If I've had a Miele washing machine will I be disappointed with a Bosch?

I've had a Miele for 18 years,it's still going strong and never once played up or needed fixing ( touch wood!)

It's a basic one as old Mieles tend to be ,knobs to turn and basic digital display. 30 min quick wash which I use for most things except bedding and towels.

I'm thinking ahead and when it does finally go I want to know which machine to get. When we got our machine we were loaded as it was pre kids ,double income. I like the fact it's so reliable and dh has a thing for white goods and doesn't mind spending on something that gets used so often.

I keep hearing that Mieles aren't that great any more,is that right, anyone have any experience of customer service with them?

Are they still the best or have other machines improved hugely these days? What about a Bosch,we have a Bosch induction and it's great.

Has anyone regretted not getting a Miele? They are SO much money and we don't have anywhere near the income we used to have so cost is a factor but reliability is the main issue as far as dh is concerned.

Fuck me, I can't believe what a boring post this is, sorry BlushGrin

Miele and Bosch are the same company, different badge. I'm happy with all my Bosch stuff. (Gas hob, ovens, extractor, washing machine, dishwasher).

LoafofSellotape · 01/07/2019 14:34

Are they really? That's interesting.

I need to present this in a knowledgeable way to dh as he's just buy a Meile straight away a d I'm really not sure it's worth it these days.

I love my Bosch hob it's fabulous and been going strong for 10 years.

Miele and Bosch are not the same company. Bosch, Siemens and Need are.

To put it in perspective, for a £1k Miele you could buy 4 mid range washing machines, each one being an improvement on the last as technology trickles down and machines become more commonplace. And if you are only really using the 30 min cycle, you sure as heck don't need to spend Miele money to do that reliably!

Our last, high end Bosch lasted about 5 and a half years of heavy use - cloth nappies and frequent overloading probably contributed to it's demise. But it probably did as many washes as our previous cheap as chips Hotpoint that lasted 13 years.

NotAnotherJaffaCake · 01/07/2019 14:35

Need should be Neff. DYAC.

LoafofSellotape · 01/07/2019 14:41

5.5 years doesn't sound reliable at all to me even with heavy use!

I have had both over the past 40 years and never really rated Miele. My SIL and her DS both have everything Miele and replace every few years to keep up with the latest trends 🙄. You wouldn't believe the number of occasions both have had to call Miele for repairs so my impression is they are certainly not massively reliable any longer.

To be honest, I was much more of a Bosch fan and had everything Bosch. However, certainly with washing machines, I do feel the quality standards have dropped - probably due to outsourcing - and won't be buying another. My next washing machine will probably be Samsung or LG both of which seem much more advanced and reliable.

FrogFairy · 01/07/2019 17:59

I would go for another Miele but one of the cheaper models.

There a couple that are less than £600 and several models under £700

LoafofSellotape · 01/07/2019 18:28

I had a look at prices, they're cheaper than they used to be,that could be an option too Frog

For most machines, anything past 3-4 years now is considered good 😮

Things just genuinely are not what they were and in order to keep prices as competitive as possible (and to keep consumers buying) reliability is not what it was, a lot of machines are now made in a way that they can't be repaired and instances where they can it's £££

Miele is still generally regarded as a cut above (although I have a Miele Hoover and both it, and Miele CS were shit).

Bosch/Siemens/Neff aren't in the Miele category but still above the likes of LG, Samsung (Samsung also majorly shit) and Zanussi etc

Then down to the lowest end Hotpoint/Indesit, Candy/Hoover.

Most machines are only made by 2 or 3 manufactures now, with a name badge, build quality and price to suit the section of the market they're aiming for.

forkfun · 02/07/2019 18:35

For a washing machine, I'd always go for Miele. Other appliances not necessarily, but their washing machines are so much better. My current one is 12 years old and still going strong. And Miele are not the same company as Bosch, nor do they manufacture in the same factories as other companies.

e1y1 · 02/07/2019 18:38

@ I promise you Samsung are anything but reliable (they are probably the worst machine I've had - out of LG, Bosch, and Whirlpool)

Nothing more than trendy tat that is aimed at the ones who go for looks/gadgets and gimmicks. Had 2 of them and the 12kg top end one was completely and unitedly dead and unrepairable at the grand old age of 7 months! The other one lasted around 2 years and dealing with Samsung customer service is like being in the 7th circle of hell

My LG was brilliant though and is one I would still have now if it weren't gifted to Dsis (she could make much better use of its 12kg load capacity than me).

