Why does every piece of clothing this family owns need to be washed at 40 synthetic

Every piece of washing seems to require washing at 40 degree synthetic cycle with a slow spin.
What is the point in all the other cycles on the washing machine then?
Would be interested to know if everyone else follows the label advice (like me). Or do you have your own rules? Which programmes do you use then?

i use 40 degrees for t-shirts and stuff
50 for dh's work shirts/boxer shorts etc
60 for bedding
95 for towels and t towels and cleaning cloths

Have never done a 95 degree wash! Not sure our towels would survive it!

I use several cycles. 30/40 degree cotton fast spin for most clothes. 40 degrees with extra rinse for ds's clothes. 60 for bedding and a boil wash once a week/fortnight for towels (I can fit quite a few in). I don't think I own anything that needs a slow spin except for my bras.

I use 40 fast spin for just about everything except

speed wash - in emergency
90 for poo/vomit/something else that needs boiling.

Thanks for the replies! Will have to experiment with my new washing machine when it comes!
