Furniture wax dries out after a while and the finish goes dry and dull - floor wax may possibly have something in it which makes it last longer but even so I would guess that it would go dull eventually (but not all at the same rate...if you really want to get rid and start again, re-sanding prob a better bet, although would the wax clog up the sanding sheets?)

From diyfixit

Sounds a bit grim

(I'm imagining all your kids bent over with their hands on the floor for 2 days now - a bit extreme I thought, it's not their fault )

WendyWeber · 06/09/2007 18:42

Had you thought about a lovely fitted carpet, otter?

NotAnOtter · 06/09/2007 20:31

Sadly yes wendy ! Could you send jocasta over for some advice!?

This is turning in to an odd 'talk board therapy' session with only ME listening but hey?

Now done odd golden oak colour and wait to se what the morning brings!

My experience of stripping floors is sadly familiar.

Dp spent a weekend sanding downstairs, then I went and bought a natural coloured varnish thinking that clear wood varnish would be too pale. Anyway I started and thought it looked lovely, so I carried on until I'd done a room.

I then stood up and looked at what I'd painted and realised I should have stirred the tin

The end of the room I'd started with was beautiful, and it gradually got yellower and yellower as I'd worked my way across the room.

I hated the yellow, and DP was pissed off beyond belief at me. In the end he had to resand the floor, and I re varnished in CLEAR!

NEVER, EVER AGAIN!!

NotAnOtter · 06/09/2007 20:41

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO depressing!! I have sanded so many many floors and v
been pleased with the varnish and just decided to WAX for a change!!!!! NEVER AGAIN!

life is too short for this sort of stress !

By far the best antique Pine wood stain I've used (and I tried loads to find the right one) was made by Liberon. I lovely golden brown, more brown than gold too. I think they do waxes too.

I used another stain (ran out of Liberon) on an Ikea coffee table I sanded down recently. It looked foul and rather yellow-pine but has toned down nicely over the 2 months since I did it.

NotAnOtter · 06/09/2007 20:50

i was looking at their website today soupy - will look again- i too am hoping colour will tone down as time draws on

NAO speaking from experience the antique wax is even more yellow than natural, i would be happy to send you a photo of my newly waxed pine shelves in Antique so you can compare if you like

NotAnOtter · 06/09/2007 21:12

are they nice bewildy???? can i handle it?

Small children, muddy hobnail boots. It's your only option.

daisyandbabybootoo · 06/09/2007 21:19

we used something to do our boards...it was a wax, but one that gives a varnish like seal, if that makes sense.

We did clear downstairs and antique pine upstairs and it looks really natural, not yellow or orange or anything. Just a nice natural finish. I can post photos if you like.

just had a quick google....it was this

UCM · 06/09/2007 21:20

Methinks that you can't even sand it off. The only option would be to use a scraper which will take off a couple of MM's. So a planer I suppose.

I could be wrong though, so don't quote me.

I had a flat once which had the floorboards of the bedroom painted white. You know nice black wrought iron bed, cream furry sheep, and all that.

They were in fact, very very nice. You could always consider this option.

WendyWeber · 06/09/2007 21:26

ROFL, daisy - that's what NAO used

daisyandbabybootoo · 06/09/2007 21:28

oops ....I should have opened the links earlier

It doesn't look yellow on our floor....honest!

daisyandbabybootoo · 06/09/2007 21:29

nope, not yellow

NotAnOtter · 06/09/2007 22:14
