Coffee machines - nespresso, tassimo or other

angel0071987 · 26/12/2019 09:01

My nespresso machine is giving up the ghost and as I have money to spend after Christmas I am looking to purchase new machine.
Should I buy another nespresso or tassimo or dolce gusto?
I like nespresso currently (was a wedding present so didn't choose it) as I can buy compatible pods from supermarkets and can make both espresso and long drinks so would like one that can do both of those. Opinions please. Thanks!

I had a Tassimo and I loved it however I stopped using it as it was so wasteful (they all are really, all the single use plastic) although I think for a nespresso you can buy a reusable pod. I do really miss it though, it was so easy and quick! Also the pods are very expensive but again I think it's that way for all of them. The drinks were nice though.

grinder and an aeropress; total about £25 from ebay plus occasional packs of paper filters for £2 or so. Coffee beans in a bag from Aldi. Done with much less waste than the 'I hate the next generation' pods.

BuffaloCauliflower · 29/12/2019 15:30

I have a Delonghi Icona type. No pods, terrible things, no faff, no filters. Add coffee, press button, done.

LidlDonkey · 29/12/2019 15:34

We had a bean to cup machine in a holiday home we stayed in. It cost about £800 apparently. It was a right faff, and the coffee was nowhere near as good as my stovetop pot.

I think all coffee machines are a waste of money and plastic.

For a single cup of decent coffee with the least hassle you can't beat a filter cone with a paper filter.

cheesewitheverything · 29/12/2019 16:01

Aeropress here as well if it's just one cup you want (otherwise I'd use a cafetiere) and what I like is that the coffee is really hot. Nespresso machines never make it very hot I think.

I have been given a pod machine, and we like it. I also have a v60 and like that too.

I recycle as much as I can.

Wavey123 · 03/01/2020 17:20

For anyone who didn’t know, Nespresso can send you bags to fill with the used pods and once full you send it off to them to recycle it (it’s all free)

ExpletiveDelighted · 03/01/2020 20:32

Yes, we do that with our pods, just drop them off at a Collect+ shop. We're still getting rid of it once we've used up the last set of pods though.

Get a coffee machine nespressoes which are soo bad for the environment.

june2007 · 03/01/2020 20:37

Should say not Nespresso.

maidenover · 03/01/2020 20:47

Buy something without pods as the waste they create is totally unnecessary. I have a small filter machine, it’s easy to use and I can use any coffee I want in it.

silentpool · 03/01/2020 20:47

I have a Gaggia, which is great. Nespresso type of machines are very wasteful. Plus the coffee tastes way better.

Al1cewith2020vision · 03/01/2020 20:52

Tassimo and dolce gusto are beverage machines rather than coffee makers.

Lavazza or Nespresso coffee is better but PP are right about the environmental impact and cost.

Al1cewith2020vision · 03/01/2020 20:54

Sorry, hit send too soon. Bean to cup or filter is mych cheaper per cup & uses less of the planets resources.

ClientListQueen · 03/01/2020 20:58

I just got a clever dripper and really like it so far

RomaineCalm · 03/01/2020 21:22

Bean to cup here. Our DeLonghi machine has been going for about 6 years so even though it initially cost about £400 it doesn't owe us anything now.

Get up. Fill up water. Press for coffee. Drink.

Apart from buying beans and descaling every month or so it's easy and far better for the environment than pods.

ExpletiveDelighted · 03/01/2020 21:38

With bean to cup do you just put in the beans you need for your cup or do they have a big hopper that you keep full? One reason we've never really considered one is that I only drink decaff and DH only full caff which is easy with the Aeropress (or indeed pod machines).

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 03/01/2020 21:42

I've had a cafetiere and milk frother. A bean to cup. Stove top and an aeropress

Just bought an nespresso latissima and I absolutely love it. Have 3 small chidren and just need something faff free. Can put all the bits in the dishwasher. Fed up washing the milk frother. Great purchase

RomaineCalm · 03/01/2020 21:51

@ExpletiveDelighted - we both drink the same coffee so keep the hopper full but you could just add the beans for your own cup.

ExpletiveDelighted · 03/01/2020 21:54

Thanks @RomaineCalm. We probably won't do it as we don't have much counter space but worth knowing.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 03/01/2020 21:59

I have a bean to cup & now wouldn't use anything else. I love lattes so microwave a cup of milk, then put cup under outlet & press button for freshly ground coffee. I also use a separate frother even though my machine has an option to froth with hot water & steam. 2 minutes & I have a beautiful frothy latte. Perfect way to start the morning. The coffee machine gets used more than the kettle! Just keep the water & bean hopper topped up & it has self cleaning programs. I can change the strength & volume of coffee very easily. Definitely more versatile than a pod machine, and far cheaper to buy beans than pods.

lilgreen · 03/01/2020 22:02

I have a Delonghi espresso machine with milk steamer. It’s great and no plastic waste. If I can’t be bothered to wash up the milk jug etc I heat some milk in the cup in the microwave then just top up with espresso from the machine if I want a milky coffee.

angel0071987 · 04/01/2020 08:21

Thank you all for your inputs. I did look into the aeropress but in the end settled for another nespresso machine. With two young full on children I just wanted soemthing I can shove pod in, stick cup under and push a button and forget about. It's a better model than I had previously and the coffee is great (at drinkable temperature so i don't put boiling cup down and forget about it!!!) and I recycle pods and packaging. Much appreciated all opinions Grin

I have Nespresso. I only use Nespresso pods so no plastic waste, the used pods go back to Nespresso for recycling. My current machine cost me £1!

Check out the subscription plan. £1 for the machine then £35 per month which you can spend online or in boutique on pods, accessories etc. After a year you stop paying but the credit is still there to use for another year!
