Which vacuum cleaner would you recommend?

Hi everyone!

We're making plans to research, test and review a new round of vacuum cleaners (corded and cordless), so we'd love to hear which products you'd recommend.

If you've used (and loved!) a particular product recently, then please do tell us about it. This will help us to create a shortlist of vacuum cleaners to put to the test.

Also, if you have any tips on what we should be looking for in a vacuum cleaner then please do share your comments on this thread - we'll then add your tips and advice to our updated buyer's guide.

Thank you!

Miele cat and dog.

Onynx · 16/10/2019 00:06

Miele Cat & Dog and the Miele Bagless were fab -great suction etc until they broke and I had to encounter their rage- inducing, appalling 'customer service'. For that reason I moved back to Dyson &bought a V10 cordless which has been amazing so far.

Claricethecat45 · 16/10/2019 00:15

Shark lift away- top for carpets - but i find it heavy..no one else seems to though

I find it not great for hard floors and I have black slate so the headlights show every bit of dust and hair (2 dogs) but it doesn't pick it up well at all and I always have to damp mop and try again.

lazyspoon · 16/10/2019 01:18

Gtech multi

EmmaGrundyForPM · 16/10/2019 06:37

We have a Shark Liftaway which is brilliant. Before that we had a Dyson which was fine but the Shark is so much better

LillianGish · 16/10/2019 07:02

Henry all the way - long flex (essential), powerful, easy to move around (though I live in an apartment- maybe awkward on stairs) and I’ve had it forever.

viktoria · 16/10/2019 07:08

Had a few Dysons years ago. Wanted to believe they were good, but they were actually rubbish.
Now we have a Miele, which we have had for years and it's brilliant.
Would NEVER ever get another Dyson. Mainly because they are useless and don't last. But also out of political reasons - because of Dyson's stand on Brexit (and moving his business to Singapore).

MancaroniCheese · 16/10/2019 07:13

Roomba is just bloody amazing. Ok it can’t get into corners and can’t do stairs but the house gets cleaned way more than it would without it as there’s no way I would vacuum daily.

DogsApo · 16/10/2019 08:40

I really like the Shark but ours keeps falling over and seems to be too light. Henry survived our building work but is a bit cumbersome. I loved our old Dyson but it wouldn't have coped with builder's dust and broke so often we had to have a backup.

MangoSalsa · 16/10/2019 11:12

Hetty or Henry

Joerev · 16/10/2019 11:52

Oh man. We’ve got 2 dysons. Cordless. And non cordless. Both are shit!!!! One stinks of vomit when it turns on. Sent back to dyson countless time. To be told. It’s normal?!? Had a part that meant it didn’t work. Took dyson nearly 7 sent backs to work it out. Shocking. The other one is just awful too. Same thing. Starts to smell. I clean the filters every week. Parts have broken off. Would never buy one

Contemplating a miele or a shark.....

lovelilies · 16/10/2019 12:08

Following as my 5 year ild Miele Cat and Dog isn't doing very well. Hairs always tangled on brush bar and suction isn't great any more

yumscrumfatbum · 16/10/2019 12:18

I have a dyson, had it for years. Had free replacement parts twice. It is heavy and cumbersome. I'll be looking at sonething cordeless next time

Kraggle · 16/10/2019 14:04

Place marking as we’re looking at getting a cordless vacuum. We have Lino and laminate downstairs and carpet on the stairs and upstairs, mainly want it for the stairs so needs to be powerful but light.

frazzledasarock · 16/10/2019 14:06

Miele cat and dog. God do I love it.

onemorecakeplease · 16/10/2019 18:03

Gtech k9 cordless upright - new purchase and so far very good
We have a Dyson upright - very good but getting a bit fed up of falling over the cable!
Dyson hand held - godsend for crumbs and little jobs. So powerful

Dimsummummy · 16/10/2019 18:43

I’m a cleaner and I find;

All mieles are brilliant
All Henry’s are very good
Dysons are 50/50 (even if 2 people have the same model) some are fab, some have pole problems
The shark is great in upright mode, but the removable handheld bit is not great, although the 2 batteries as standard is handy. The roller does block (despite claims it’s less likely to)
The gtech is overall better than the shark (as the handheld bit is better) but again need 2 batteries for whole house
Vaxs’ are usually adequate

If I was purchasing a vacuum it would be;

  1. Miele (if budget allowed)
  2. Henry (if couldn’t afford a Miele)

Hth

Jenniferturkington · 16/10/2019 19:31

I have a Henry. I can’t stand him tbh, he topples over and then gives me a smug look 👀 and he’s a bugger to get up and down stairs.
I’m going to get a cordless shark when I spot a good deal.

GooseFeather · 16/10/2019 19:45

@Snog we have a Vax Blade 2, and it is great. It has really good battery life - the rate limiting step on using it for our 5 bed house is it's dust bucket. But most of the time, I am using it for 'top up' cleans, not whole house.

We also have a Dyson corded thing for the weekly big clean, and by contrast, it is shit. It will go as soon as I can justify replacing it, and no Dyson product will ever come through my door again. It's predecessor was fab, but the build quality and reliability have tanked.

Bambooclock · 16/10/2019 20:29

Definitely Miele cat and dog. Been going 10 years now and still awesome.

Melroses · 16/10/2019 20:46

I have a dyson. It sucks better than the old one, but it isn't as good - can't stretch the hose up the stairs any more and the tools are not as good. It is still an 'old' model though as it does not have the irritating 'ball'

What I really, really want is a Roomba Smile

MyNameIsJane · 16/10/2019 20:50

I got a Titan vacuum cleaner for the building work we have been doing here. It’s amazing and my dyson cordless feels pathetic in comparison.

grafittiartist · 16/10/2019 20:58

Currently vacuum shopping so this is super helpful!
Excellent timing - thanks!

Snog · 16/10/2019 21:07

@GooseFeather thank you, that's the model I was considering - have you had it long?

Shockers · 16/10/2019 21:08

Miele. It has gone wrong once in 6 years, and they replaced the whole top of it for about £60. It’s powerful and easy to lie flat to get under beds and coffee tables.
