Fan oven packed up. As a temporary measure are halogen ovens any good

Morning the fan on my oven has gone. Not sure if it's worth getting repaired. Will get a new freestanding electric cooker but need to get the present worktops cut for a bigger cooker. Any recommendations on a halogen oven please

We have a JML halogen and it's great for small quantities and for foods that do not require long cooking times

hannah1992 · 20/04/2019 14:42

Is it the fan that has gone or the element? If you didn't want to mess about buying a halogen oven then having to buy new cooker etc you can pick up parts like fans and elements on eBay cheap and just replace yourself. Surprisingly easy to do.

I replaced element in my fan oven by watching a YouTube video

DramaAlpaca · 20/04/2019 14:46

I was coming on to say what Hannah said. Are you sure it's the fan? Can you hear anything when you turn on the oven? If it's the element it's an easy enough DIY job, we've replaced the element on ours twice very cheaply & easily.

Keepaddingpets · 20/04/2019 14:55

Like the others have said. Google is your friend for repairing. I did my element - very easy and cheap!!

Londongirl888 · 20/04/2019 17:43

Thanks Marcus, Hannah, Drama And Keep. I am most impressed with you all I will check out eBay it is worth a try. It is a Zanussi. You are making me wonder as I can hear the fan. But it is tepid heat so maybe it is the element you couldn't cook anything. Thanks

It sounds like the element then if you can hear the fan. If you can't find your part on eBay try espares online, they usually have what you need.

Londongirl888 · 20/04/2019 22:48

Thanks Drama will check eBay and give it a go. Will probably have to use the halogen oven till I get this sorted. I am looking forward to trying though

we have this one It gets used virtually every day at some point. Depends how many you are cooking for, but I roast a chicken and while it's resting, the potatoes go in. It's a decent size -about the only thing I don't cook in it are things like shepherd's pie, although I do use it to brown the top.
Hope you get your cooker sorted soon.

MadameJosephine · 20/04/2019 23:13

I came on to say the same thing as PPs. I thought my oven had packed in a few years ago but rather than replacing it I took a punt and spent £20 on a new element and replaced it myself by following a video on you tube. Still going strong

Londongirl888 · 21/04/2019 08:22

Bananas and Madame thanks both very useful. Am trying to find model no. And will definitely order the element. Will you tube how to do it. Fingers crossed.

My DH has replaced the element in our cooker too .

WRT halogen , I have one from JML, it is really handy for a small item or cooking Yorkshire puddings (high heat , I can watch them cook ) . I can get 8 Aunt Bessies Cook-at-Home ones on the rack.

I would recommend the hinged lid in the link, mine doesn't have and its quite heavy to lift .

Fluffycloudland77 · 22/04/2019 09:57

I got one years ago, only use the big oven for pizzas now. Love it.

Londongirl888 · 22/04/2019 10:21

Blimey Fluffy that is impressive. Everyone seems to say get a hinged one but all my nearby stores offer unhinged I am going to brace myself and hit the shops later today.

I use the halogen every day too, main oven just for baking and large items like yesterday’s roast lamb

Londongirl888 · 22/04/2019 12:02

Thanks Costa I had no idea they were so popular.

We use ours so much that we have a new one still in the box, ready to replace the current one, should it break down Smile

bananasandwicheseveryday · 22/04/2019 23:30

@Londongirl888 the one I linked to arrives with an impressive number of accessories, including a replacement bulb. I believe it is one of very few, possibly the only one, that has a replaceable bulb. Prior to this model, we found the bulbs tended to outlast the guarantee by a few weeks and once they 'went', we had to replace the entire machine. Now, we just fit the new bulb and we're in business again.

Thanks Bananas yours sounds good got one from Argos yesterday that had the best feedback as getting it delivered was a bit restrictive. As it's note been opened yet I will check delivery and maybe take the other one back. But am likely to need to use it before then.
