Great hacks you've used

I saw this on the DM
To get stuck on burnt bits off oven trays or dishes soak in fabric conditioner - I used Comfort.
It worked a treat.

If baking pavlova use a "magic oven liner" you've cut to size. The pavlova just peels off.
No baking dish required.
Or use a silicone cake mould.

Have you any great hack ?

@Gingerkittykat neither have worked. I'm pretty ashamed of it. Gonna buy some black harpic today and get at it.

ooooohbetty · 22/06/2019 08:56

Oh no @bobbiepin. That coke remedy has been going round for years. I honestly thought it was true

Meckity1 · 22/06/2019 13:20

Cola didn't work for me, but our loo gets very dark very quickly and I'm a slattern. I dump a load of white vinegar in regularly and it takes the limescale off really quickly. I haven't worked out how to squirt under the rim as there is no way I am putting vinegar in a bottle that used to hold bleach, so other days I use toilet cleaner (which doesn't work as well).

I'm going to try the harpic black.

Meckity1 · 22/06/2019 13:20

To add - I use a loo brush, but I soak that regularly in vinegar as well.

TroysMammy · 22/06/2019 13:23

Baby oil on chrome.

@Gingerkittykat bleach is alkali, the opposite of acid! And a heck of a lot worse for the world than coke, citric acid etc. Limescale is also alkali, so the acid dissolves it. Bleach just whitens it.

PoppadomPeach · 22/06/2019 19:43

Re Limescale: I used the Harpic Tablets (black box) - two down the toilet (leave the lid up), leave overnight, quick scrub in the morning with a toilet brush and most (if not all) of the limescale and staying was gone.
It was like magic!

When cleaning your oven stick shelves and glass in dishwasher on the hot cycle. Half way through take them out and Brillo pad them, all comes off easily and then back in the dishwasher for shiny shelves!!

Any tips for an off coloured white bath? The sides are still white but the bottom has now went a bit brown-y.

supercee · 22/06/2019 21:30

On second glance it's more grey. Looks water marked..?

RubberTreePlant · 23/06/2019 06:05

Is it enamel or plastic @supercee ?

Nextphonewontbesamsung · 23/06/2019 06:20

The grey on the bottom of your bath is limescale. Spray with limescale remover like Viakal (or just use neat white vinegar) and use a thin plastic scraper to scrape it off. I used an old credit card. Slow job but very satisfying.

RuggyPeg · 23/06/2019 06:24

Cleaning an iron with paracetamol - hold the paracetamol in tweezers so you don't burn your fingers

sashh · 23/06/2019 06:26

If you run out of dishwasher powder you can use clothes washing powder for a coupleofwashes. It doesn't have the rise stuff so you can't use it indefinitely.

Keep cling film in the fridge it is easier to get off the roll - I got that one here.

Plastic or ceramic? my mum used to use denture cleaning tablets on anything ceramic from cups to well anything. I think she also used it on net curtains.

If it's limescale, white vinegar is good.

So if your crockery is looking a little stained, fill the sink with water, put a couple of sterilising tabs in and leave for a couple of hours.

A couple of old ones.

If you ladder your tights a dot of clear nail varnish will stop the ladder spreading.

A scuffed who can get a temporary shine from rubbing the inside of a banana peel on it.

If you are really short of cash and ladder tights you cannot afford to replace, then cut the laddered leg off, when you ladder a second pair do the same. You can now wear the two legs as a pair of tights.

SeaSidePebbles · 23/06/2019 06:30

All my bedding and towels are white, but I live in a very hard water area and frankly, I’m yet to find something that will bleach them back to sparkly white again. Does anybodu have any tips? At the moment, I just replace them 🤷🏻‍♀️

sashh · 23/06/2019 07:10

SeaSide

Try the denture cleaning tabs.

The very old fashioned way was to spread them out on a sunny day to let the sun bleach them.

Also 'dyegone' it's designed to remove dye, as the name says but is useful for whites.

margaritasbythesea · 23/06/2019 07:23

Does anyone know how to clean sealant? We've just bought a house and the sealant around the bottom of the shower has turned orange.

My favourite cleaning tool is an old toothbrush. It gets right in every crevice.

Oven Pride is genuinely miraculous on ovens, even ones you think are irredeemable.

supercee · 23/06/2019 08:05

@RubberTreePlant @sashh it's (old) enamel.

sashh · 23/06/2019 08:24

Spruce

Try the denture cleaning tabs, put some water in the bottom off the bath and add steradent (or other brand) leave overnight.

White vinegar - put on cotton wool and cover the seal - that will clean it and remove limescale but if the colour is something else you might need to reseal.

Bobbiepin · 23/06/2019 08:31

Black harpic - WOW! Wish I'd taken before & after pics now. Thanks!!

DustyDoorframes · 23/06/2019 08:34

@SeaSidePebbles wash on 60 or higher with bio powder (I use Lidl's, Which likes it)- the powder is much better at whites than liquid. Then line dry on a sunny day. It might take a few rounds to get them white white white, but if you stick to that plan you won't need to replace.

DustyDoorframes · 23/06/2019 08:37

@margaritasbythesea that will be limescale too- loo cleaner on it and then a good rub down might do it (easier than vinegar as it's thick- do try a small corner first though in case it erodes it!). A paste of Citric acid powder might work too.
Off to get some harpic black for my stained downstairs loo...

supercee · 23/06/2019 08:49

Thank, I'll try the denture tablets!

Another vote for the HG mould spray, especially on bathroom grout. My dad said it was a long toothbrush, bleach and elbow grease job. Skoosh the spray on, leave for a few hours with the window open and voila, good as new. Magic stuff. Worked around my kitchen sink too.