PickAChew · 02/07/2019 18:39

Bosch/Siemens are great, so long as you stay off the bottom end.

MrsHardbroom · 02/07/2019 18:45

I've got an AEG washer and I love it! Just to
throw another option into the mix. It's two years old so I can't comment on longevity but it does the job really well

WatcherOfTheNight · 02/07/2019 18:50

Never had miele but have had HotPoint,Zanussi and LG.

My LG has been well put through its paces ,it's used every day, usually 3-4 loads and Is only now about to go caput after 11 years without a problem.
I will definitely be buying another .

The other 2 ... nothing but trouble!

bringbacksideburns · 02/07/2019 19:16

I've had three Bosch machines in twenty odd years! Kids are now 16 and 18. Used a he'll of a lot, at least once a day on that time.

Wouldn't buy anything else.
Latest one is a combined dryer which cost a lot and I treated myself to because I was sick of air drying in the winter.

GimmieTheCoffeeAndNooneDies · 04/07/2019 10:42

With my experience of Bosch, dishwasher broke down after 2 years 2 months, and Bosch customer service not giving a flying fuck (until I went on social mefia), I'd never buy a Bosch appliance again.

It was an expensive dishwasher, and the performance wasn't all that. My (very experienced and highly qualified) engineer friend says it looks like they just shove in cheap generic parts sourced from China and hope for the best. You are probably just as well off with a Beko.

SkintAsASkintThing · 04/07/2019 10:46

We have an ancient Miele. And when that dies I will replace with another Miele.........ours is the basic, cheapest model and never let us down. They aren't even that expensive really. And the build quality pisses all over Bosch.

Bluerussian · 04/07/2019 10:49

Not at all. Bosch are as good as Miele. However most washing machines are pretty good these days, none last forever. I have mine on practically every day and sometimes two or three loads in a day, takes a lot of punishment.

Had my Bosch for two years I think.

Celebelly · 04/07/2019 10:59

Our Bosch is great and used daily (cloth nappies and spitty up baby!). Beko are surprisingly good too - I bought a Beko tumble drier and have been so pleasantly surprised by how good it is (again heavily used). We had a Hotpoint in our previous house, which is now rented out, and it was bloody awful. The 10-year-old Bosch dishwasher there is still going strong though!

Todamhottoday · 04/07/2019 11:06

Had 2 Bosch (left first one in house i sold) both are so so IMO, and I did not buy the basic model. One I have now is 10 years old with light use, and Im not that impressed with the wash quality for how much I paid. It also feels flimsy as in the door is quite light when you close it the plastic is not that rubust as the last one.,

Used a Siemens (top of the range) and that was too complicated again for a ok wash.

And I tried, pod/liquid/powder and so and it never really changed

Best ever was a Zanussi washer dryer bought in 1987, that lasted 18 years, fab machine but would not buy one now.

I think machines are not as good as they used to be sadly, but I would not pay £££ for a washing machine.

TaxiPlease · 04/07/2019 12:14

Our 18-year-old Miele washing machine finally died last year. At that point we'd just spent a fortune redecorating so couldn't really justify buying another Miele and went for one of the (higher end) Siemens models (iQ700). As previous posters said, Siemens and Bosch are made by the same company (all designed by BSH). The machines are exactly the same just with different logos and colours. So far, we are very happy with the Siemens but I suppose only time will tell.

Miele machines definitely win (or at least used to be - haven't seen the inside of a current one) in the build quality stakes, though. My DP is a mechanical engineer and felt the Miele was a better, practically indestructible design (lots of sturdy metal parts inside where others use plastic, all individual bits fairly easy to replace) and just the superior piece of engineering all around.

What did you decide OP ? Mine now sounds like it's about to take off when it spins.
I'm deal hunting!

user1498572889 · 13/07/2019 20:45

If you decide not to get a Miele I would go for Siemens. I have both I use my Miele for everyday washing and I use my Siemens for larger loads. Siemens machines come with a 5 year warranty and there are some good deals on Miele at the moment extended warranties and cash backs.

LoafofSellotape · 13/07/2019 21:11

It will be the cheapest Miele but hoping this one will still keep going a while longer!
