Thinking of a pod coffee machine..

Does anyone know which generic supermarket coffee pods (such as Tesco Asda lidl etc) are compatible with which machines also how do you rate the machines....I'm old school I love a black coffee, milk gives me stomach ache.. my husband loves all the nicer coffees like cappuccino late and coffees with flavours so would be a ideal gift for him. In our town we have Tesco asda lidl and morrisons and aldi currently being built so either of them supermarkets would be preferable. Thanks in advance

Tesco are doing a £29 Dolce Gusto machine. Not sure about supermarket pods, but seems a really cheap price for a machine.

I have the Nescafé Dulce Gusto and I hate it. It makes "hot" drinks but not boiling hot ones. When the drink is made it's the same temperature as a cup of tea that's been sitting for five minutes, I like my drinks boiling hot!

The latte, cappuccino etc pods contain powered milk so they have that vending machine kind of taste. The hot chocolate is lovely.

My parents and my sister love their machines though so I think I'm just odd liking my drinks steaming hot!

I have a nespresso and love it. It has lasted constant daily use for the past five years. The pods just contain coffee and you can get one with a milk frothier for your husband. All the major supermarkets plus Aldi and Lidl sell the pods.

Why not get an Italian style moka cafetière that you put on the hob, much greener and no plastic waste, and makes really good coffee with crema on top.

My son has just had the Dolce Gusto one and loves it. B&M do the pods cheaper but Asda tend to have them on a lot at 3 boxes for £10. They do their own asda version too at under £3 .

Make sure you know how/where to recycle or compost the pods after use. They are a known to be "difficult" to recycle, and vary in what they are made of - some aluminium, some plastic.

As far as recycling goes I live in wales and we ranked 2nd in the world for recycling in 2017

I'm not sure where we stand now but local authority are pretty on the ball with it, they collect food waste for composting every week aswell as pretty much everything to recycled, i also compost a little myself. I was concenred with the pods themselves but he local authority are fine with them they never reject my neighbours. Which is why I'm not concerned anymore with that side of the machine.

The LA are that good my black bin that is emptied once a month is only ever half full....and its mainly dog poo which is in biodegradable bags, as that bin goes to landfill so I try to do my best there also I dont know if it would help at all though it makes me feel better for putting it in them though

I'll do some more research into which machine is more suitable for our budget in the long run.

I think coffee pod makers are getting the hint and I expect them to all be making green/greener pods soon.

Hi, if you were happy to order your coffee pods online, I would suggest a senseo machine. We get the amazon own brand version of the pods, which are basically made of the same stuff as teabags, and can be composted. We get 90 pods for about £7 delivered at the moment which is really good value. The machine we have (senseo switch) also does filter coffee, and it's nice to have the choice. Both options make a lovely cup of coffee.

We have a Nespresso machine and I do like the coffee. I have found that allegedly compatible capsules are not always - plastic ones worse than aluminium and that automatic machines are more temperamental than the manual ones.

If you want it for black coffee you just need a bean to cup machine. Really wouldn't waste the money on pods.

Hiya. I live in wales too and they don’t collect our empty nespresso pods. Is your neighbour emptying the used coffee out and sticking them in the metal recycling?

We have a nespresso machine. One that uses the aluminium pods. Nespresso will collect the pods for recycling when they deliver the next lot.

You can get a stainless steel refillable capsule for all the different machines now on Amazon and save money.

Hiya @cherry321 yes she empties them out and washes before putting them in. We wash everything... we are crazy recycling ladies we even take paper labels off jars and tins, our husbands make fun of us...

Personally I don’t think the pod machines produce a good quality coffee. We had one several years ago and three relatives have got various versions currently (including one eye wateringly expensive model) and to be honest they all have that same vending machine, slightly bitter taste. If you really like your coffee I wouldn’t bother with a pod machine.

I will try that. I love the nespresso coffee but they have never collected my empties and I get major guilts.

I’ve gone off my nespresso and am back on the stove top. Partly the below point par coffee, partly the pods seemed so wasteful (I bought some of the refillable ones to use and they made good coffee into shit coffee(

bean to coffee machines make a much better coffee than pod ones and are more enviromentally friendly as you dont use a chunk of plastic every cup, we have the delonghi one and it makes super proper coffee
