Coffee machines - nespresso, tassimo or other

angel0071987 · 26/12/2019 09:01

My nespresso machine is giving up the ghost and as I have money to spend after Christmas I am looking to purchase new machine.
Should I buy another nespresso or tassimo or dolce gusto?
I like nespresso currently (was a wedding present so didn't choose it) as I can buy compatible pods from supermarkets and can make both espresso and long drinks so would like one that can do both of those. Opinions please. Thanks!

I had a tassimo years ago it was good and I liked the automatic-ness of it. I dont rate dolce gusto from using my boss's.

I've just got a nespresso with an aeroccino off so for £100 and I'm in love!

FlamingoAndJohn · 26/12/2019 09:04

Get a proper coffee machine. The waste from a nespresso is dreadful. Fresh coffee is no more work.

ExpletiveFairylighted · 26/12/2019 09:06

We've got a Tassimo at work and a Nespresso at home and honestly, the Tassimo coffee is rank compared to Nespresso (we only use original Nespresso pods). However we bought an aeropress to take camping and we use that at home instead now, once we have used up out current stock of pods we are getting rid of the Nespresso and not replacing with another machine (we have a separate milk frother).

We’ve just bought a Nespresso lattisimo and I live it! There is a brilliant offer on at the moment with loads of free pods

Depending on how much money you have, I'd encourage you to look into bean to cup machines. They are much more eco friendly. Or get a filter machine (mine has a thermos and timer, so coffee is ready when I get up) and a stovetop percolator or similar for espresso. Lasts forever and is probably same price or cheaper than a Nespresso.

I had a Tassimo then when it died bought a Nespresso with a milk foamer. I love it!

@flaming
I agree about the waste, but as I'm the only coffee drinker here I think I'd waste just as much with a cafetière?

MustardScreams · 26/12/2019 09:08

Get a bean to cup machine. Not anymore work, but the coffee is wildly superior. Plus you’re not contributing to tons of waste as no pods!

AntiHop · 26/12/2019 09:11

I use a bialetti stove top pot and a bodum milk frother. Slightly more effort than a machine, but with much less waste.

AntiHop · 26/12/2019 09:13

@Soontobe60 you can get a single cup cafetiere.

TheLittleBrownFox · 26/12/2019 09:17

Pod machine = pods and lids and cardboard sleeve. Huge energy cost in manufacturing fuelled by fossil fuels.

Cafetierre - 1 x coffee bag for 40 or so cups. Biodegradable bean grinds (chuck on grain or rinse down sink if only a small quantity at a time, helps keep plug unlocked).

Massive difference, unless you get a type of pod machine that is compatible with the metal refillable pods. But don't do that, just get a cafetierre Wink

FlamingoAndJohn · 26/12/2019 09:20

If you are worried about the coffee going stale just keep the beans in the freezer and grind from frozen.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 26/12/2019 09:25

If you get a Dolce Gusto machine the Aldi pods fit it and they're a fraction of the price.

Cynderella · 26/12/2019 16:46

Definitely bean to cup. We use ours several times a day every day. Once you have the settings to suit, you add beans to the hopper, fill water container and just press a button whenever you want coffee. The coffee grounds are just tipped into the compost caddy.

Beans are kept in an airtight jar next to machine. Not ideal but way better than pre-ground coffee. As others have pointed out, pods are very wasteful.

NotMeNoNo · 26/12/2019 16:50

You might want to look at an Aeropress too. We replaced our Tassimo machine with one, never looked back. Virtually no waste.

WalkAwaySugarbear · 26/12/2019 16:54

We have a bean to cup at home, so much better than the nespresso machine at work.

angel0071987 · 26/12/2019 20:10

The aeropress seems like a lot of work compared to pods? I have a toddler and newborn so can't spend time faffing around with beans and filters etc etc
One reason why I'd like a pod one. Fill water tank, out in pod and push button...

With a regular coffee one, fill water tank, add coffee, push button. No waste.

Cynderella · 26/12/2019 20:32

We've taken an Aeropress on holiday and it's great. Grinding the beans is the faff.

Bean to cup - even if there's three of us using it, coffee doesn't need refilling often and the water only has to be done once. Sooo much better than pods.

evilharpyinapeartree · 26/12/2019 20:57

I had a nespresso machine in the past and hated the packaging wastage. Now I have an aeropress, moka pot and V60 which I alternate depending on how the mood takes me, but the aeropress is by far the most used. It's far less faff than a nespresso machine (or a cafetiere or anything else) as you never have to descale it or wash the trays etc, and it takes seconds to push out the little hockey puck of used grounds and run it under the tap. It's a brilliant invention. The coffee it produces isn't true espresso (it lacks the crema) but it can be brewed to espresso strength or topped up with hot water/foamed milk to an americano or whatever.

I've posted in gushing terms about it before, they should be paying me commission. I love the bloody thing. I have a spare that lives at my mum's, and I take it everywhere if I'm staying overnight. Filters cost almost nothing.

In an ideal world you'd also grind your own beans for freshness. I don't do this because I can't be arsed. Sometimes I have a subscription from Pact for a few months which is lovely, but when I'm on a money saving drive I buy a single origin coffee (usually Ethiopian) from Aldi which is really very nice.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 26/12/2019 20:58

The kids are so bad for the environment. At least with grinding your own beans you can compost.

evilharpyinapeartree · 26/12/2019 20:58

Also the aeropress produces much nicer coffee than the nespresso machine ever did. I always found it far too weak to top up to an americano, I'd have to make a double and use two pods.

Also also it's a LOT cheaper to buy coffee in bags than in pods.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 26/12/2019 20:58

Pods!! But I suppose kids are too.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 26/12/2019 21:04

we have an aeropress. It's brilliant and easy to use. Pods are really environmentally unfriendly

Flurgle · 27/12/2019 09:49

Also an aeropress fan. It’s really quick and easy and produces excellent coffee. I use ready ground coffee and it takes no more time than any other hot drink. I have a milk frother too for fancy coffee.
