The decluttering on thing a day thread - part 11

StealthNinjaMum · 19/01/2020 15:12

We’re still here.

After 10 threads my house still isn't tidy!

So join me and a lovely group of mumsnetters who simply get rid of one thing a day and report back. Gradually we’re developing good habits, reorganising ourselves, often improving our mental health and having friendly chatter along the way.

So newbies are welcome, just check in with your news and join in the general chat about recycling, organisation and housework.

Previous thread here.

ALSO many of us have set a target to get rid of 2020 items this year and will report on that.

OP posts:

DH has spotted the broken washing basket a
Has gone ‘missing’. Apparently it wasn’t broken. He hasn’t touched it in 9 years!

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 11/02/2020 07:14

Hello alex and hobbies!

3 empty bottles out from the end of the family bath - we are using up what's in the cupboard, so I think that counts! Emptied the fridge of proto-science projects - clearly, when I'm not on top form no-one else looks in there at all.

Big trip into town today to post an ebay parcel for DH (4 outs including Alexa! Hooray!), post a parcel to Xerox to recycle a printer cartridge (counting that, we only seem to need to do it every 5 years!) and swap a soda stream cartridge at Robert Dyas (so not an out).

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 11/02/2020 07:15

LittleMiss, if it wasn't broken (?), had you best have lent it to a friend...?

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 11/02/2020 07:18

Halcyon, meant to say re: chipped plates - my DC's Infant School had a plate smash stall at their Easter fayre some years ago. Could you ask about and see if anyone local does something like that? I think that one was run by the Rotary Club.

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 11/02/2020 07:19

Blast, sorry, that was @RoseReally with the plates. Reading too fast for this hour of the morning!

SydneyCarton · 11/02/2020 10:51

LittleMiss You have my sympathies - I remember having to sneak out a stag do T-shirt with the groom's face printed on it and some obscure personalised nickname that DP had for that weekend - the groom was divorced and engaged to someone else Hmm. To be fair, it was a short marriage, but even so, when are you ever going to wear that again even if they'd stayed together???

8 more outs today - 3 pairs of outgrown kids' shoes and 2 of DS's outgrown vests that are straining to do up under his nappy

Thanks, Willow!

Cleared the kitchen cupboards last week, found a tin from 2012 Blush

It had rusted through the bottom, I'm determined to get rid of things quicker from now on, it actually moved house with us.

Vinorosso74 · 11/02/2020 14:39

Sorted out my scarves. I have 2 in the charity bag-unworn gifts as they aren't colours I like. Another in the recycling as it's in a bit of a state! Am going to rotate wearing the others and decide if I can get rid of any others.
Pair of boots gone as they were falling apart (I could swear they'd gone a while ago...).
Few more bits of general crap binned.

Reastie · 11/02/2020 15:05

Still under the weather here but got rid of out of date stuff from kitchen cupboard (oldest date was 2014 Shock Blush ) and half way through the bathroom cabinet.

SandAndSea · 11/02/2020 15:41

I'm quite pleased to think that I've let go of around 3 good sized boxes of old stuff this week already, and it's only Tuesday!!

All the old tech has now left the house. This included about 7 mobiles, 1 camera and 1 laptop, with all the accompanying paraphernalia, from cables to a laptop case. They'd all been hanging around, full of photos etc, for far too long, so it feels great to be free of it all.

Also out: a tatty cat scratch post.

Littlemissdaredevil · 11/02/2020 19:25

The good news was I chucked the mouldy holey old clothes that were in the broken washing basket years ago!

pollyannaperspective · 11/02/2020 21:13

This evening I have decluttered a temp volunteering role to the newly appointed trustee, which is a great relief. Also means I can handover my 18 months of finance paperwork and the 4 files of archived documents. Will add to 2020 tally once handover completed.

SandAndSea · 12/02/2020 01:54

When I said upthread that all my old tech had gone out, I meant everything apart from the remaining floppy discs, their storage boxes and the special disc reader thingy for them. I'm now sitting here with a cuppa, slowly going through them all; copying, deleting etc. There are quite a lot of files on them which I'll need to sort out properly at some point, but at least it will be digital clutter now.

SandAndSea · 12/02/2020 02:35

Finished!

Out:
19 floppy discs.
1 fancy, lockable storage box. (Keys still to be found.)
1 simple storage box.

I'm going to keep the reader thing for a while longer, just in case I find any more discs.

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 12/02/2020 06:58

That's a late night commitment to decluttering, Sand. Sorry if you're not sleeping again.

I have commitment in principle from DH to ditch the stupid internet-of-things app-controlled radiator valves! I reached tipping point yesterday when it was 24 degrees in our bedroom and he said they couldn't be adjusted without me downloading an app onto my phone. I may have gone off on one a tiny bit about a) not being even slightly excited about using an app to control the radiators (I am not 15) and b) never having the leisure to get my phone out and do that. I want to note in passing it's too hot and turn the bloody thing down! Not put down whatever I'm holding / doing, get my phone out, fire up an app, change a setting, put phone away again then pick everything up again. I swear this internet-of-things bollocks was conceived and designed by someone who's never run a house / family.

Sorry. Rant over!

SheepSocks · 12/02/2020 08:18

Willow - I understand, my husband insisted on a remote controlled light for our bedroom. DD posted the remote down the back of the radiator six months again, and DH hasn't got round to fishing it out. What's wrong with a good old fashioned switch?

Emmerdaledramaqueen · 12/02/2020 09:28

I am drowning in clutter here!
This post has motivated me to begin the radical decluttering I have been thinking about and the keeping on top of it.
First mission sitting room drawers full of useful (useless) stuff that hasn't been looked at since they were put in!
Wish me luck!!

SandAndSea · 12/02/2020 11:32

Hi Emmer and welcome! You're in the right place. Smile

Thanks, Willow. On the plus side, I really like the quiet. I find I can get a lot done. I'm quite invigorated by all my decluttering at the moment too so not feeling too tired. That might change later though.

SandAndSea · 12/02/2020 14:13

I, stupidly, let DP see one of the storage boxes I was getting rid of and he wants to keep it! (Smh.)

The good news is though that I've found the keys for the other box.

I also took the opportunity to sort out my key stash.

Out:
2 padlocks & 7 keys.

Emmerdaledramaqueen · 12/02/2020 15:43

My achievement today is getting rid of a glass shelf from a display unit that hasn’t been in since I bought it five years ago!
Well done me .

Keiki · 12/02/2020 17:08

Todays outs:
2 cushions, one to charity one to bin (replaced)
1 misshapen pillow
1 kallax sized box of unused tights
3 brand new bras
1 carrier bag of bits and pieces
A dozen pairs of baby socks beyond passing on
5 sets of drawer dividers that have never fitted
1 empty cleaning fluid bottle

I have emptied and tidied one kitchen cupboard. No more space but I can reach things more easily. Might do another one later.

I have very nearly finished my part of the bedroom.

I used up one old bag of dried peas for dinner.

Oh, and you know you have too many bubble wands when you have to buy a cutlery holder to tidy them up! One out by combining the liquid.

gassylady · 12/02/2020 17:32

Three eBay items posted few more magazines into recycle pile. No major wins but chipping away none the less

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 12/02/2020 19:47

No decluttering for me today, but DH has just whizzed round the house replacing all the radiator valves. I do love him best of all.

Keiki · 13/02/2020 06:03

Did another kitchen shelf before bed yesterday and threw out about 20 cereal bars that were 4 years out of date Shock all so two whole packets of raisin snack packs as they didn't seem at their best anymore.
