007 17:29

We did our pine doors with an antique pine that came out really orange, but has dulled down after a couple of years - either that or we've just got used to it! The pine will darken up in time, I am sure. We have twice now used clear satin varnish instead of wax because of the difference in the colour you get from waxes. Much more reliable, ime.

depressing

We've always used clear varnish - can you sand off the wax? Or am I being stupid?

NotAnOtter · 03/09/2007 17:42

we have always used varnish but was a bit tired of the plasticky feel and wanted a more natural look....

ho hum!

It would be a real pain, sanding off the wax. The only other thing I can think of is to see what the solvent for the wax is (probably spirit based?) and then buy a stain which has the same solvent and put that on top, then wax again?

If you have a Brewers near you, I'd go in and ask there as I have found that the sales staff tend to have hands-on experience so have a better idea of what is and isn't do-able.

NotAnOtter · 03/09/2007 20:02

a brewers Mumpbump????

Brewers' decorating shops. I don't know if they are nation wide, but they're certainly around the South East. They have very helpful staff.

If you don't have any near you, the other thing you could do is ring up the manufacturer of the wax and ask them what they would recommend to darken it up. A lot of manufacturers have helplines...

Pollyanna · 04/09/2007 09:27

i had this too - I hated the yellow finish. I had to get the floors re-stripped (by a Man not my dh) and ended up using a clear thing (not varnish but not wax either). It looks really nice. I'll try and work out what we used.

WendyWeber · 04/09/2007 10:33

We did ours with a satin finish varnish and they looked lovely - nice colour and not high gloss, just faintly shiny.

(They're underneath carpet now though, we had to have half of them replaced - big scar right across all the boards - and the old ones were really gappy and draughty)

we have always used varnish before
they are just bedrooms in 130 year old house
very trashed very manky very black boards- sanded to a nice peach glow and then varnish in not so 'natural'
hae ordered some oak and am intending a light coat of oak colour to 'tone down the mellow' ( to quote the lady at ronseal)

They are boys bedrooms and both have double beds in but still quite a lot showing

Trying to get things in persepctive not a skill i am practised in..........

The other thing about waxing is that it has to be maintained

NotAnOtter · 04/09/2007 15:02

well wendy - that actually pleases me as it means it may wear off ??? am i wrong?
